Followers of Ramdev not allowed to stage protest at Jantar Mantar

New New Delhi, June 05: As the followers of Baba Ramdev were evicted from Ramlila Maidan, they gathered at the Jantar Mantar but here also they were prevented from staging protest by the police.

“About 30-40 people had gathered at the heavily barricaded Jantar Mantar, but they were asked to leave the place by the police,” said an aide of Baba Ramdev.

Though most of the people went to near-by Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, a few of them stayed but later they were also asked to leave the place.

Police had barricaded the area, even the media was not allowed to cross the barricade.

Attempt to kill Zardari foiled

Islamabad, June 05: An attempt to kill Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has been foiled after eight alleged plotters were nabbed from different parts of the country, Xinhua reported.

Four of them were held in Islamabad and four others were nabbed in Punjab province Saturday night.

Security forces first learnt about the plot on May 21 when they intercepted a call, the Express TV channel said.

Pakistani militants have vowed to avenge the death of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden who was gunned down by the US security forces in Pakistan’s Abbottabad town May 2.

Doctor arrested for selling newborn babies

Islamabad, June 05: A Pakistani lady doctor here has been arrested for selling newborn babies.

Fatima, a doctor, was arrested from a private hospital on Thursday night on the charge of selling newborn babies and she was sent to jail on 15-day judicial remand by a court on Friday, Dawn reported from Peshawar.

“We have recovered a five-month-old baby boy from her possession, which was sold for Rs.360,000,” said a police official who added that Fatima had sold several babies in the past.

The official said that the doctor had also sold several babies born out of wedlock.

Al Qaeda releases 100 minute video calls for individual jihad

Al Qaeda has released a two-part 100-minute video apparently produced after the death of Osama bin Laden that calls for individual acts of jihad on “enemy soil,” a US-based monitoring service said.

Among the several speakers are Ayman al-Zawahiri, Al Qaeda’s long-time number two to bin Laden, and American-born Adam Gadahn, who says that Muslims living in the West are “perfectly placed to play an important and decisive part in the jihad against the Zionists and Crusaders.”

Jaya request Andhra to release water from Kandaleru

Chennai, June 05: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today requested her Andhra Pradesh counterpart Kiran Kumar Reddy to order immediate release of water from Kandaleru reservoir to meet Chennai’s drinking water needs.

In a letter to Mr. Reddy, Ms. Jayalalithaa said during 2010-11, only 4.6 tmcft was received as against the annual entitlement of 12 tmcft (under an agreement between the two states).

The present storage levels “will not be adequate” to meet drinking water needs in the coming months, she said.

Ramdev asked to leave Delhi

New Delhi, June 05: There was high drama at the Ramlila Ground in New Delhi after a defiant Baba Ramdev refused to call off his fast despite the government’s best efforts. The government then hardened its stand and asked the yoga icon to leave Delhi.

Delhi Police served an externment order on Baba Ramdev and Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prevents unlawful assembly of five or more persons, was imposed. Police sources say the order was issued after Baba Ramdev used the Ramlila Ground for staging a hunger strike against corruption instead of a yoga camp.

Digvijay demands investigation into Baba’s activities

New Delhi, June 05: Hours after Delhi police disrupted Ramdev’s hunger strike, Congress leader Digvijay Singh today justified the action and demanded investigation into his activities since 1994, alleging that he has cheated many people.

Singh, who has been critical of Ramdev for long, called him a “thug” and said the treatment meted out to him was appropriate for such a person.

New delhi, Jun 5 (UNI) Terming the late night police action on his supporters as ‘unfortunate’, Baba Ramdev today severely condemned police excesses on his followers.

”They have not committed any sin. So why were they subjected to such brutality,”Baba Ramdev said while talking to a TV channel.

Speaking from an undisclosed location, he challenged the government

Two linemen electrocuted in Attapur

Hyderabad, June 05: Two lives were snuffed out and one boy got critically injured in two power-related accidents in the operational limits of CPDCL Metro Zone in the city on Saturday.

In one incident, two contract labourers — Md.Ghouse (30) of Kishenbagh and Md.Baba (24) — of Bahadurpura got electrocuted while attending to a power supply problem in Attapur.

Tense lull in Yemen capital as army rifts surface

Sanee, June 05: A precarious calm returned to Yemen’s capital on Saturday as President Ali Abdullah Saleh vowed to hit back after he was wounded in shelling of his compound and a top general defected to the opposition.

Sporadic shelling and rocket fire rattled Al Hassaba district of northern Sanaa where dissident tribesman Sheikh Sadiq Al Ahmar, locked in deadly battles with Saleh’s troops, has his base, witnesses said, Agence France-Presse reported.

