AP on alert over Telangana bandh

Hyderabad, July 05: Security has been stepped up in Andhra Pradesh, specially at the Osmania University campus the nerve centre of separate statehood protests – and prohibitory orders placed in Hyderabad in view of the 48-hour bandh called by Telangana supporters on Tuesday.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the situation with some of his Cabinet colleagues and top police officials on Monday night.

Apex court order a slap on government’s face: BJP

Space transportation costs must be reduced: Kalam

Kolkata, July 05: Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday said it is essential for India to work together with other nations to bring down the cost of space transportation.

“India needs to work together with different nations to bring down the cost of space transportation. The country is working on reducing the cost of space transportation,” said Kalam while delivering the M.P. Birla Memorial Lecture here.

He was also conferred the M.P. Birla Golden Jubilee Award by M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research on the occasion.

Saudi-backed forces attack Bahrainis

Manama, July 05: Saudi-backed government forces have launched an attack on a village in northeastern Bahrain where the people had staged an anti-regime protest.

On Monday, the protesters, who had taken to the streets of Nuwaidrat, called for the implementation of reforms and demanded that Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa step down, a Media correspondent reported.

Bahrainis have been holding peaceful demonstrations across the Persian Gulf kingdom since mid-February, calling for an end to the absolute monarchy of the Al Khalifa family.

Rape suspect’s mother: My son is a scapegoat

Jeddah, July 05: Um Abdullah, the mother of a suspect recently arrested in Jeddah in connection with at least 13 kidnappings and brutal rape attacks on little girls, has claimed her son is a scapegoat for crimes he had not committed.

The suspect is a 42-year-old married Saudi schoolteacher with five children. His wife claimed last week that her husband was innocent.

He has since been charged with the attacks that took place since 2008 and is now in the custody of the Public Prosecution and Investigations Commission.

248 women raped in 1 night in Congo

Brazzaville, July 05: A total of 248 women have reported being raped by soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern Sud-Kivu province in one night, local medical sources say.

A doctor at Nakiele hospital said on Monday that 121 local women had been raped during the night of June 11-12 in the region the UN has called the world’s “rape capital,” AFP reported.

A nurse from Abala also said that 55 women reported that they were violated in the same night, while another health worker said that 72 women from the village of Kanguli said they were also raped the same night.

Train stopped over bad food

Mumbai, July 05: Passengers held up a Kerala-bound train for more than two hours at Panvel Railway Station on Monday, insisting the pantry staff be booked for serving them stale food. The fracas started as soon as Amritsar-Kochuveli Express pulled into the station around 12.30 pm, when many passengers stormed into the station master’s cabin.

The passengers complained that a few them started feeling uneasy, and many others developed symptoms of dysentery after eating breakfast. Also, the pantry staff said there wasn’t a log book on board to take down the complaints.

Hyderabad, July 5: Selling vegetables at Rythu bazaars is relatively an older concept while plan of mobile Rythu bazaars was enacted in 2002 but was abandoned after its failure. But now once again 14 mobile rythu bazars are given permission to sell vegetables at various colonies in the city.

PS Pradyumna, chief executive officer of rythu bazars told “We have given permission to mobile Rythu bazars (MRBs) to supply vegetables at colonies where rythu bazars are not available, at the same time farmers get the opportunity of self employment”.

Fox News’s hacked Twitter feed says Obama shot dead

Washington, July 05: Hackers took over a politics Twitter feed belonging to US broadcaster Fox News announcing that President Barack Obama had been shot dead on America’s national day.

The @foxnewspolitics feed stated: “@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead.”

Just an hour before the message, there was a post “Just regained full access to our Twitter and email. Happy 4th”. July 4 is America’s national day.

SC appoints SIT to probe black money

New Delhi, July 05: The Supreme Court on Monday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe black money stashed in foreign banks by Indian citizens. The committee will be headed by former apex court judge BP Jeevan Reddy.

An apex court bench of Justice B Sudershan Reddy and Justice SS Nijjar also directed the Central Government to disclose the names of people holding accounts in LGT bank in Liechtenstein – a principality in Europe bordering Switzerland and Austria – as disclosed to it by German authorities.

State Sales Tax unearths Rs 6,500-cr hawala scam

Mumbai, July 05: The State Sales Tax stumbled upon a Rs 6,500-crore hawala racket in Mumbai while investigating accounts of a firm in Girgaum. Because of the enormity of the scam, Income-Tax officials have joined the probe. Name of the company under the scanner is being withheld.

Sales Tax Commissioner Sanjay Bhatia said Naresh Shah, believed to be the kingpin of the racket, has been arrested. Another officer said, “We have been keeping a watch on this Girgaum-based firm for the past one month. Investigations revealed fake bills which were used top claim refund on VAT.”

DSK to sue French rape attempt accuser

London, July 05: Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn says he plans to sue a French woman who has filed an attempted rape complaint against him.

Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers said in a statement issued on Monday that he is compiling a libel complaint against the French journalist and writer Tristane Banon, AFP reported.

The statement came after Banon’s lawyer David Koubbi announced that she would lodge a complaint against Strauss-Kahn for attempted rape.

The former IMF managing director has denounced the accusation as imaginary, but Banon says the case is fully backed up.

Iran to launch national internet in August

Tehran, July 05: Iran is all set to launch the first phase of its national internet in August, a minister said.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Reza Taqipour said the pilot and first phases – titled phases “Zero and One” – would be completed and be operational by late August, Press TV reported.

Taqipour said the national internet will initially offer 8 Mb high-speed broadband for home users. The customers will have 20 Mb of bandwidth when the next phases of the internet network become operational.

Aussie soldier killed in S Afghanistan

Kabul, July 05: An Australian soldier has been killed in an exchange of fire with militants in southern Afghanistan, the chief of the Australian Defense Forces, General David Hurley, has announced.

The 35-year-old Sergeant Todd Langley was serving with a special operations task group at the time he was killed on Monday. A second soldier was wounded in the same incident and is reportedly in serious condition.

‘Iran enemies set to create insecurity’

Tehran, July 05: A senior Iranian commander says based on information obtained by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), enemies want to create insecurity in the country through terrorist attacks.

“We have obtained information and evidence about these recent moves,” Commander of the IRGC Brigadier General Mohammad-Ali Jafari said on Monday.

Jafari added that the disappointment of enemies in reaching their objectives results in their resorting to terrorist acts and creating insecurity.

Gaddafi threatens West with retaliation

Tripoli, July 05: The son of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi says Western powers attacking Libya have made themselves “legitimate targets” for retaliation.

“We have to fight for our country and you are going to be legitimate targets for us.” Saif al-Islam told the French TV channel TF1.

On Friday, Gaddafi threatened to attack Europe if NATO refused to stop airstrikes on the country.

Seif al-Islam said Libyan authorities are prepared to make concessions to end the conflict there but will fight on for their homeland.

“We will never surrender. We will fight. It’s our country.”
