Girls outperform boys in SSC advanced supplementary exams

Hyderabad, July 25: Girls outperformed boys in the SSC Advanced Supplementary Examinations held in June 2011, the results of which were declared on Sunday.

The girls registered a pass percentage of 45.31 and boys with 41.43 per cent, 3.88 per cent more than boys.

Mahabubnagar district topped with 66.47 per cent students clearing the Supplementary Examinations followed by Chittoor with 61.53 per cent, Nalgonda 58.08 per cent, Warangal 57.13 per cent and Nellore 56.34 per cent. Srikakulam district occupied last slot with 24.99 per cent.

Would approach HC if resignations rejected second time: KTR

Hyderabad, July 25: Stating that Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLAs would submit their resignations from their elected posts once again on Monday to Deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka or Assembly Secretary Raja Sadaram, TRS MLA K Taraka Rama Rao on Sunday said that the Telangana leaders would seek legal opinion and possibly approach the High Court if their resignations are rejected a second time.

He also accused Speaker Nadendla Manohar of acting in favour of Seemandhra leaders by rejecting the resignations submitted on July 4 and 5.

Why were resignations rejected without discussion, ask Harish Rao

Hyderabad, July 25: Perhaps forgetting that the Speaker has discretionary powers, Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA T Harish Rao on Sunday found fault with Mr Nadendla Manohar for rejecting the resignations of elected representatives from Telangana without taking up any discussion in the House, to ‘weaken the separate Telangana agitation’.

Talking to media persons at Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s residence, Harish Rao said that the Speaker has to consult the respective members and take up a discussion in the House.

UAE’s Noor Islamic Bank posts $23 mn profit

Dubai, July 25: Dubai-based Noor Islamic Bank has posted a net profit of 85 million dirhams (about $23 million) in the first half of this year.

In the same period, the net operating profit was 207 million dirhams. The bank remains adequately capitalized with a capital adequacy ratio of 18.36 percent, it said Sunday.

PCO owner held for possessing over 80,000 SIM cards

Thane, July 24:A PCO owner has been arrested on charges of possessing over 80,000 mobile SIM cards in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi here, police said today.

Police also believe that the accused Anwar Sadab Ahmad Ansari alias Bablu, 33, was part of a gang that offered overseas calls at cheaper rates using illegal lines.

The incident came to light when acting on a tip-off, police raided Ansari’s shop on Thursday night and found nine gunny bags full of SIM cards of different service providers.

Jagan case: CBI likely to submit report before HC on July 26

Hyderabad, July 24:The CBI, probing into alleged disproportionate assets of YSR Congress chief and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, is likely to submit its preliminary probe report to Andhra Pradesh High Court on July 26, a senior official said today.

The high court on July 12 directed the central agency to submit within two weeks a preliminary report into the allegations that Jagan misused the office of his father, late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, to get investments for his business empire from various beneficiary companies.

43 killed in China train accident, 3 top rail officials sacked

Beijing, July 24:The death toll in China’s first bullet train crash has risen to 43 as the shocked government today sacked three top rail officials holding them responsible for the accident that also left 211 passengers injured.

The accident took place last night when a train that lost power after being struck by lightning was hit by another train, sending four compartments plunging from a viaduct and derailing another two, officials said as rescuers today recovered eight more bodies from the wreckage.

9-km long tunnel to be constructed on Jammu-Srinagar highway

Jammu/Gurez,July 24:The Centre will construct a 9 km-long tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to improve the connectivity of several villages with the only road-link to Kashmir Valley.

The construction of Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, longest in the route, in Udhampur district is expected to cost around Rs 2,519 crore and will be completed in five years.

The foundation stone of the 2-lane tunnel will be laid tomorrow by the Union Road and Transport Minister C P Joshi. The work on the four laning of the national highway will also begin tomorrow, officials said in Jammu.

Woman dies after jumping in front of train

Firozabad (UP), July 24:A woman was today killed and her daughter seriously injured after they jumped in front of a moving train in Rasoolpur area, police said.

Sundri Devi (45) took the desperate step allegedly over a family dispute, they said, adding that the victim’s 18-year-old daughter Puja lost her legs in the incident.

Puja has been to a hospital in Agra, they said.

Tripoli bombed, Gaddafi lashes ‘colonial plot’

Tripoli, July 24:NATO warplanes blitzed a string of military targets in Tripoli today, an official said, as embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi blamed a “colonial plot” for the conflict engulfing his country.

“In Tripoli there were two command and control nodes, two surface-to-air missile launchers and one anti-aircraft gun (hit),” a NATO official said from the mission’s headquarters in Naples, Italy.

New Delhi, July 24:Describing the sacking of Darul Uloom Vice Chancellor Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi as a disappointment for all “secular forces”, the BJP today said he has been “tormented and victimised” for speaking the “truth” about Gujarat’s growth under Narendra Modi.

Deoband, July 24: Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi was on Sunday removed from the coveted position of vice chancellor of the Darul Uloom Deoband, widely recognized as India’s leading Islamic seminary, for praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s developmental policies.

A decision to terminate his services was taken by the Majjis-e-Shoora, the Governing Council of Darul Uloom, at a meeting that concluded at Deoband Sunday noon.

Saudi aircraft takes off just before landing

Riyadh, July 24: A Saudi passenger aircraft took off again just seconds before touching the runway and hovered over the airport for nearly 30 minutes before landing, a newspaper in the Gulf Kingdom reported on Sunday.

The pilot of the Saudi Arabian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa gave no explanation to the panicking passengers as to why he had to abort landing at the airport in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah, Sabq said.“The passengers said they had kept their hands on their heart for half an hour after the plane took off suddenly just seconds before landing,” it said.

Freed Saudi woman driver vows to continue campaign

Riyadh, July 24: A Saudi woman whose imprisonment for driving drew global attention to the issue says she is more determined than ever to continue her campaign.

Manal al-Sharif, 32, was held for nine days in May after driving in the eastern city of Khobar.

“We won’t stop until the first Saudi license is issued to a woman,” she told the BBC in her first interview since.

Earlier this week, prosecutors in the city of Jeddah announced they were going to prosecute a woman for driving.

The campaign to allow women to drive in Saudi Arabia has gained momentum in recent weeks.