Police arrests Ramdev, venue cleared

New Delhi, June 5: Hundreds of police swooped on the Ramlila ground here just after midnight Saturday and forcibly removed Baba Ramdev after dispersing his restive supporters with tear gas and batons, ending a high-profile hunger strike against corruption he launched less than 24 hours earlier.

In an operation that was clearly meticulously planned, Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel desceneded on the protest venue in the heart of the capital taking by surprise both Ramdev and the mass of his sleeping supporters.

Akbar attack case: CCS police to collect blood, voice samples

Hyderabad, June 05: The Nampally criminal court here on Saturday has permitted the CCS police to collect samples of blood and voice of the accused persons arrested in the Barkas shoot-out case in old city.

Seven arrested in Bahadurpura double murder case

Hyderabad, June 05: Police on Saturday arrested seven persons in a case related to the killing of Aijaz and Malik Imran at Bahadurpura, while Murtuza ‘pahelwan’, who passed on the information about Aijaz’s movements, is still at large.

The South zone DCP, Vineet Brijlal, said at a press conference that Murtuza had alerted the accused about the presence of Aijaz at Akbar function hall and told them about his movements over mobile phone. Murtuza and Aijaz were involved in property dispute.

New Delhi, June 05: A group of around 25 women protestors today heckled a senior Delhi Police official after they were enraged by the police action at the Ramlila Maidan in dispersing those supporting Baba Ramdev’s fast and protests.

There were many protests about men constables forcibly evicting women who were jostled and pushed around. There were no women constables till early dawn, and at night men constables, in contravention of the law, allegedly used force on many women protesters.

Ramdev is a cheat: Digvijay Singh

New Delhi, June 5: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh Sunday slammed yoga guru Baba Ramdev calling him a “cheat” who was trying to “agitate” people in the garb of anti-corruption protest.

Digvijay Singh said that Ramdev and the government had reached an agreement before he launched his protest fast at Ramlila Ground here but he “backed out”.

“He cheated people. He is a thug. Media should know who they are giving so much attention to,” the senior Congress leader told reporters, hours after police whisked Ramdev to an undisclosed location.

Ramdev being taken to Haridwar: Pillai

New Delhi, June 5: Home Secretary G.K. Pillai Sunday said yoga guru Baba Ramdev was being taken to his ashram in Haridwar after police in a midnight action quelled his mass hunger strike and dispersed thousands of his followers.

“He is being taken to his ashram in Hardwar. He will be there by lunch time,” Pillai told IANS.

He dismissed the claim by Ramdev’s supporters that the yoga guru was arrested.

He was detained for a while and later escorted out of Delhi, Pillai said.

Qatar bans vegetable imports fearing E. coli infection

Doha, June 05: Qatar has banned the import of all vegetables from Germany and Spain due to an outbreak of a highly virulent strain of E. coli bacteria that has so far led to the death of at least 19 people, state-run QNA news agency reported.

The Qatari Supreme Council of Health decided to impose a temporary ban on fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce imported from Spain and Germany.

The council said it would not hesitate to ban vegetables from all European countries if necessary.

New Delhi, June 05: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday termed as “undemocratic” the police action to break up the anti-corruption hunger strike launched by Baba Ramdev and thousands of his supporters here.

“It is an attack on democracy. It reminds me of 1975 when the government became dictatorial. This is just like the emergency. This is undemocratic,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Javadekar was reacting to police forcibly removing Ramdev and his supporters from the sprawling Ramlila Ground a little after Saturday midnight.

Baba asks followers to agitate against police ”brutality”

New Delhi, Jun 05: Baba Ramdev asked his followers to mount a countrywide peaceful agitation to protest the sudden midnight police “brutality” at the Ramlila Maidan but kept on appealing them not to retaliate violently, a close aide of the yoga guru said today.

“While leaving the Ramlila Maidan, he told us to organise peaceful protest through out the country against the police brutality. He asked us to question why innocent people were beaten up at 1 am in the night,” Swami Sampurunand, second in command in Patanjali Yogpeeth, told PTI.

Ramdev dares government to arrest him with warrant

New Delhi, May 05: Baba Ramdev, whose indefinite fast was ended abruptly by Delhi Police in a mid-night swoop, today challenged the government to arrest him with a proper warrant and condemned the “excesses” on his followers.

Speaking to a TV channel from an undisclosed location, he termed the police operation at Ramlila Maidan, venue of his agitation, as unfortunate.

Ramdev said that “they (he and his followers) have not committed any sin. So why is it that they were subjected to such brutality.” He also claimed that no police officer has spoken to him so far.
