BNP calls for 48-hour countrywide strike

Dhaka, July 3: Bangladesh’s main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies Sunday called for a 48-hour countrywide strike from July 6, Xinhua reported.
The strike-call was given in protest against the government’s move to annul the non- party caretaker government system and recent share market scandal.
The BNP and its key allies, including Jamaat-e-Islami, separately announced the 48-hour stir will begin at 6 a.m. time July 6.

‘Chinese teachings give me inner strength’

Beijing, July 3: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says inner strength is more important than physical strength and he gets his strength by following the classical teachings of Chinese greats like Confucius.
“I’ve been living in Korea studying the Chinese classics – Kong Zi (Confucius), Lao Zi, Meng Zi (Mencius), and Sun Zi … All these classical wisdoms are very important to nourish your inner strength,” the 67-year-old Ban told Xinhua.

Visit UK and travel to Ireland without visa

London, July 03: Indians visiting Britain on tourist visas will now be able to visit neighbouring Ireland without a visa, under a visa waiver programme announced in Dublin.

The waiver programme will run from July 1 until October 2012, a period that includes the London 2012 Olympics, when a large number of Indian and other tourists are expected to visit Britain.

Currently, Indian citizens need a visa to enter Ireland.

Arrest warrant against Zia’s son

Dhaka, July 03: A Bangladeshi court on Sunday issued arrest warrants for the fugitive eldest son of former premier Khaleda Zia and 17 others over a 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally that killed 24 people and injured some 300 people, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Forty six year old Tarique Rahman, who is now in London on a government parole for treatment since 2008, has been indicted for abetting one of the worst political violence in the country in decades that led to severe injury to one of Hasina’s ears.

Sri Chaitanya students bag top Eamcet ranks

Hyderbad, July 3: Students of Sri Chaitanya secured many of the top 100 ranks in the Eamcet, the results of which were released on Friday.
N Pratyush got the first rank in engineering and M Himaja first rank in medical.
Seven out of the first 10 ranks in engineering – 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 – were bagged by Sri Chaitanya students.
In the medical stream, all top 10 ranks were bagged by Chaitanya students.
Sushmasri, academic director of Sri Chaitanya educational institutions congratulated the students for their performance.

Treat for silk-lovers in city

Hyderabad, June 3: National Silk Expo, on its maiden display in the city drew heavy crowds after it was formally inaugurated on Friday at Satya Sai Nigamagam, Srinagar Colony.
The expo will showcase 100 per cent silk products. The expo is organsied by the Gramin Hastkala Vikas Samiti (GHVS) which is a non-profit organisation and works in handlooms and handicraft products.
Silk-lovers thronged the stalls displaying silk varieties on sale at the exhibition were stamped with ‘Silk Mark’, implying 100 per cent pure silk.

Teacher thrashes student for petty fight

Hyderabad, July 3: A 15-year-old boy of an Arabic school on the outskirts of the city was beaten up by his teacher leading to severe injuries following a petty dispute between the students.
The boy suffered injuries on his hands, thighs and on the abdomen.
The incident took place in the Jamia Riyaz Arabic schools which teaches Quran to students.
The injured student, Riyazuddin, is studying fourth year Quran course in the residential school.

Tollywood producer confesses links with Suri

Hyderabad, July 3: It was a dispute over a piece of land in Madhapur that had brought producer Chillara Kalyan into contact with the slain faction leader Maddalacheruvu Suri. Kalyan was arrested a few days ago for allegedly cheating Shalimar Video Company in respect of the VCD and DVD rights of Telugu movies, Khaleja and Komaram Puli.
Though the first brush proved to be a bitter experience, Kalyan and Suri became close pals later on during the making of Ramgopal Verma’s Rakta Charitra-I.

City gearing up for Rath Yatra

Hyderabad, July 3: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is organising a five-hour long annual Rath Yatra on Sunday at from 12 noon onwards.
Symbolising the confluence of Indian culture, the 134th edition of Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra will be taken out from the Jagannath temple here, a temple trust official said.
“The Rath Yatra over the years has emerged as a symbol of communal harmony drawing participation from all sects and reflects the true Indian culture in spirit,” said H G Mahasringa Dasa, the chairman of the Temple Administrative board.

