67pc want Islamisation of society

Lahore, June 01: As many as 67 per cent people of Pakistan want the government take steps for Islamisation, a clear indication that for whatever reasons they have lost faith in the existing system.

According to a survey carried out by Gilani Research Foundation, 31 per cent people want the government take the required steps at once. However, 48 per cent think that the needed steps should be taken one by one.

PM asks Ramdev not to fast

New Delhi, June 01: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said he has urged yoga guru Baba Ramdev not to go ahead with his hunger strike from June 4 and assured him that the government was tackling the problem of corruption and black money with all its resources.

Speaking to reporters here, Manmohan Singh said that he welcomed the suggestions of Baba Ramdev and agreed that corruption was a big problem.

“This is not a personal issue. We all agree with Ramdev that corruption is a big problem and that we are committed to tackle it with all the resources at our disposal,” he said.

IAEA says Japan underestimated tsunami threat

Tokyo, June 01: Japan underestimated the hazard posed by tsunamis to nuclear plants, the UN atomic watchdog said, while praising Tokyo’s response to the March 11 disaster as “exemplary”.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Wednesday also stressed the importance of “regulatory independence and clarity of roles”, touching on the fact that Japan’s nuclear watchdog is part of the ministry of trade and industry, which promotes atomic power.

Wary of Wakf

When the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2010, was passed in the Lok Sabha a year ago, everyone thought that the amendment was a progressive step that would help improve and streamline the administration of wakf properties across the country. However, a year down the line, when the bill is awaiting approval in the Rajya Sabha, many Muslim organisations have begun to express their scepticism over it. Right from the definition of wakf properties to the powers of the proposed wakf tribunals, many provisions of the bill are now being questioned.

Shahzad was killed for reporting truth

Islamabad, June 01: Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, thought to have been picked up by the ISI and later found tortured and murdered, “paid the price for reporting the truth”, a leading daily said Wednesday.

Shahzad, who wrote extensively on Islamist groups, went missing Sunday. The body of 40-year-old correspondent of Hong Kong-based Asia Times Online was found in a canal in Mandi Bahauddin area of Punjab province.

Asthma’s fish medicine banned for kids

Hyderabad, June 01: A fresh controversy hit the famous ‘fish medicine’ therapy for asthma patients as Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission Tuesday ordered that children below the age of 14 should not be administered it.

Acting on a petition by Balula Hakkula Sangham, an NGO working for children’s rights, the commission asked the Hyderabad district administration to ensure that no child below 14 years is given the ‘fish medicine’.

The annual event of distribution of fish medicine is to take place at Exhibition Grounds here June 8-9.

Man kills family over wife’s infidelity

Bhubaneshwar, June 01: In a gruesome incident, a man here allegedly murdered his wife and two sons and later surrendered to Police. The man works as a security-guard of a state-run company, officials said Wednesday.

The incident happened early Tuesday in Orissa’s Ganjam district when 55-year-old B.Hadibandhu Dora killed his wife B.Nilima Dora, 45, and sons Jagannath, 28 and Cinku, 9 at his village Kaliabali, about 170 km from here, while they were sleeping.

Kolkata to become second London!

Kolkata, June 01: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said that her government would adopt necessary schemes for beautification of Kolkata centering the Ganga river in line with the beautification of London along the Thames river.

“We have told RITES (Railway India technical and economic services) to submit a detailed plan report to the state government within a month,” Banerjee told reporters at Writers’ Buildings.

She said that RITES made a plan presentation during the day.

NDA to support Telangana in Parliament

Karimnagar, June 01: Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that the NDA would support the Telangana Bill if the Centre tabled it in next Parliament session.

“I have confidence that the bill on Telangana will be introduced in Parliament in July and by that time, I will take the support of all the allied parties of NDA. In case, the Congress fails to introduce the Bill in July 2011, the BJP assures to give Telangana in 2014 after coming into power,” she said addressing a pro-Telangana public meeting organised by the BJP here.

