Muslim personal law board says RTE is against minorities intrests

Lucknow, July 06: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is at loggerheads with the Congress-led UPA government. The board made it public by announcing to launch an agitation against some of the government’s most publicized legislation and proposed measures.

The Board is upset by several clauses in the Right to Education Act, 2009, Waqf Amendment Bill 2011, Communal Violence Bill and Direct Taxes Code Bill, 2011.This has come at a time when Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is on a march in western UP to win over farmers and Muslims.

Raped teen girl’s decomposed body found in canal

Bijnore, July 06: The body of a 14-year-old Dalit girl, who was allegedly kidnapped on June 29, was found in a decomposed state in a canal, police said today.

Kavita was kidnapped on the way to nearby fields in Amman Nagar and was raped and murdered, they said.

Her body was found two days ago with relatives identifying her from the clothes she was wearing on the day she went missing, they said.

Station Officer Navratna Gotam and Sub-Inspector N K Varma have been suspended by SP Mahesh Mishra following complaints of negligence in the case.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee never ‘endorsed’ Article 370

Jammu, July 06: The BJP today lashed out at A G Noorani’s statement in his yet-to-be-released book that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had endorsed Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir.

It said the statement is an attempt to distort history at the behest of separatist friendly pseudo-secularists and pseudo-intellectuals.

“The late leader had suggested to first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to put a time-bound rider on ‘Article 370’ and specify for how long it was being envisaged,” BJP J&K chief spokesperson and National Executive Member Dr Jitendra Singh said in a statement here.

31 held for ‘dirty dancing’ by police

Mumbai, July 06: The law enforcers are back to moral policing. The Bangur Nagar police raided a lounge, Oro, in Mumbai’s Malad for playing DJ music without permission and rounded up 31 youngsters on the charge that they were dancing ‘indecently’ late on Saturday night.

The police fined them Rs 1,200 each for “indecent behaviour” under the Bombay Police Act before releasing them on early Sunday. The police justified their action against the youngsters on “moral grounds”. This is perhaps the first time the police have rounded up revellers for “indecent dancing”.

Army must handover person responsible for Dilshan”s death:Jaya

Chennai, July 06: Three days after the death of 13-year-old Dilshan in a shooting incident in Chennai, no breakthrough was in sight today even as chief minister J Jayalalithaa pressed the army to handover the person responsible for it to the police.

On his part, Army Chief General V K Singh promised strong action against anybody found guilty, but said the force should not be defamed if any individual is suspected.

A Lt Colonel and a jawan were quizzed in Chennai for the third day today by CB-CID, the agency entrusted with the probe.

Clash between student and police in Osmania campus

Hyderabad, July 06: Tension prevailed at Osmania University (OU) here on the second day of the 48-hour bandh called by Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC), after pro-Telangana students again clashed with police.

Trouble started after police stopped the students from undertaking a protest-march from the OU campus to Gun Park (Martyrs’ Memorial) around noon in support of Telangana. There were similar clashes yesterday too.

Students hurled stones at police near the NCC gate on the campus, and the latter responded by firing teargas shells, a senior police officer said.

After 24 years, doc punished for negligence

Mumbai, July 06: A surgeon has been punished for medical negligence nearly 24 years after he committed the mistake.

A metropolitan magistrate condemned the 80-year-old Dr. Prafulla Desai, head surgeon and a Padma Vibhushan receiver, of medical carelessness while treating a female with terminal stomach cancer.

The magistrate sentenced Desai to go through simple custody till the rising of the court and asked him to make a payment of Rs 50,000 as fine to her hubby and complainant, retired IAS officer Dr. PC Singhi.

Desai is attached to Bombay Hospital and Breach Candy.

OU exams postponed after students-police clash in campus

Hyderabad, July 06: All examinations scheduled to be held from tomorrow in Osmania University have been postponed after violence rocked the varsity when pro-Telangana students clashed with police in support of the separate statehood demand.

“All the OU exams to be held from July 7-11 are postponed. There will be no change in the exams schedule beginning from July 12. The revised dates of the postponed exams will be announced later,” the Registrar of the University said.

Saudi airline makes emergency landing in Chennai airport

Chennai, July 06: A Jeddah-bound Saudi Airlines plane with about 200 passengers on board today made an emergency landing here after pilots noticed smoke emanating from the cockpit.

Airport sources here said the pilots noticed smoke mid-air when the aircraft SV-841 was on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah and it was allowed emergency landing.

The passengers were evacuated to safety, sources said.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay, they said.

23 cm-long worm taken out of woman’s brain

Shanghai, July 06: A 23 cm long tapeworm has been surgically removed from a Chinese woman’s brain.

Doctors in a Nanjing hospital removed the worm from the brain of 24-year-old Li Fang a week ago, the Shanghai Daily quoted the Yangtze Evening News as reporting.

Li said she was disgusted at the thought of the tapeworm living in her brain.

Li’s husband Yang said she suffered her first seizure last December and she was taken to hospital where it was detected that there was something in her brain but doctors could not determine what it was.

SBI launches debit-cum-transit card for Bangalore Metro Rail

Bangalore, July 06: SBI and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) today launched SBI debit-cum-transit card, designed to facilitate hassle-free travel in the upcoming mass transport system.

Besides acting as a transit card, the SBI debit-cum-transit card can be used for ATM transactions, at shops and malls and also at the bank”s green channel counters, SBI officials said.

The card, which consists of an e-purse that facilitates storing rupee value for travel in ”Namma Metro”, was launched at a function attended by SBI Chairman Pratip Chaudhuri, among others.

New Delhi, July 06: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said he would consult the chief ministers of Maoist-affected states to examine how the Supreme Court order on disarming special police officers (SPOs) would impact operations against the guerrillas.

I will have to discuss it (the Supreme Court order) with the chief ministers on the impact it will have on the anti-Maoist operations, the home minister told reporters, a day after the apex court asked the governments at the centre and in the states not to arm civilians in the name of SPOs.

Take decision on Telangana immediately: CPM
