Washington, August 30: US President Barack Obama today underlined the need to boost economic growth so that more jobs are created, as he nominated a Princeton University economist as his top adviser.
“Our great ongoing challenge as a nation remains how to get this economy growing faster,” Obama said at the White House as he nominated Alan B Krueger as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), which is a three-member body to advise the president on economic matters.

“I want to have a big Eid party this time because I want to read namaaz with my kids this time. We will call few friends. I’ve never celebrated Eid in a big way, but this time I feel like celebrating it.

Gauhati,August 30 : A woman hacked her husband to death and drank his blood before setting the body on fire after an argument during lunch at their Guwahati home this afternoon.
Though it is unclear what triggered the row, it enraged 37-year-old Minoti Rabha enough for her to attack her husband, Dev Charan Bongjong, 40, with a machete.
Bongjong, an employee of Army Base Hospital at Basistha, suffered multiple cuts and died on the spot.

Gandhinagar/New Delhi, August 29:The Gujarat High Court Monday took the CBI to task for shoddy investigation and acquitted all the 12 accused in the murder of former minister and BJP leader Haren Pandya.
It, however, upheld the other charges of criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder in another case that had been clubbed with Pandya’s.
Acquitting the accused of the murder charge, a division bench of Justices D.H. Waghela and J.C. Upadhyaya Monday took the CBI apart for a “botched and blinkered” investigation that left a lot to be desired.
New Delhi, August 29: Congress MP Praveen Singh Aron Monday said the situation arising out of Anna Hazare’s fast for a strong Lokpal bill had not been handled well by the party in the absence of party chief Sonia Gandhi.
“The persons responsible to decide matters could not see the widespread public support and socio-political aspects of Hazare’s movement,” he said in a letter to party general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Aron contended the issue was dealt with “inappropriately” and sought a “thorough inquiry” within the party to ascertain whether it was done deliberately or was a mistake.

Speaking on the occasion, Gowda said it was proposed to establish Karnataka State Sports Academy for Excellence. The Academy will help to train sports persons for 2016 Olympics.
Amritsar, August 29: Three people were arrested and 12 kg heroin, brought over from Pakistan, seized from their possession in this Sikh holy city, police said.
The heroin, police officials said, was worth millions of rupees in the international market.
According to Additional Inspector General of Police Kausthub Sharma, police stopped three people on the Kot Meet Singh road on the outskirts of Amritsar city, 250 km from Chandigarh, following a tip-off.
New Delhi, August 29: Reiterating his “commitment” to submit the recommendations on the Lokpal Bill before the winter session of parliament, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on law and justice, Monday said “it is not possible to fix a time limit for the job.”
“It is not possible to fix a time limit for the recommendations. Usually, such panels seek two to three extensions, which could mean a period of 9 to 12 months,” Singhvi said.
New Delhi, August 29: In a last-ditch attempt, General VK Singh has filed a statutory complaint with the Defence Minister seeking re-examination of its decision to reject his claim on the date of birth.
In a first for any Army chief, he filed the complaint with Defence Minister AK Antony under the Army Act on Friday asking him to take a decision on his date of birth purely on basis of merit and available evidence.
Gen Singh has been seeking change of date of birth in the Army records from May 10, 1950 to May 10, 1951 that will give an additional 10 months in office.
New Delhi, August 29: Congress on Monday refused to comment on appeals to Sonia Gandhi to save the lives of three convicts on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including that from DMK chief M Karunanidhi.
“Congress party has no view either way. We are certainly not commenting. It is a constitutional, legal and administrative process,” party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters in reply to a volley of questions on the issue.
When pointed out that even DMK which is part of the UPA has made the demand, Singhvi said, “DMK is not Congress”.
New Delhi, August 29: Dismissing suggestions that Rahul Gandhi’s idea of giving constitutional status to Lokpal Bill was a delaying tactic by the Congress, the ruling party made it clear that it was for the collective wisdom of the Standing Committee and Parliament to accept the proposal.
“Party supports Rahul Gandhi’s idea. Incorporating it in the bill will not take much time nor involve any technicalities,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters here.

Jaipur, August 29: Ugly scenes were witnessed in Rajasthan Assembly on Monday when an opposition BJP MLA flung a sandal towards Congress members and a ruling party lawmaker retaliated by brandishing his shoe following a heated exchange between two legislators.
Bhawani Singh Rajawat, MLA from Ladpura constituency in Kota district, was suspended from the House for one year for hurling the footwear. The sandal, however, did not hit anyone.
The incident occcured when Congress MLA Raghu Sharma interrupted BJP MLA Pramila Kundara while she was speaking in the house during the zero hour.
