Suspended TDP MLA Nagarm seeks support for fast

Hyderabad, June 28: In the face of increasing attack from his parent party, suspended Telugu Desam (TDP) MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy is mobilising political support for his proposed two-day fast on July 3 and 4 on Telangana issue, to prove a point to his detractors.

Dr. Reddy, has already sought the support of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) by meeting K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday, and on Monday he called on senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bandaru Dattatreya as part of his homework to make the protest a success.

College Principal molests girl for marks, arrested

Jaipur, June 28: The Principal of a government nursing college was arrested for allegdly molesting a girl student for marks and taking a bribe of Rs. 4,000 from her two friends for passing them in their annual exams in Rajasthan”s Sikar district.

Trilok Chand Tripathi had made sexual advances to a girl of nursing Ist year before annual exams for giving her extra marks in the exams and also threatened not to give her even passing marks if she did not accept his proposal, Additional SP (Anti Corruption Bureau), Sikar, Moolchand Rana, said.

35 lakh worth watches, gold coins stolen

Hyderabad, June 28: Thieves decamped with watches and gold coins worth Rs. 35 lakh from the warehouse of Titan watch company at Gundlapochampally in Petbasheerabad on Monday.

Police suspect role of insiders in the theft as the locks of the warehouse were intact. The warehouse contains all types of Titan watches, but the stolen were mostly costly ones – each priced above Rs. One lakh, the police said.

Gold coins, to be given as gifts to customers who purchase watches worth above Rs. One lakh, were also stolen along with the watches.

Iran builds breast cancer detector robot

Tehran, June 28 (IANS) Iranian scientists have built a robot that can detect breast cancer tumours, the ISNA news agency reported.

The robot has been developed by the Amir Kabir University, also known as Tehran Polytechnic.

It can be used for three-dimensional detection of breast cancer tumours.

The robot is able to differentiate between malignant and benign cancer with 95 percent accuracy.

Scientists said it does not impose any damage to the patient.

VK sone nabbed at rave party

Pune, june 28 :THE POLICE busted a rave party at Khalapar, near Karjat, on Sunday night and detained 300 young men and women for a few hours. They also arrested an inspector from the anti- narcotics cell, Anil Jadhav and four others from the spot.

The raid by Mumbai and Raigad police was conducted at the Mount View hotel and resort near Karjat, about 60 km. from Mumbai, between 10.30 pm and 11.15 pm.

Many of the young men and women present belonged to well off families. Sakshi Khanna, the son of actor and BJP politician Vinod Khanna, was one of them.

Hazare puts conditions for Ramdev to join fast

New Delhi, June 28: After allowing Baba Ramdev to share the dais with him during his fast at Jantar Mantar in April and later voicing support to the yoga guru, veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare has now laid down a set of “conditions” for Ramdev before letting him join his proposed fast in August.

Speaking to TV reporters in Maharashtra late on Sunday, Anna Hazare said: “Baba has expressed his wish to sit on fast with me but I have placed a set of demands in front of him. If they are met, then I will think about it.”

Ranjan Mathai to be new foreign secretary

New Delhi, June 28: Ending weeks of speculation, the government has decided to appoint Ranjan Mathai, India’s ambassador to France, as the next foreign secretary.

Mathai will succeed Nirupama Rao, who is tipped to be India’s next ambassador to the US. Rao will succeed Meera Shankar in Washington, sources said.

A 1974 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, the exact details of Mathai’s appointment will be announced soon. The cabinet committee on appointments met Monday to finalise Mathai’s name for foreign secretary.

Yemen plagued by water shortage

Sanaa, June 28: Dearth of water reportedly triggered by fuel shortage and power cuts is taking its toll on the public in Yemen’s capital — already a scene of unbridled regime crackdown on protests.

Truck drivers have started refusing to supply residences in Sana’a with water, complaining of insufficient fuel, Xinhua reported on Monday.

The government, meanwhile, blames the water shortage on power cuts for which it holds alleged obstructionists responsible.

“We can live without electricity but cannot without water,” said a local female named Um Mahir.

London, June 28: Chewing sugar-free gum after operations can help bowel cancer patients get their digestive systems back to normal and recover faster, scientists say.

Studies have found that patients undergoing surgery likely to affect their bowel function were fit enough to go home as much as two days earlier than other patients if they chewed gum. It’s also found that chewing gum has helped new moms recovering from caesarean sections, as well as patients undergoing stomach surgery, who can suffer from painful cramps until digestion returns to normal.

Mayawati govt ‘neck-deep’ in corruption: Digvijay

Sonebhadra, June 28: Alleging the Mayawati-led government in Uttar Pradesh to be “neck-deep” in corruption, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Monday said all those responsible for it would be sent to jail if the party came to power in the state.

“Mayawati government is neck deep in corruption… on coming to power, Congress would take an account from her and her associates in this connection and cases would be lodged against them and culprits would be sent to jail,” Singh, who was here to take part in a programme, said.

Indian, Pak to open new trade point at Wagah

Lahore, June 28: Indian and Pakistani officials on Monday worked out modalities for opening a new check point at the Wagah land border crossing for trade and commercial activities.

The meeting between officials of the two countries was held in connection with an agreement for opening a separate trade route at Wagah to facilitate businessmen.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Joint Interior Secretary Shabbir Ahmed while the Indian team was led by his counterpart KK Mittal.

Pranab in US for India-US economic dialogue

Washington, June 28: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Washington on Monday to participate in the India-US economic partnership dialogue, during which he is expected to meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Being billed as highest economic meeting between the two largest democratic countries of the world, senior economic and regulatory officials from India and the US will join the US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Mukherjee for the second annual meeting of the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership.

Pakistani Taliban splits

Islamabad, June 28: The Pakistani Taliban has split into two groups, IRNA news agency reported Monday.

Fazal Saeed Haqqani, leader of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in Kurram Agency near the border with Afghanistan, separated from the main outfit and formed a new group called Tehreek-e-Taliban (Islami).

He said he formed the new group because killing innocent people in suicide bomb blasts at mosques is against Islamic teachings.

Haqqani played a vital role in setting up of training centres in different parts of the country. His associates are known for kidnapping people for ransom.

Patient burnt alive in oxygen cylinder blast

New Delhi, June 28: A 55-year-old patient, on late Monday, was burnt alive after an oxygen cylinder blasted at the ICU room in government PGIMER hospital here, police said.

“Kindar Singh, a cancer patient, was burnt alive after the oxygen cylinder blasted around 11.35 PM. The deceased was hospitalised there for a month,” they said.

The deceased hails from Doraha in Punjab’s Ludhiana district. Investigation is on into the matter, they said.

Mega fighter deal of 126 fighter jets to strengthen India’s airspace

New Delhi, June 28: India proposes to buy 126 fighter jets worth over USD 10 billion to strengthen its airspace, Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said on Monday.

Talking to reporters here in his home district East Godavari, he said the Defence Ministry has sanctioned over Rs. 40,000 crore for the mega deal.

The ministry had shortlisted the European Eurofighter and the French Dassault Rafale for the 126
Medium-Multirole Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) deal.
