Vigilance raids residence of Karunanidhi loyalist

Chennai, July 26: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption officials Tuesday conducted raids on the premises of former Intelligence chief MS Jaffer Sait and other officials in connection with the Tamil Nadu Housing Board land allotment case.

The residences of Sait, who headed the state intelligence wing in the previous DMK regime, DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s Personal security officers (PSO) P Pandian, C Ganesan, C Vinothan and IAS officer K Rajamanickam, one of the secretaries to Karunanidhi when he was Chief Minister, were raided, department sources said.

ULFA leader Paresh Baruah’s close aide held

Tezpur, July 26: In a blow to the anti-talk ULFA faction led by Paresh Baruah, security forces Tuesday captured his right hand man and publicity secretary Arun Udoy Dehotia in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

On a tip off, a joint team of men from the 44 Assam Rifles unit and police men raided village Jinjia under Biswanath subdivision and apprehended hardcore Ritik Hazarika alias ‘Lieutenant’ Arun Udoy Dehotia, police sources said.

A 9-mm pistol with two magazines were recovered from him, the sources said, adding Dehotia was being interrogated at the Assam Rifles Lokra camp here.

‘Rana was unaware of Headley’s terror activities’

Chicago, July 26: Mumbai attack accused David Headley had repeatedly told his FBI interrogators that his friend and co-accused Tahawwur Rana was unaware of his terror activities and had not provided any support to him knowingly, details that were omitted from an affidavit filed before a court, recently unsealed documents reveal.

According to the documents, FBI had presented a number of evidences in support of its applications to search properties of Rana but there was discrepancy in the evidence presented and in Headley’s testimony.

CBI report on Jagan Reddy’s assets likely today

Hyderabad, July 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the alleged disproportionate assets of YSR Congress chief and Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, is likely to submit its preliminary probe report to Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday.

The court on July 12 directed the central agency to submit within two weeks a preliminary report into allegations that Jagan misused the office of his father, late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, to get investments for his business empire from various beneficiary companies.

‘Mela’ is circus, not party: Aiyar

New Delhi, July 26: Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar Tuesday said it was not the party but the “mela” at its headquarters that he had described as a “circus” and hoped that it has not lost its capacity to laugh at itself.

“It was not the party but the mela at 24, Akbar Road (Congress headquarters) that I had described as a circus,” he said referring to reports in this regard on a speech he made at a book release function.

As for party leader Satyvrat Chaturvedi’s “pertinent question”, he said, “I am neither the joker or the trapeze artiste at the circus but the caged lion.”

Mumbai blasts suspect arrested from Nepal?

Kathmandu, July 26: A Nepali man, believed to be in his early 40s, has been arrested from capital city Kathmandu on the suspicion that he had links to this month’s serial blasts in India’s business capital Mumbai which killed 24 people and injured nearly 150, Nepal’s official media said.

Mohammad Zahir, a resident of Sarlahi district in Nepal’s Terai plains near the Indian border, was arrested by Nepal Police’s anti-terrorism cell on the basis of intelligence reports, the state-run Gorkhapatra daily reported Tuesday.

Mumbai, July 26: There were chaotic scenes in the Maharashtra assembly Tuesday as the opposition united to demand the implementation of the death sentence to Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist captured after the 26/11 terror attack.

Soon after the monsoon session of the state legislature convened, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and others started shouting slogans like “Hang Kasab, or quit office” as the speaker appealed for peace.

Vajpayee also indicted in 2G scam

New Delhi, July 26: A day after the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targetted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then finance minister P. Chidambaram over A. Raja’s statement on the 2G scam, the Congress Tuesday hit back saying that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also indicted by the former telecommunications minister.

“If the BJP decides to make a song and dance about one part of Raja’s statement, then the other part of his statement squarely indicts Atal Bihari Vajpayee also,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

Zardari’s son Bilawal to contest next Pak election

Karachi, July 26: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has announced that his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman, will contest the upcoming general elections from the party’s stronghold of Lyari in Sindh province.

Zardari made the announcement at a high-level meeting in Karachi.

According to the Nation, Zardari also informed the meeting that Bilawal would come to Pakistan in September.

Bilawal is expected to hold regular meetings to remain in contact with the people and elected representatives of Lyari.

Indebted couple’s bid to sell their kidneys

Kurnool, July 26: Three debt-ridden persons, including a married couple, made a desperate bid to sell their kidneys at Kurnool government hospital on Monday.
The trio reached the hospital and began searching for buyers since morning.
However, after sometime, mediapersons, who spotted them, counselled them that selling organs was a crime.
Knowing that none would come forward to strike a deal in public, the trio returned home disappointed.

Anil Reddy’s second postmortem deferred

Hyderabad, July 26: The scheduled second postmortem on the body of late Anil Reddy (35), a budding Tollywood music director who died under suspicious circumstances three months ago, was deferred indefinitely by the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) doctors after objections were raised by the victim’s friends on Monday.
A few days ago, Cyberabad police decided to conduct a second postmortem on the body of Anil after police found a discrepancy in cause of death in the post mortem reports submitted by doctors of the Gandhi hospital and Apollo hospital.

‘Pakistan was in the dark on Osama raid’

Islamabad, July 26: Pakistan was not told about the US raid that led to the killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, a senior army officer has said.

The Director General of Military Operations, Maj. Gen. Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad, has told a commission probing the May 2 gunning down of Osama bin Laden by US commandoes who stormed his residence in Abbottabad city that that Pakistani security organisations were not intimated about the operation.

A commission member told Dawn that Ahmad said the strategic sites in the country were well protected.

As per the details, the wine shop was kept opened even when it was the time for the closure of the shop. The constable Mallesh reached the shop and asked the owner to give explanation for keeping the shop opened late in the night.

Hyderabad, July 26: Bonal procession passed of peacefully yesterday night. Elaborate police arrangements had been made in old city. Mosques, dargas and chillas were wrapped with sheets on the routes of procession. Police were seen patrolling in the sensitive areas. “By concealing their status, the unrecognised, illegal schools first enrol students. As the illegal schools are aware that their students will not be allowed to register for board examinations, they later transfer their students to authorised schools as part of a deal,” R.P. Mishra, state president of the Madhayamik Shikshak Sangh (MSS), told IANS.

3 awarded life sentence in minor girl rape case

Bangalore, July 26: Three accused of a rape and murder case of a minor girl were convicted to life imprisonment by Sessions Court here.

Police said convicted Kaushik Devanath, Sushanth and Narasimha Sapu had dragged a 13-year-old girl, when she was attending natures call on June 19, 2008. After committing the crime, the convicted had strangulated the girl to death.

The Judge, who pronounced his verdict on July 23, also awarded an additional seven year imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine on each of them failing which to go one year simple imprisonment for charges of rape.
