Gaddafi arrest warrant sparks celebrations in Libya

Cairo, June 28: Wild celebrations erupted in Libya’s besieged rebel-held city of Misrata as the news that the international criminal court had issued an arrest warrant for Muammar Gaddafi spread through the city.

Warrants for arrest over crimes against humanity committed against opponents of the Libyan regime were also issued for Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, and the Libyan intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senussi.

DU: Another fake caste certificate gang busted

New Delhi, June 27: Delhiites and DU aspirants had not even got over the 100 per cent cut-off nightmare that an admission racket has been busted at the Central University.

Three people have been arrested for selling fake caste certificates and helping at least 12 students get admissions in top notch colleges in Delhi University including the prestigious SRCC.

A student who scored 94 per cent took the fake route to secure a seat at the college.

Home ministry asks ED, IT to check terror funding

New Delhi, June 27: The Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate have been asked by the government to pull up their socks and expedite disposal of cases related to terror financing in various parts of the country.

This was decided at a meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary G K Pillai where he asked both the departments to immediately inform the Home Ministry when such cases are traced and take immediate action, official sources said.

The meeting was attended by top officials, including ED Chief Arun Mathur and police chiefs of terrorism-affected states.

Stalin meets Kanimozhi in Tihar jail

New Delhi, June 27: DMK leader M K Stalin on Monday met his half-sister and party MP Kanimozhi, arrested in connection with the 2G scam, at Tihar jail here.

Stalin, who flew in from Chennai this morning, met Kanimozhi at the Tihar jail accompanied by DMK Parliamentary Party Leader T R Baalu and MP A K S Vijayan.

The atmosphere was emotionally-charged, and Stalin and Kanimozhi were seen talking to each other for some time in Tamil. The meeting lasted for over 30 minutes.

Indian Army raising new special forces battalion

New Delhi, June 27: Strengthening its capabilities to carry out special operations, the Indian Army is raising a new special forces battalion which will be deployed in the north-eastern sector.

A new battalion of the Parachute Regiment — 11 Para (SF) — is being raised and will be first deployed in the north-eastern sector, Army sources said here.

This will be eighth special forces battalion of the Parachute Regiment and will be deployed in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in that region, they said.

Maya raj: Journo ‘forcibly’ picked up by police

Lucknow, June 27: A senior TV journalist was allegedly picked up “forcibly” by police in Hazratganj area here on Sunday night.

Shalabh Mani Tripathi, state bureau chief of a Hindi news channel, was picked up by SP (City) BP Ashok and Circle Officer Anup Kumar while he was coming out of his office.

Tripathi alleged that he and his colleague were not only manhandled but also abused by the cops.

“They caught us by the collar. You are mafia and we won’t leave you. They abused not just me, but also the entire media fraternity,” Tripathi said.

China a huge opportunity for Britain: Cameron

London, June 27: China provides a “huge opportunity” for British businesses, Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday after meeting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here.

Cameron announced trade agreements with China worth 1.4 billion pounds (around $2.2 billion), BBC reported.

The British prime minister hailed what he termed a “deeper dialogue” but said political and economic progress must go hand in hand with respect for human rights.

Human rights was “the best guarantor” of prosperity and stability, Cameron said.

Bolivia bus plunges into ravine, 28 die

La Paz, June 27: Police say a bus has run off a foggy mountain road in Bolivia, killing at least 28 people.

Police Col. Placido Arroyo tells the radio station Fidels that the bus plunged about 300 feet (about 100 meters) down a ravine on Sunday. It was en route from Villazon near the Argentine border to the city of Tarija.

Arroyo says the cause of the accident is under investigation, but he says there was a dense fog at the time of the crash.

Rahul Gandhi meets assaulted UP Dalit girl

New Delhi, June 27: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Monday met at a hospital here a Dalit girl who was blinded by her assailants after she resisted rape in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

Gandhi arrived at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where the girl has been shifted for treatment, at 10.45 am and spoke to her as well as her family members.

According to official sources, Gandhi also interacted with the team of doctors treating the girl. The doctors told him that the girl has lost vision in one eye and efforts are on to improve the sight in the other.

Andhra ignores Telangana objections over police test

Hyderabad, June 27: Ignoring objections from Telangana groups, the Andhra Pradesh government Monday made it clear that it would go ahead with the recruitment of sub-inspectors of police without deleting a clause that treats Hyderabad as a free zone and allows people from other regions of the state to appear in the test.

Teacher arrested for making sex video with student

Jammu, June 27: A college teacher in Jammu and Kashmir has been arrested for making sex video with his student.

Identifying the accused as Tariq Qyoom Tak (30), the police said that he has been working as a teacher at the Islamia Faridiya Education and Research Institute, a private college at Kishtwar.

Tak was arrested at Vailo in Kokernag area of Anantnag district, where he had fled after the video clip recorded by him got leaked.

Govt tampering with CAG report on KG Basin, suspects Joshi

New Delhi, June 27: PAC Chairperson Murli Manohar Joshi today said he suspected that the government was tampering with the CAG draft report on KG-D6 Basin and sought to know the reason for the delay in vetting the report.

“The government should make clear whether it had ordered a performance or a special audit. The CAG has pointed out some anomalies in its draft report. I suspect the government is tampering with the report. This should not be done,” he said.

Militants kill six in Pakistan

Islamabad, June 27: At least six people have been killed and seven others injured, in various violent attacks in Pakistan as militancy gains momentum in the volatile state.

Separate gun attacks in different parts of Karachi claimed the lives of three people and injured five others on Sunday, police sources told Press TV.

At least one person was killed and two more wounded in armed clashes between two groups in Bilal Colony area in Karachi’s Korangi town.

Elsewhere, an unidentified man was gunned down near Passport Office in Saddar area of Karachi.