Assistant Professor ends life

Hyderabad, June 01: An assistant professor of a private engineering college allegedly committed suicide at her house in Alwal on Tuesday.

K Vidyavathi, an assistant professor at Malla Reddy Engineering College fell in love with Satya Sai, a private employee and got married to him two years ago.

Around 8 pm on Monday, Satya returned home and found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan. In a note written by her, she said no one was responsible for her death, the police said. However, the victim’s father alleged that his daughter was harassed by Satya which drove her to suicide.

Five nabbed for murder

Hyderabad, June 01: A history-sheeter and four of his associates were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a pickpocket.

The pickpocket, Salam, was murdered by the accused over a dispute between two gangs. The arrested include Mohd Ilyas, a history-sheeter of Chandrayangutta police and his associates, Rasheed Bin Abdullah, Sayed Zulfikar Hussain alias Nadeem, Md Naveed and Thakur Subash Singh.

Colonies at GHMC outskirts to get water soon

Hyderabad, June 01: The residents of the new colonies in the periphery of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits which do not have water supply and sewerage facilities may get them soon.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is going to initiate a new scheme called Total Infrastructure Project (TIP) using public contribution to put up water supply and sewerage facilities in these colonies.

Mobile phones may cause cancer: WHO

London, June 01: Using a mobile phone might increase the risk of developing certain types of brain tumors and consumers should consider ways of reducing their exposure, World Health Organisation (WHO) cancer experts said on Tuesday.

A working group of 31 scientists from 14 countries meeting at the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said a review of all the available scientific evidence suggested cell phone use should be classified as “possibly carcinogenic.”

Naidu visits Masqati at Care

Hyderabad, June 1: TDP chief Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu visited Mr. Ibraheem bin Abdullah Masqati MLC who is undergoing treatment at Care Banjara Hills. Later Mr. Naidu visited senior Congress leader G Venkat Swami at Yashoda hospital.

B’lore airport on high alert after IB tip-off

New Delhi, June 01: Bangalore airport has been put on high alert after a tip-off by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Security has also been tightened at the Chennai airport after officials at the Bangalore airport received a mysterious call on Tuesday night warning of a threat to a Bangalore-Chennai flight.

All Bangalore-Chennai flights being checked but no flights have been delayed.

The CISF has also formed a bomb squad to check all flights taking off from Bangalore.

An alert was also sounded at both the domestic and international airports in Chennai.

Mastermind of 9/11 charged again

Washington, June 01: For the second time, US prosecutors have filed charges with a military commission against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the Pakistani mastermind of Sep 11, 2001, terror attacks and four other suspects held in Guantanamo Bay.

The step was the first paving the way for an arraignment, Fox News reported Tuesday noting the body that oversees the commissions will make a decision on whether to accept the charges.

If accepted, the arraignment must take place within 30 days. That will essentially begin the trial process, though pre-trial motions could take as long as a year.

45 year-old Indian woman scales Mt Everest

New Delhi, June 01: Premlata Agarwal is not just another woman who climbed Mt Everest – she is the mother of two married daughters. At 45, she is also the oldest Indian woman to scale the highest mountain in the world.

What started off as an adventure in 2000 in the form of a hill climbing competition in Jamshedpur, ended at the altitude of more than 29000 feet.

Premlata said, “When I spoke to my daughters and husband for the first time fter creating the record, I told them that I have been able to fulfill their expectations.”

Headley told wife he ‘made a fool’ of Rana

Chicago, June 01: Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley has admitted he told one of his wives that he “made a fool” of his childhood friend Pakistani Canadian Tahawwur Rana, his co-accused in the Mumbai terror attack trial.

“I acknowledge that I made a fool of him. He should be released. Poor fellow is stuck for no reason. It was my fault,” Headley allegedly told his spouse, Rana’s lawyer Patrick Blegen told a Chicago Federal court Tuesday, Chicago Sun Times reported.
