US citizen kidnapped in Pakistan: police

Islamabad, August 13: Unidentified men kidnapped a U.S. national from the Pakistani city of Lahore early Saturday morning, police and neighbors said.

Senior Superintendent Police Investigation, Abdul Razaq Cheema, said a group of nearly 10 persons forcibly took the U.S. national from his residence at the Model Town area of the city.

Local media identified the missing American as Justin Warner, 63,who had been living in the area for four or five years. Police said he had been providing consultancy.

3 life terms for Naseer, 2 for Shafaz

Kochi, August 13: The Ernakulam NIA court awarded life imprisonment on Friday to Lashkar-e-Taiba member Thadiyantavide Naseer, prime accused in the Kozhikode twin blasts case, and Shafaz, his accomplice and the fourth accused.

Judge S. Vijayakumar gave three life terms to Naseer, chief conspirator, for offences under sections 18 and 16 (i) of Unlawful Activities Prevention (UAP) Act and section 4 (b) of Explosive Substances Act and under section 124 (A) (sedition) of IPC.

Telangana: A clause of Presidential Order repealed

Hyderabad, August 13: The Union Home Ministry on Friday repealed the Clause 14 (F) of 1975 Presidential Order, which had made Hyderabad a “free zone” for employment, a release from the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s office said here on Friday.

The clause had become highly contentious, and Telangana leaders long wanted it deleted.

Telangana leaders of ruling Congress, main opposition TDP, and other parties welcomed the repeal, as it would give more opportunities to youth from the region.

36 injured in road accident in China

Beijing, August 13: Thirty-six people were injured, five of them critically, after two vehicles collided on a highway in China’s east Zhejiang Province.

The accident happened yesterday when a bus rear-ended a semi-trailer truck on a section of the highway linking Zhejiang’s Longyou County and the city of Lishui, police said.

Woman commits suicide over husband’s discountenance

Hyderabad, August 13: A woman ended her life, disheartened over her husband’s discountenance. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Jedimetla police station. 19 year old Jyoti hanged herself to death at her parent’s house. According to police Rakesh, resident of Subhashnagar had left his wife Jyoti at her parent’s residence 4 months ago. She was pregnant at that time she delivered a baby boy few days ago. However Rakesh didn’t come to see his son even after being insisted. Disheartened by his behaviour Jyothi hanged herself to death.

Sonia convalescing “very well”: Chidambaram

New Delhi, August 13: Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who underwent a surgery in a US hospital, is “convalescing very well”, Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday.

Responding to a question about the latest medical condition of the UPA Chairperson, the Home Minister said “we are not authorized to speak on her health condition. The party spokesperson has been putting out the updates on her health condition.”

He, however, added “she is convalescing very well from what I have come to know from the last report.”

New York, August 13: Extending support to activist Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement, members of the ‘India Against Corruption’ organisation demonstrated outside the UN building here saying the Indian government’s Lokpal Bill draft is a “joke” and protects the corrupt.

About 30-40 India Against Corruption (IAC) volunteers, including women and children, shouted slogans and tore copies of the government’s draft of the Lokpal bill, as they sought to draw attention of the international community to Hazare’s fight against corruption.

Team Anna, govt headed for another showdown

New Delhi, August 13: The government and Team Anna appeared headed for another round of battle on the Lokpal Bill issue. After allowing the civil society group led by Anna Hazare to hold fast at the Jai Prakash Narayan Park in central Delhi, the Delhi Police are reported to have told the activists that they can protest at the site only for three days.

The Gandhian activist and his supporters, on the other hand, want to sit on fast against the government’s Lokpal Bill for at least 30 days.

Man missing from RGI airport

Hyderabad, August 13 (Siasat News): In a bizarre incident a passenger from RGI airport went missing.

According to the details, 25-year-old Anil Kumar, native of Gulbarga, had traveled to Muscat for working there as a driver two years back.

However, he became mentally imbalanced in a few days and was sent back to India on August 7. On the contrary, his brother kept on waiting for his brother’s arrival and went back home disappointedly as Anil did not turn up though he had arrived to India.

Islamabad, August 13: Women wearing burqa ”need to be searched without exception”, said a leading Pakistani daily after a woman suicide bomber blew herself up in Peshawar city. 

An editorial in the Daily Times said: “The ‘piety’ of terrorism’s holy warriors has shown its true colours – the sanctity of the holy month of Ramzan seems irrelevant to them as evidenced by the latest attacks….”
