Israel kills 2 in Syrian march at Golan

Israel, June 05: Israeli forces have killed two people and injured five more when hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters marched from Syria towards Golan Heights at the country’s border with Israel, a Syrian TV report says.

The protesters flocked to Golan border on “Naksa Day” to mark the 44th anniversary of the beginning of Israel’s 1967 Six-Day War against Arabs, Reuters reported on Sunday.

Thousands of Israeli security forces were also on high alert on Naksa Day, fearing possible unrest.

CPI-M deplores police action against Ramdev

New Delhi, June 05: CPI(M) today termed the police action at the protest site of Baba Ramdev as “deplorable and shortsighted”, but found fault with the yoga guru for making the issue of black money “farcical” by entering into a secret agreement with government.

The party Politburo said there was no law and order issue involved here and the police action was “unwarranted”.

Programme at Ravindra Bharti conference hall

Kiran Keshari to be the BJP candidate for Purnia by-poll

Patna, June 05: The BJP has nominated slain MLA Raj Kishore Keshari”s wife Kiran as its candidate for the by-poll to Purnia Assembly seat slated for June 25.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari has declared Kiran Keshari as the official candidate, Rajiv Ranjan, BJP joint media in-charge for Bihar said in a release.

The Purnia Assembly seat fell vacant following the death of BJP MLA Raj Kishore Keshari who was fatally stabbed by a teacher, Rupam Pathak, at his residence in Purnia town on January 4.

Shameful chapter in Indian democracy

New Delhi, June 05: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley Sunday described the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s anti-graft fast as “a shameful chapter in the history of Indian democracy”.

“What happened last (Saturday) night at the Ramlila Ground is a shameful chapter in the history of Indian democracy. It was a barbaric act by the police against citizens who were protesting peacefully against corruption and black money,” said Jaitley, the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Ramdev banned from entering Delhi for 15 days

New Delhi, June 05: After cracking down on Baba Ramdev’s agitation, police today banned him from entering Delhi for the next 15 days and justified its action saying the organisers did not restrict themselves to a yoga camp as orginally permitted but resorted to a political agitation and made provocative speeches.

Top government sources said Ramdev has been banned from entering Delhi for the next 15 days as police flew him to Dehradun in a special plane accompanied by two policemen following the action at his protest site at Ramlila Maidan.

Women personnel come to senior police official’s rescue

New Delhi, Jun 05: A senior police personnel today became the target of enraged women supporters of Baba Ramdev, who was detained from Ramlila Maidan here, when they heckled him but he was saved by junior women personnel.

The supporters, numbering around 20, were guarding Ramdev from police detention but was outmanouvererd by police personnel and were escorted out along with Swami Swarupanand when the incident took place.

The agitated women first hurled abuses at several top officials outside the Maidan and then they tried to attack the officials challenging to touch them.

India has no confirmation about Ilyas Kashmiri’s killing

New Delhi, June 05: India has no confirmation that top al Qaeda linked militant, Ilyas Kashmiri, a key planner behind the Mumbai terror attacks, was killed in a targeted US drone strike in Pakistan.

Government sources said New Delhi has contacted several friendly countries asking about the authenticity of the reports which suggested that Kashmiri, a key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and wanted in India for his role in the terror acts, was killed.

Fast hasn’t ended, they wanted to kill me: Ramdev

Haridwar, June 05: A visibly emotional Baba Ramdev Sunday accused the central government of betraying him and trying to kill him. Upon reaching his ashram in this pilgrim city Sunday after being evicted from Delhi, he also insisted that his fast against corruption had not ended.

“They wanted to kidnap me and kill me or send me somewhere,” a soar throated and at times teary eyed Baba Ramdev said at a press conference in Hardwar.

NATO airstrikes rock Tripoli again

Tripoli, June 05: Tripoli and Tajura, a suburb east of the Libyan capital, saw six powerful explosions on Saturday afternoon and early Sunday as NATO warplanes have been heard flying over the area at the time of the blasts, Reuters reported.

