South Sudan to become world’s newest nation July 9

United Nations, July 02: South Sudan will officially celebrate the founding of the nation July 9, Xinhua reported.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend the celebration in Juba, which will be the capital of the new country.

He will meet with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the staff of the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) after he arrives in Juba July 7, his spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

The independence celebration is being organised, six months after South Sudan’s residents voted in a UN-backed referendum to secede from the rest of Sudan.

White Collar, cyber crimes top new DGP’s agenda

Hyderabad, July 02: The increase in White Collar and cyber crime rate may come under check if new Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy’s assurance on the issue is anything to go by.

Mr Dinesh Reddy, who took charge as the new DGP met Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the Secretariat on Friday and asserted that checking crime tops his agenda.

Hyderabad, July 02: Markets at Sultan Bazaar, Koti, Putli Bowli and Badi Chowdi kept their shutters down for the day on Friday, with the Sultan Bazaar Parirakshana Samithi calling for a bandh. The bandh was declared to protest against the recent remarks made by the chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in connection with opposition to the metro rail project. Leaders from various opposition parties attended the public meeting held at Sultan Bazaar, extending their support to the traders.

Five killed as train hits auto at crossing

Hyderabad, July 02: Five persons, including three women, were killed when their auto was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing in Narketpally mandal of Nalgonda district on Friday evening. Among the victims were four farm workers and the auto driver. Five others were severely injured.

Chiru has to wait for ministry: Ghulam Nabi Azad

Hyderabad, July 02: The AICC general secretary, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, on Friday categorically announced that Mr K. Chiranjeevi will have to wait for some more time to get a berth in the Union Cabinet. Talking to newsmen after attending a “high tea” arranged by Mr Chiranjeevi at his residence, Mr Azad said, “We want him to be a minister in the Union Cabinet. For that he needs to be elected as an MP. At present there are no vacancies in the Rajya Sabha also. So he will have to wait at least for a year.”

Don’t act in haste, Azad tells Telangana leaders

Hyderabad, July 02: The central leadership of the Congress has advised its MPs and state legislators from the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh not to act in haste over the issue of a separate state, saying no problem can be solved through resignations.

Reacting to the decision of Congress MPs, ministers and legislators from Telangana to resign on Monday to protest the delay in carving out a separate Telangana state, Congress general secretary Gulam Nabi Azad said it is not a small issue which can be solved in two or four days.

No crisis in Andhra

New Delhi, July 02: The Congress Friday denied it was facing a crisis in Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the decision of its MPs and legislators from Telangana to resign in support of their demand for a separate state, saying the party had internal mechanisms to take care of such situations.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said Telangana was an emotive issue for Congress leaders from the region and “the party understands it”.

“No crisis… There are internal mechanisms in place to take into account of these sentiments,” Singhvi said, answering queries on the issue.

Guard murdered for not opening gate promptly

Mohali, July 02: A security guard, who failed to immediately open the entrance gate of a residential area here, was brutally murdered by an local resident and his friend early Friday, police said. Both have arrested.

The guard, Chotte Lal was posted at the entrance gate of an area in phase 3B2 when the incident happened.

The arrested accused were identified as Amardeep Singh Virk, who lived in the colony, and his friend Taranvir Singh Sahota, resident of neighbouring Kharar town.

Tragic end to Hyderabad love story

Hyderabad, July 01: A young couple’s love story had a tragic ending when they were hit by a speeding truck while fleeing police in Shamirpet. While the 24-year-old youth died, his 15-year-old lover sustained severe injuries in the accident.

Naresh, 24, a graduate from Harijanbasti of Shivrampally, fell in love with a class IX student, Anita Jyoti of the same locality. On Sunday afternoon, the couple eloped and went to Naresh aunt’s house in Pragnapur of Medak district.

Team Anna to meet Sonia Gandhi July 2

New Delhi, July 01: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will Saturday meet Gandhian Anna Hazare and other representatives of civil society to discuss the Lokpal bill.

‘The meeting between team Anna and Sonia Gandhi is confirmed for tomorrow (July 2),’ Aswathi Muralidharan, a member of the NGO Parivartan which is canvassing support for the Lokpal bill, told IANS.

The meeting is scheduled for 4.30 p.m. It was earlier scheduled for June 30, but was cancelled.

Tapal seeks action against top cops

Bellary, July 1: Tapal Ganesh of TNR Mines took exception to the police department’s move to suspend three police officials for failing to serve court summons to Minister G Janardhan Reddy.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said that when even officials of the cadre of SP and DySP need to take appointment to see Reddy at his residence or home office, how can any head constable or others just above that cadre reach and serve court summons to the ‘powerful’ minister.

Petition against Harsha Gupta dismissed

Bangalore, July 1: The High Court on Thursday dismissed the writ petition seeking Rs 2.5 crore as compensation from former Mysore DC Harsha Gupta for demolishing a portion of Planet X amusement park and advised the petitioner to approach the civil court. Justice Shylendra Kumar observed that the order passed by the DC is not a non-speaking order and there are two reports stating that the petitioner had encroached the land.
The action of the DC in hastily demolishing the portions of the resort is bad in law.

MCI okays 700 additional seats

Bangalore, July 1: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted permission for 700 additional medical seats in Karnataka with colleges at at Hassan, Mandya, Raichur, Shimoga and Bidar being granted 100 additional seats each.
The increase in intake proposed for the government colleges in Bidar and Belgaum have also been cleared.
The 700 seats will be offered to students during the second round of CET counselling.
A special round of counselling is likely.

Jumbos on the rampage attack man

Mysore, July 1: A herd of four elephants created panic in Heggadeva Kote taluk villages. The herd destroyed standing crops and attacked Chandre Gowda (45), working in the fields.
He has been shifted to hospital in Mysore. The villagers first sighted the jumbos in the sugarcane fields in Naganahalli on Wednesday night.
For three hours the jumbos ran helter-skelter. As the field was fenced, they had to beat drums, and even burst crackers till noon.

Undertrial found dead

Bangalore, July 1: An undertrial prisoner at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the jail premises on Thursday morning. The deceased has been identified as Shashidhar, a resident of Kattigenahalli.
According to police, Shashidhar was arrested on charges of dowry harassment after his wife and child committed suicide about six months ago. The reason for his death is yet to be ascertained, police said.
However, the jail authorities maintained that Shashidhar was suffering from asthma and he was taken to the hospital in jail premises today.
