30 kg silver stolen from jewellery shop

Hyderabad, June 30: Thieves stole silver and cash from a jewellery store at General Bazar on Wednesday after making a hole on the ceiling of an century-old building where the shop is located. Nearly 30 kg silver bars and Rs 2 lakh in cash was stolen.
The theft took place in Sri Jala Ram Jewellers located at the General Bazar, which is just a few feet away from the Mahankali police station.
The store-owner, Yogesh who resides at Warasiguda closed the shop around 10 p.m on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m to open the shop. As he entered, he found the shop ransacked.

US vows to finish Al Qaeda’s core

Washington, June 30: After its leader Osama Bin Laden, the US is planning to destroy Al Qaeda completely for which it needs to dismantle its core in the tribal regions of Pakistan and prevents its ability to re-establish a safe haven in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, a senior US official has said.

“We aim to render the heart of Al Qaeda incapable of launching attacks against our homeland, our citizens, or our allies, as well as preventing the group from inspiring its affiliates and adherents to do so,” John Brennan, assistant to the president for Homeland Security, said Wednesday.

Priest raped abducted teenage girl for 8 months

Muzaffarnagar, June 30: A teenage girl was allegedly abducted and raped by the priest of a local temple in Banat town here, police said today.

The 35-year-old priest has been arrested and sent to 14 days of judicial custody by a local court here, police said.

According to the prosecution, Balkishan had abducted the 17-year-old girl and raped her for eight months after which she became pregnant.

On a complaint filed by the girl’s father, the police arrested the priest from Gurgaon (Haryana) where he was living with the abducted girl.

Neeraj Grover murder case: Maria Susairaj guilty

Mumbai, June 30: In the notorious Neeraj Grover murder case, former Kannad actress Maria Susairaj and her fiancee naval officer Emile Jerome Mathew were held guilty by the Mumbai court on Thursday.

The engaged couple was arrested in May 2008 for the murder of Grover, who was the brain behind quiz show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? hosted by Shah Rukh Khan.

Matthew allegedly killed Grover as he suspected Maria of having an affair with him. Grover was murdered in Maria’s apartment in suburban Mumbai on May 7.

Mumbai, June 30: Noted composer Ismail Darbar on Wednesday formally joined the BJP. The Bollywood composer, who hails from Surat, is likely to be projected as a ‘minority face’ of the party in the next year’s Gujarat assembly elections, party sources said. State BJP chief, R C Faldu, announced formal induction of Darbar into BJP at a press conference.

“I have joined politics to fulfil my mother’s dream,” Darbar said. “My mother had told me on the death-bed that you have done well in life and now you should serve the people of Surat. I wanted to fulfil her dream,” Darbar said.

Jaipur, June 30:In a huge embarrassment for teachers across the country, a professor at the Rajasthan University has been arrested for allegedly demanding sexual favours from his student.

The victim has alleged that her research guide Dr R K Singhal of the Physics department was harassing her for months.

The professor asked the girl to have sexual relations with him if she wanted to complete her PhD. Besides molesting her in February, Singhal and his colleague S N Dolia allegedly even blackmailed the student by morphing her face onto some obscene pictures.

Saudi bans domestic workers from 2 countries

Riyadh, June 30: Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday it would stop granting work permits to domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines, following hiring conditions imposed by the Asian countries.

The Ministry of Labour said it would “stop issuing work visas to bring domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines, effective from Saturday” due to “the terms of recruitment announced by the two countries”, according to a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

10 more MMTS trains from July 1 in twin cities

Hyderabad, June 30: The South Central Railway(SCR) announced to introduce ten additional MMTS Services between Lingampalli and Falaknuma with effect from July 1 this year.

The ten new trains will be introduced to meet the increasing demands of commuter traffic in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, SCR said in a release here yesterday.

Besides the ten trains, the SCR will augment the 83 MMTS Services which are presently running with six cars (coaches) to run with nine cars (coaches).

Congress slams Modi for destroying 2002 riot documents

New Delhi, June 30: The Congress said Thursday that the Gujarat government had deliberately destroyed intelligence records related to the 2002 riots in the state.

“It is astounding that vital documents pertaining to the carnage/massacre in which the needle of suspicion points directly at the CM of Gujarat (Narendra Modi) have been destroyed. Papers get destroyed in this manner… this is nothing short of a criminal conspiracy to see that the truth does not emerge,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

Depressed’ mom murders baby boy, arrested

Chennai, June 30: A woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her six day old baby boy, at Tambaram on Tuesday.

Sources said, D Revathi, of Bhajanai Koil Street in Red Hills, gave birth to a baby boy six days ago. Her husband was a daily wage labourer.

Revathi was said to be suffering from depression for the past few months. On Monday, she was asleep in the house with the baby, her motherinlaw Rani and other relatives.

Scientists develop sensitive skin for robots

London, June 30: Human skin is a biological wonder, registering a multitude of sensations from the finest breath to touch or pain. Now scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, are developing a synthetic skin for robots with a similar quality.

The synthetic skin will provide important tactile information to the robot and thus supplement its perception formed by camera eyes, infrared scanners and gripping hands.

Malaysia wants more English volunteer teachers from US

Kuala Lumpur, June 30: Malaysia has asked the US State Department to consider sending 300 English volunteer teachers to Malaysia under the Fulbright Programme.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who disclosed this, said the increased number sought was due to the Government’s greater emphasis on English Language proficiency in schools.

He said he had held several rounds of discussions with Education Minis­try officials on the matter and the consensus was that more volunteer teachers were needed.

World’s longest natural gas pipeline in China

Beijing, June 30: China’s second east-west natural gas pipeline, which is the world’s longest, began operation Thursday.

The pipeline, connecting central Asia and China, will send natural gas from Turkmenistan to east China’s Pearl river delta after passing through 15 of the country’s provinces, reported Xinhua.

The pipeline has a total length of 8,700 km.

It was built with 142.2 billion yuan ($21.98 billion) in investments.

HC rejects bail pleas of convicts in Bilkis Bano case

Mumbai, June 30: The Bombay high court on Thursday rejected bail pleas of the seven convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gangrape case after observing that it was a “serious offence”. “Considering the seriousness and gravity of the case, the accused cannot be released on bail till the final disposal of their appeals aga inst conviction,” a division bench of justices NH Patil and Mridula Bhatkar observed.

All the seven accused were sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in 2008 following which they moved HC seeking bail pending disposal of the appeals.