NATO aircraft have been striking government targets since March 2011 as part of the UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which imposes a no-fly zone over Libya.

The Libyan ruler has launched a military crackdown on the opposition forces since a popular uprising broke out in mid-February.

US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 05: A militant attack has killed a service member of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan.

The foreign soldier lost his life on Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported.

The military alliance did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.

The death brings to 228 the number of US-led troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to the iCasualties website.

Pakistanis protest US drone attacks

Islamabad, June 05: Pakistan’s largest religious party, the Jamaat-e-Islami, organized the sit-in demonstration in the country’s largest city, Karachi, a Press TV correspondent reported.

“The main message to the US is that they should leave this territory, they have invaded this region for the past eleven years. I can explicitly say, the misery of the people has increased,” said a representative of Jamaat-e-Islami, Syed Munawar Hassan.

He further added that the US mission in war-wrecked Afghanistan has been a complete failure.

Daughter in law of Muallim Farooq Saifuddin passes away in Makkah

Hyderabad, June 5: Mrs. Shabana Parveen daughter of Mohmmad Dawood Khan, wife of Mohammad Omer Farooq Saifuddin and daughter in law of Muallim Farooq Saifuddin died after prolonged illness of two years in Makkah Moazzama.

Funeral prayer was offered after Zohr prayer at Haram Shareef and burial was performed at Jannat ul Mualla.

Advani demands emergency session of parliament

Chennai, June 05: In his reaction to the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Sunday urged President Pratibha Patil to convene an emergency session of parliament.

“I want the president to take cognisance of the happenings in the country for the past six months and convene an emergency session of parliament,” Advani told reporters here.

“I would urge the president that she should not be a passive observer (the events).”

Ahmedabad, June 5: Calling it a “black day in history”, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Sunday blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the midnight crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

“Manmohan Singhji, the country is not ready to believe that you are not involved in this. These atrocities are going on under your rule. Police is (controlled by the) Manmohan Singh government in Delhi, not under (Delhi Chief Minister) Sheila Dikshit,” Modi said.

Action on Ramdev shows Centre has lost mental balance: Mulayam

Lucknow, June 05: Samajwadi Party today said the police action against Baba Ramdev and his supporters showed that the “central government has lost its mental balance”.

“The way in which police brutally dealt with Ramdev and his supporters, including women, shows that the UPA government is afraid of him. It”s an act against democracy… It seems that the central government has lost is mental balance,” Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters here.

Ahmedabad, June 05: Gujarat Chief Minister today alleged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was responsible for the crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his followers in New Delhi and dubbed the police action as “Ravanlila in Ramlila Ground”.

Condemning the incident as the “worst” day in the history of India, Modi said “the PM had said during the elections that he would bring back black money stashed in Swiss banks within 100 days of coming into power. But today, it is two years and nothing has happened”.

Saleh arrives in Saudi for treatment

Riyadh, June 05: Embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has left for Saudi Arabia for medical treatment after he sustained injuries in a mortar attack on his presidential compound.

The Saudi royal court said on Sunday that Saleh arrived in Saudi Arabia along with other top Yemeni officials to be treated for wounds they suffered in Friday’s rocket attack on the presidential palace, Reuters reported.

66,000 new jobs in Saudi on the way

Jeddah, June 05: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has ordered the creation of 66,000 new jobs in the public sector for graduate teachers as well as for health diploma holders.

Among the new jobs in the education sector, 39,000 are reserved for women and 13,000 for men, said a decree issued by the king approving plans for employment of jobless Saudis.

60% plus UAE employees want a new job

Dubai, June 05: Even though 2011 may not be a high growth year and a time when employers remain in command, more than half of employees in the UAE would like a new job.

According to an online poll run by Emirates 24|7, more than half of the workforce in the country has plans on looking for a new job. The survey reveals that 61 per cent of the employees in the country are looking to change their job.
