New Delhi, August 13: Producer-director Prakash Jha has moved the Supreme Court challenging the ban on the release of his film Aarakshan in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab and suspension of its exhibition in Andhra Pradesh

Though a mention was made before a Bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir for urgent hearing of the petition on Friday itself, the Registry, after the completion of formalities, has listed it for August 16.

Setback for ED as Hasan Ali walks out on bail

Mumbai,August 13 :THERE were big names involved.But the Enforcement Directorate ( ED) seems to have managed to dilute the Hasan Ali case, making him get away almost scot- free.

On Friday, the Pune stud farm owner was released on bail by the Bombay High Court against a surety of ` 5 lakh after it found no case of “ money laundering” against Ali.

The court lashed out at the ED for having failed to establish the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, on which the chargesheet stands.

North Indian students attacked at AMU Malappuram centre

Malappuram, August 13: In an incident that may shock the proponents of AMU regional centres, about a dozen North Indian students were brutally beaten up by local students at the Malappuram (Kerala) study centre of Aligarh Muslim University on Wednesday (10th August). As the attack was allegedly led by son of a Muslim League leader, neither AMU nor district authorities have taken any action in the case. Student bodies have condemned the incident and demanded swift action from the authorities of AMU.

Gujarat government denies police officer chargsheeted

Gandhinagar, August 12 : The Gujarat government said Friday that IPS officer Rahul Sharma has neither been suspended nor any chargesheet served on him as yet.

State government spokespersons Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas and Minister of State for Energy Saurabh Patel termed the news of chargesheet and suspension as “false and baseless propaganda”.

Earlier, media reports had stated that the state government was planning to serve a charge-sheet to the officer.

Hyderabad, August 12: The TDP has demanded an investigation into the properties of Congress MP Mr. Lagadapati Rajagopal also alongside the investigation into the properties of another MP and YSR Congress Chief Mr. YS Jaganmohan Reddy.

Talking to newsmen here on Friday, party leader Mr. Revanth Reddy has said that Mr. Rajagopal should himself write to the Prime Minister, requesting him to institute CBI enquiry. Pune firing continues to rock Maharashtra Assembly

Mumbai, August 12: The police firing on Pune farmers continued to rock the Maharashtra assembly for the fourth consecutive day as the opposition targeted the Congress-led government, saying its version was contradictory to what police had to say about the incident.

Teacher jailed over sex with 16-year-old student

Hobart, August 12: A 58-year-old Australian girls’ school teacher has been jailed for two years and 10 months for having sex with a 16-year-old student up to 30 times.

According to News.com.au, Nicolaas Ockert Bester, a former science teacher at St. Michael’s Collegiate School in Hobart, pleaded guilty in the Tasmanian Supreme Court to maintaining a sexual relationship with a person under the age of 17 and possessing child exploitation material.

He will be eligible for parole in December 2012.

Lucknow, August 12: “I do not wish to go back to my mother,” 12-year-old Akbar says, looking up with love at his foster father Aiku Lal who has brought him up like his own since he found him sobbing and abandoned in a park eight years ago. The boy’s mother is fighting a custody battle in the Supreme Court.

Wrong to say madrassas hub of terrorism: Author

New Delhi, August 12: It is wrong to say that madrassas teach students to hate other religions and are hubs of terrorism, says Arshad Alam, author of the book “Inside a Madrassa: knowledge, power and Islamic identity in India”.

“The data of terror activities and terrorists don’t support the hypothesis that madrassas make terrorists. Also the kind of technology that terrorists have access to, a madrassa student doesn’t have,” Alam said in a lecture in the capital Thursday.

Alam also teaches at the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies in the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI).

Gujarat government to chargesheet IPS officer Rahul Sharma who prevented riots

New Delhi, August 112: The Gujarat government has decided to chargesheet a state cadre IPS officer, Rahul Sharma, for passing on records of calls made during the 2002 riots in the state, to the Nanavati Commission, without any official clearance.

Sharma, incidentally, was the deputy superintendent of police of Bhavnagar during the post-Godhra riots, and had led from the front to prevent the town from being engulfed into the communal frenzy. His prompt action against the rioting elements is believed to have left Bhavnagar unscathed.

General strike as scheduled from Aug 17: Telangana JAC

Hyderabad, August 12: The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (JAC) Chairman Prof M Kodandaram today said the “Sarva Janula Samme” (general strike) would commence from August 17 as planned earlier.

Talking to mediapersons after a steering committee meeting of the JAC held at the Film Chambers office in Secunderabad here, he said the agitation would be organised in three stages as against two as decided earlier.

Saudi-backed forces attack Bahrainis

Bahrain, August 12: Saudi-backed forces have stepped up their attacks on anti-regime demonstrators that have once again taken to the streets of Bahrain, calling for the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime.

The rallies on Friday were held in the capital Manama and the town of Sitra, Press TV reported.

Reports also indicate that regime forces have responded by firing tear gas at protesters as well as by cutting off electricity in Sitra.

The protesters, however, have refused to give in until a new democratic government is formed.