Water tankers divided into two categories

Hyderabad, July 3: To provide smooth water supply through water tankers and to meet maintenance costs, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to categorise the tankers under domestic and non-domestic use with immediate effect.
Water tanker for residential purposes will cost Rs 325 for 5,000 litres, which includes Rs 135 as Board cess plus Rs 190 for the tanker owner.

Attention diverters loot Rs 55 lakh from van

Hyderabad, July 3: An attention diversion gang snatched away Rs 55 lakh cash from a private security agency which deposits cash in ATMs on the busy Chikkadpally road on Friday afternoon.
Though an armed security guard was present guarding the vehicle, offenders laid a bait to the driver by throwing away Rs 10 notes and sped away with the loot.
The incident took place on Chikkadpally main road opposite the Chermas showroom.
The personnel of CMS Security Agency, which deposits money in ATMs of various banks had come to the State Bank of India ATM to deposit money around 2.15 p.m.

‘Bloodshed if Metro alignment not changed’

Hyderabad, July 3: There would be bloodshed if the state government fails to change the alignment of corridor-II passing through Sultan Bazar and Badichowdi, TRS leaders warned on Friday.
The traders of Sultan Bazar, Badi Chowdi, Putli Bowli and their adjoining areas under the banner of Traders Joint Action Committee downed their shutters and observed complete bandh on Friday demanding change in the alignment of the Metro Rail project.
They held rallies holding black flags and burnt ministers Mukesh Goud and Danam Nagender in effigies.

APPSC plans to do away with job interviews

Hyderabad, July 3: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) is likely to do away with interview system for recruitment into all government jobs except Group-I services.
A proposal to this effect is under consideration by the state government which is likely to take a decision shortly.
If approved, the new system will apply to all future recruitments to government jobs including Group-II services.
Over the past few years, the APPSC got entangled in various controversies over irregularities in recruitment of candidates in government jobs.

ATM robbery:Police teams sent to Pune, TN, Bidar

Hyderabad, July 3: Four teams of city police were sent to Pune, Tamil Nadu and Bidar on Saturday to hunt down those involved in stealing a bag containing Rs 55 lakh cash, through attention diversion, from the authorities of a security agency which was supposed to load the cash in the SBI ATM at Chikapally on Friday. The central zone police said it was a handiwork of inter-state gang which was specialised in stealing cash by diverting attention. It is also suspected that at least two persons were involved in executing the offence.

CM asks for nod to export surplus rice

Hyderabad, July 3: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has again urged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to permit export of 15 lakh metric tonnes of boiled rice and 10 lakh metric tonnes of non-basmati rice from the state to other countries through normal trade channels.
He wanted the Centre to take a decision immediately to ensure the rice held by millers is liquidated and thus enable them to purchase paddy paying the remunerative price of farmers.

Drugs: Pubs warned

Hyderabad, July 3: Police commissioner AK Khan on Saturday said surveillance was kept on persons coming from African continent as in most of the narcotic cases it was they who were found to be supplying banned drugs.
He was speaking at a seminar on ‘War on Drugs’ organised by Amritha Foundation. He said that authorities of hotels, pubs were warned of strict action if found facilitating supply of drugs.

Alert youngster captures train robbers on mobile

Hyderabad, July 3: On the night of June 7, when a group of 20 people attempted to commit robbery in the Mumbai-bound Udyan Express train, a youngster happened to be standing near the door of one of the coaches.
When the train suddenly came to a halt, he peeped outside only to see a man standing on the shoulders of another and trying to snatch the gold chain of a sleeping passenger through the window grills.
The quick-thinking youngster took out his mobile phone and snapped a few pictures of the two offenders.

Girls fare better in Inter supplementary exams

Hyderabad, July 3: Girls secured a pass percentage of 69 percent compared to 63 percent for boys in the Intermediate first year advanced supplementary examination, the results of which were announced on Saturday.
Minister for Secondary Education, K Parthasarathy said the total pass percentage was 65 percent in general and 43 percent in vocational courses. Of the 5.97 lakh students in general category, 3.91 lakh passed while 15,281 passed in vocational courses out of 35,217.

Iraqi girl underwent free heart surgery set to back home

Bengaluru, July 03: Five-year-old Iraqi girl Marwah Riyadh, who underwent free heart surgery at Narayana Hrudayalaya, is all set to return to her home country on Sunday.

Hailing from a poor family in the Babil region of Iraq, Marwah underwent surgery in the third week of June.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman of the Narayana Hrudayalaya, said Marwah was well on the way to a full recovery.
