‘Iran enemies set to create insecurity’

Tehran, July 05: A senior Iranian commander says based on information obtained by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), enemies want to create insecurity in the country through terrorist attacks.

“We have obtained information and evidence about these recent moves,” Commander of the IRGC Brigadier General Mohammad-Ali Jafari said on Monday.

Jafari added that the disappointment of enemies in reaching their objectives results in their resorting to terrorist acts and creating insecurity.

The Iranian commander said these measures include resorting to war or destabilizing measures which are carried out by armed groups established in the countries neighboring Iran in the southeast or northwest.

Referring to Iran’s recent military drill dubbed the Great Prophet 6, Jafari said the IRGC only revealed a part of its missile capabilities in the maneuvers.

IRGC started the 10-day Great Prophet 6 drills last Monday.

“Firing missiles from underground silos, hiding the missiles from the enemy, scattering missile stocks and using the element of surprise [with regards to] the enemy… are issues that have been important for us and we have been working on them for several years… and a part of these capabilities were shown in the Great Prophet drill.”

Jafari said increasing the capabilities of the armed forces has strengthened Iran’s deterrence power because of which the enemy was not able to carry out its threats over the past 2-3 years.

The Iranian commander added that Iran would not confine itself to blocking the Strait of Hormuz if any act of aggression was committed against the country.

The Iranian commander said Iran is after plans to fully exploit its defensive potential in the high seas, explaining that “this means that if the enemy attempts to threaten Iran outside the Strait of Hormuz the country has the power to retaliate and this strategy is currently on our agenda.”

Commenting on the meddlesome remarks of former US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Jafari said, “Whenever they become disappointed or fail, they either resort to leveling political accusations or to assassinations.”

On June 30, which was his last day in office, Gates claimed that the Islamic Republic was likely to gain access to nuclear weapons in the next three years.
