Constable killed in encounter with criminals

Lucknow, July 05: A police constable was today killed in an exchange of fire with a group of criminals, who were trying to flee after a loot in Muzaffarnagar district.

The constable, posted with surveillance cell of the Muzaffarnagar police, was killed in the encounter near Dindauli village under Jhinjahna police station area, police said.

On getting a tip-off, that some miscreants connected with a loot case were fleeing in a car on the Shamli-Karnal road, a police team reached and challenged them which led to the encounter, they said.

Rajpura, July 05: An engineering student was killed and two were injured after some students clashed inside a college premises here, police said Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Himanshu, in his early 20s, and he hailed from Himachal Pradesh. He was staying in the hostel of Surya Engineering College.

Disclose names of black money holders: RJD

New Delhi, July 05: RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday said the government should disclose names of all Indians who have stashed black money in foreign banks and demanded that these money be brought back to the country and “redistributed” among the poor.

“The black money stashed abroad is that belonging to the poor and the same needs to be distributed among the poor,” he told reporters here.

When asked as to how it should be distributed, Lalu said: “Let the money first come, then a policy on how to go about its distribution can be made”.

HC notice to Amitabh, Sony TV for insulting Bose

Mumbai, July 05: The Bombay High Court today issued notices to Amitabh Bachchan and Sony Television in response to a PIL which challenges a promo in ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ claiming it has insulted and maligned the slogan ‘Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi doonga’, coined by Subhash Chandra Bose.

The notices were issued by Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice G S Godbole who asked the Bollywood actor, anchor of the show, and Sony TV Channel to file a reply by July 28.

Sensex down 70 pts on profit-booking, sharp dip in RIL

Mumbai, July 05: The BSE benchmark Sensex fell 70 points to 18,745 today as investors booked profits and blue chips like RIL and BHEL dipped sharply amid a mixed trend in global stock markets.

Brokers said the market had reached high levels, leading to profit booking ahead of the first quarter earnings. They said high borrowing costs could have crimped demand and hurt corporate earnings.

“We won’t jump straightaway to all-party meeting, we will have to first talk to people of Andhra Pradesh and people of other political parties and different regions,” party general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad told.

Forbesganj police firing: LJP demands CBI probe

Two TDP MPs resign from LS, attack Chidambaram

New Delhi, July 05: Joining the bandwagon of those resigning, two TDP MPs from Telangana region today quit from the Lok Sabha in protest against delay in formation of a separate state and targeted Home Minister P Chidambaram for being “totally responsible” for the present situation.

Nama Nageswara Rao, the TDP Parliamentary Party leader, and Ramesh Rathod met Speaker Meira Kumar here and tendered their resignation.

TDP has six members in the Lok Sabha. Rao and Rathore hail from the Telangana region.

Twin bomb blasts kill 35, injure 28 in Iraq

Baghdad, July 05: At least 35 people have been killed and 28 others sustained injuries after two massive explosions targeted a municipal government building in Iraq’s Salahuddin province.

The coordinated twin bomb attacks happened on Tuesday in Taji town, located approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, as a car bomb and another explosive device went off outside the government building, Xinhua news agency reported.

Police cordoned off the area after the incident and launched an extensive investigation.

Five US-led forces killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, July 05: At least five foreign soldiers have been killed in separate militant attacks in eastern and southern Afghanistan, amid escalating violence in the war-torn country.

The western military alliance said four foreign troops were killed in a roadside bomb explosion and a militant attack in Afghanistan’s east.

Another soldier was killed in an attack in the country’s south, NATO said.

NATO has not revealed any details about the nationalities of the slain soldiers. At least 289 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

Hyderabad, July 05: A day after 75 MLAs from the Congress and TDP resigned for the Telangana cause, the TRS and BJP too jumped on the resignation bandwagon on Tuesday.

Eleven TRS legislators and two from the BJP have announced they would give up their Assembly membership today, in support of the demand for a separate Telangana state. Earlier in the day, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao and party MP Vijay Shanthi too resigned from their Lok Sabha membership.
