GHMC seizes 200 tons of plastic bags

Hyderabad, June 03: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Saturday seized 200 tons of plastic carry bags of 20 microns thickness, costing about Rs 80 to 90 lakh from manufacturing units at the Katedan Industrial Area.

This was revealed by GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu while interacting with media persons at the GHMC head office after the Corporation’s Face-to-Face programme.

HMWSSB demolishes encroachments on Gandipet

Hyderabad, July 03: A Vigilance team of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board on Saturday demolished encroachments along the Osman Sagar (Gandipet) raw water conduit following a raid.

The Vigilance team also seized 33 motor pump sets in two sections.

Giving details, the HMWSSB said that the Vigilance team, led by Circle Inspector B Srihari, along with staff, conducted raids on the encroachments and illegal occupation along the Osmansagar raw water conduit from Shaikpet to Puppelguda and removed them.

Mayor to fly economy class for Asia Pacific summit

Hyderabad July 03: Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy, Deputy Mayor Jaffer Hussain, accompanied by GHMC secretary and 10 members of the FAPCCI will travel ‘economy class’ when they fly to Australia to take part in the Asia-Pacific Cities Summit to be held in Brisbane from July 6 to July 8.

The reason behind the Mayor and her fellow-travelers opting to fly economy class is said to be that the government has sanctioned a ‘paltry’ Rs 4 lakh for their trip.

While in Australia the Mayor is expected to sign a ‘sister-cities’ agreement with her Brisbane counterpart.

Section 144 imposed around vital institutions

Hyderabad, July 03: Anticipating disturbances and agitations, the police on Saturday banned all kinds of rallies and processions within a radius of two kilometres of the state Assembly, the state Secretariat, the Chief Minister’s Camp Office and the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy Collectorates, under Section 144.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner AK Khan said that the ban has been enforced after reliable information was brought to his notice that “certain groups are trying to create disturbances affecting public peace and order in the city.”

Ahmed Patel counsels patience to Telangana Cong leaders

New Delhi, July 03: The AICC president, Ms Sonia Gandhi’s political adviser, Mr Ahmed Patel, has called up Telangana Congress MLAs and counseled them patience.

Afghan district governor kidnapped

Asadabad, July 03: Suspected militants have kidnapped the governor of a volatile Afghan district near the border with Pakistan, a senior local official said on Saturday.

Musafir Khan Qayumzai, district governor of Ghazi Abad, was snatched Friday along with his son and two bodyguards, said Kunar provincial governor Sayed Fazlullah Waahedi.

“When he was en route to his office from home, he was taken out of his car by unidentified men and was taken away,” Waahedi said.

More women cops in Delhi police

New Delhi, July 02: Delhi would get 450 more women constables within two months, police chief B.K. Gupta said Saturday.

“Around 450 women police personnel will join the force in September. We will post them at visible spots of the city like Connaught Place,” Gupta told reporters at Delhi Police’s half-yearly press briefing here.

“Till now women were into desk jobs at police stations but now we are encouraging them to go out and manage traffic and patrol the city,” he added.

US wants India, Pakistan to keep up dialogue

Washington, July 2: Even as the US talks with Pakistan about its relationship with Islamabad since the US raid on Osama bin Laden’s hideout, the US considers it important that India and Pakistan continue their “constructive” dialogue.
“We said last week and continue to say that dialogue between India and Pakistan is a very constructive one,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters Friday when asked if the US was asking Pakistan to do more to counter terrorism as demanded by New Delhi.

China state fund eyes Facebook stake

Beijing, July 2: A state-owned fund in China is reportedly interested in buying a stake in social network Facebook, said a media report.
A source told US business magazine Business Insider that China’s sovereign wealth fund – the China Investment Corp – is hoping it could buy a stake in Facebook, large enough “to matter”, the Shanghai Daily reported.
Financial firm Citibank is reportedly trying to acquire as much as $1.2 billion worth of Facebook stock on behalf of two sovereign wealth funds – one from China and another from the Middle East, the daily said.

US drone-making company under terror threat

Los Angeles, July 2: Al Qaeda militants could target senior executives of a US company that builds unmanned surveillance aircraft, a media report said.
The terror group threatened to attack 11 senior staff at the AeroVironment Inc. (AV), based in Monrovia near Los Angeles, Xinhua reported quoting San Gabriel Valley Tribune Friday.
AV makes a variety of unmanned surveillance aircraft systems, including the Dragon Eye, Raven, Wasp and Puma AE, that are used by US forces in the war on terrorism.

Russia behind time on Indian frigates delivery

St, Petersburg, July 2: Russia is not going to meet the deadlines in the implementation of a contract on the delivery of missile frigates to the Indian Navy, the state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said.
Russia and India signed a $1.6 billion contract on construction of three modified Krivak III class (also known as Talwar class) guided missile frigates for India in 2006. The first frigate was scheduled for delivery in April 2011.

Show face to police, burqa-clad Australians told

Sydney, July 2: Women wearing the burqa or full-face veils will now be forced to show their faces when stopped by police, a senior official said.
Attorney-General Greg Smith said it was the duty of all citizens to identify themselves when asked by police and the law should reflect that, the Daily Telegraph reported.
He said he could understand the public outcry over situation like that of a Muslim woman who was jailed for knowingly making a false complaint about racism by police, but the sentence was overturned on appeal in the district court.

53 Indians released from Bangladeshi jail

Dhaka, July 2: At least 53 Indian nationals held on various charges, including smuggling and trespassing, have been released from a jail in Bangladesh, a media report said.
The jail in Satkhira district, on the border with India’s West Bengal state, released the prisoners Thursday, the Daily Star reported.
Jail superintendent Nurannabi Bhuiyan said the Indians were freed following a district court order after a case was filed recently challenging their detention.

New Delhi, July 02: An inquiry has been ordered by Tihar authorities on Saturday on the reports of special treatment being given to former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chief Suresh Kalmadi.

Jail superintendent S C Bharadwaj, in whose room Kalmadi was reportedly found having tea by inspecting trial court judge Brijesh Kumar Garg during a surprise visit to the jail on June 30, has also been transferred to Port Blair but the officials said it was not related to the alleged incident.

Police inspector molests minor in train

Puri, July 02: A police inspector was arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of a minor girl in a Puri-bound train today, railway police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours when Santosh Mallick, Inspector, CID-Special Branch in Cuttack, was travelling to Puri for Rathyatra duty in Jagannath Express, Railway DSP Pandab Mohanty said.

The nine-year-old girl travelling with her family from Kolkata was asleep when the accused, stated to be in an inebrieted state, allegedly outraged her modesty, he said quoting the FIR lodged by the girl’s mother.
