Police rescues kidnapped woman

New Delhi, July 24: The Delhi Police Sunday rescued a woman within a few hours of her abduction.

A 24-year-old woman, identified as Mamta Sharma, was forcibly driven away in a car by a group of five men late Saturday near Ghitorni Metro station, a police officer said.

Sharma’s friend, who was accompanying her, immediately alerted the police and gave the registration number of the vehicle, he said.

Two of the accused, identified as Pramod Kumar and Kartar Singh, were nabbed after Sharma was found in Faridabad.

13/7, scribe’s murder set to rock Maharashtra assembly

Mumbai, July 24: The July 13 bombings and investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey’s murder here are expected to rock the Maharashtra assembly’s monsoon session starting Monday.

Also set to be raised in the assembly is an underworld attack in which businessman Iqbal Kaskar, brother of India’s most wanted don Dawood Ibrahim, survived but his aide was killed.

The ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-led Democratic Front (144 members) enjoys a majority in the house.

Iranian Foreign Minister to visit India

Tehran, July 24: The Iran’s Foreign Minister will visit India in the coming weeks, news agency ISNA quoted an official on Saturday as saying, as the two countries seek a way of ending a standoff over unmet payments for oil exports.

Ali Akbar Salehi will hold talks with his Indian counterpart on bilateral and international issues, Mehdi Nabizadeh, Iran’s ambassador to India, told.

“(Salehi) will travel to India within the next two months and we hope by that time the problem is resolved for good,” he said.

Vastanvi to go as Darul Uloom’s VC

Deoband, July 24: Controversial Vice Chancellor of Darul Uloom Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, who had raised the hackles of conservatives by praising Narendra Modi, was today removed from his post by a powerful body of the institution.

Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, who was appointed acting vice chancellor after the controversy broke out in January this year, will be the new head of the institution.

“The Vice-Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband (Vastanvi) has been removed from his post,” Nomani, who is in his 60s, said after a meeting of the powerful Majlis-e-Shura here.

Fresh clashes at Egypt protests

Cairo, July 24: Demonstrators were marching to Cairo’s defence ministry on Saturday when, witnesses say, they were pelted with rocks, stones and bottles by loyalists.

It was the second time in two days that crowds had attempted to march on the headquarters of the military council.

The protests came despite a pledge by the council’s chief to build democracy.

In a rare public address, Egypt’s military leader Field Marshall Tantawi had tried to defuse the situation.

He was “assassinated by terrorists” in the eastern part of the capital, it said quoting the state-run IRNA news agency. Other details were not immediately available.

35 killed in China train crash

Beijing, July 24: At least 35 people, including two foreigners, were killed and 210 injured in a high-speed train crash that occurred Saturday in China’s Zhejiang province, authorities said Sunday.

Thirtyfive people have been confirmed dead, including two foreigners, the emergency office said in a statementmedia reported.

A probe found that the accident occurred at 8.27 p.m. Saturday at Shuangyu town in Zhejiang’s Wenzhou city, when a high-speed train D301 crashed into another bullet train D3115.

Four Hyderabadi eateries closed

Hyderabad, July 24: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation sealed four eating establishments and prosecuted another three eating establishments on Saturday in Kukatpally, Housing Board and Bhagyanagar Colony, for posing danger to public health and doing business without valid trade licences.

Special teams consisting of assistant medical officers of health, food inspectors and other staff inspected about 24 eating establishments and found many functioning with unhygienic premises.

Man kills wife with acid

Bangalore, July 24: A 27-year-old homemaker, Vanajakshi of Gottigere on Bannerghatta Road, died after her husband, Vinay Kumar, allegedly threw acid on her. He buried her body about 100 km away.

On Friday, Vinay and Vanajakshi had an argument when she asked him to buy gold jewellery. In a fit of anger, Vinay threw acid on her.

21 women Metro pickpockets nabbed

New Delhi, July 24: A total of 21 women pickpockets, operating on the Delhi Metro network, were arrested from four Metro stations in the capital Saturday, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official said.

“While five women were arrested at the Barakhamba station, four were held at Central Secretariat station, seven were picked up from Rajiv Chowk station and five were held from Ramakrishna Paramahamsa station,” said Rohit Katiyar, spokesperson for the CISF which is responsible for Metro security.
