Bandh likely to throw city out of gear

Hyderabad, July 05: The city is once again getting into a ‘bandh mode’ following a two-day bandh call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee.? For the next two days, the city is expected to come to a grinding halt and the state intelligence wing has already passed on inputs to the city police suggesting that the pro-Telangana agitators might create disturbance in some parts of the city.? All schools and colleges across the city would be closed fearing trouble from the agitators and some of the institutions have already made the announcement.

Rahul in Mayawati land again, visits Bhatta Parsaul

Greater Noida, July 05: Stepping up his campaign against the Uttar Pradesh government, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Tuesday visited the twin villages of Bhatta Parsaul, the epicentre of farmers’ protests in May over land acquisition, as part of his foot march across villages in the state.

Gandhi told farmers in the area, near the Indian capital, that “land acquisition is taking place from here to Agra” and he wanted to understand for himself what were the issues facing them.

Manch seeks clarification on specific documents reportedly destroyed in 2007

Ahmedabad, July 05: The Jan Sangharsh Manch, which represents the victims of the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat, has filed an application before the G.T. Nanavati-Akshay Mehta Judicial Inquiry Commission to direct the State government to clarify on the specific documents reportedly “destroyed” in 2007 as per the “standard procedure.”

The application was filed before the commission here on Monday on behalf of Manch convener Amrish Patel.

S’porean mum stuck in jungle for 40 days

Singapore, July 05: She once saw a man shot at point blank while in Africa’s Ivory Coast.

On another occasion, she wandered through a forest in Sulawesi, Indonesia, where human heads hung from the trees.

And she was bitten by a venomous snake while stranded deep in the jungles of Irian Jaya for 40 days.

She regained consciousness two days later after locals used herbs to treat her.

While her experiences on several forest expeditions may suggest that Dr Yasmeen Mohamed is a female version of Indiana Jones, her actual vocation is a lot more mundane.

She is a botanist.

Appropriate decision on Telangana at appropriate time: Congress

New Delhi, July 05: Evading a reply on the resignation by 35 Congress MLAS in Andhra Pradesh and 11 party MPs in protest against the delay in formation of Telangana, the Congress just said that an ‘appropriate decision on the issue would be taken at an appropriate time’.

Addressing reporters here yesterday, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, “It (Telangana) is a very sensitive and highly emotional issue. We are aware of the situation. We hope that an appropriate decision will be taken at an appropriate time.” Mr Ahmed, however, refused to elaborate any further.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was held at his 7, Race Course Road residence, government sources said.

Won’t chat with him anymore: Mumbai woman

New Delhi, July 05: A Mumbai-based woman who allegedly emotionally blackmailed her online chat partner – an MNC employee working in Gurgaon – after he refused to marry her, Monday appeared before the Delhi High Court and stated that she would not communicate with him any longer.

Following her commitment, the man withdrew his complaint against her.

The women only appeared before the court after it slammed her non-appearance on the previous hearing June 27, and issued a bailable warrant of Rs.10,000 to ensure her presence on the next date of hearing.

Malaysia is human trafficking hotspot – WikiLeaks

Manila, July 05: Thousands of women from Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, as well as China and India were trafficked to Malaysia for forced labor and prostitution, according to an unclassified 2006 cable from the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur released by WikiLeaks, the online whistle-blower.

In a memo to the US Department of State dated March 3, 2006, then US Ambassador to Malaysia Christopher LaFleur also reported that the Southeast Asian country was a “destination and-to a lesser extent-a transit country for men and women trafficked for forced labor.”

PCB clears Afridi to play in SLPL

Islamabad, July 05: Pakistan Cricket Board said on Monday that it had given clearance to former captain Shahid Afridi to take part in the inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League starting later this month.

A senior PCB official confirmed that they had given permission for the Sri Lankan authorities to sign on around 10 Pakistani players for the league and that list included Afridi.

London, July 05: Over half a million overweight children in Britain are at risk of being affected by liver disease, a government expert has warned.

According to Martin Lombard, national clinical director for liver at the Department of Health, a culture of overeating is putting the lives of over 500,000 young people at risk.

Girl killed for honour

Lucknow, June 05: A young girl was done to death while her boyfriend was struggling for survival after being attacked in the name of “family honour” in an Uttar Pradesh village.

According to an official spokesman, Hamza and Tahira were beaten “black and blue” when they decided to elope from Soran village in Muzaffarnagar district, about 400 km from here.

They were intercepted by the girl’s relatives, who forcibly brought them back to their native village.

KCR, Vijay Shanti resign from Lok Sabha membership

Hyderabad, July 05: The Telangana movement on Tuesday gathered further steam with TRS President K. Chandrasekhar Rao and party MP Vijay Shanthi resigning from their Lok Sabha membership in support of the demand for a separate state.

Mr. Chadrasekhar Rao and Ms. Shanthi faxed their resignation letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Mr. Rao would meet the Speaker personally in a day or two, TRS sources said.

State Textiles Minister Shankar Rao, who is in the U.S., has also faxed his resignation to the Deputy Speaker, taking the total number of state ministers who have quit to 12.

Deployments take toll on US Army kids

Washington, July 05: A new study in the United States suggests that the children of deployed soldiers are more susceptible to develop metal illnesses than other kids.

Children with a parent deployed in Iraq for long periods of time were more likely to receive a mental health diagnosis, a report published on Monday in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine shows.

The study included 307,520 children, aged between 5 and 17, with at least one parent serving in active duty in the US Army.

67 mn school age kids deprived of education: UN

Geneva, July 05: At least 67 million children of school-going age are still denied the right to education due to financial, social or other challenges, such as health problems and armed conflict, a UN agency stated Monday.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the principal UN agency for coordinating and reviewing economic and social policies, released the statistics Monday during its annual meeting in Geneva, Xinhua reported.

ECOSOC said about 796 million adults still lack basic literacy, taking up 17 percent of the world adult population.

Bus transport paralysed in Telangana

Hyderabad, July 05: Bus transport came to a grinding halt across Telangana Tuesday as a two-day shutdown called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) began in Hyderabad and nine other districts amid tight security.

State-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspended all its services in Telangana districts and also the services which connect Telangana with Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and other towns in Andhra and Rayalaseema.

APSRTC cancelled all its bus services in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad causing inconvenience to commuters.

Various verses of the Holy Quran direct us to treat our relatives nicely.  Those who cut off relationships are declared as those who spread corruption in this world and that they will suffer losses on the day of Qiyamah.  Allah Ta’ala says:

Those who break Allah’s Covenant after it is ratified and who sunder what Allah has ordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: these cause loss (only) to themselves.  Surah Baqarah (2:27)

We are ordered to treat our parents also in the best possible manner.

Afghan MPs warn Pakistan over attacks

Kabul, July 05: Afghan lawmakers have warned that if Pakistani cross-border missile attacks against their soil continue, Kabul will break its diplomatic ties with Islamabad.

During the open session of the parliament on Monday, the lawmakers described Pakistani missile attacks against Afghanistan’s eastern provinces in the past four weeks as “aggression” and approved a motion that states in case such attacks persist, “irreversible” events will transpire in their bilateral ties, IRNA reported.

The MP’s also emphasized on retaliatory measures against the Pakistani missile attacks.
