14 killed, 35 missing in China floods

Beijing, June 07: China’s official news service says rain-triggered floods have killed 14 people and left 35 missing in the country’s southwest.

News Agency said on Tuesday that the floods destroyed roads and bridges, toppled 100 homes and washed away more than 500 vehicles.

Xinhua quotes authorities in Guizhou province as saying the flooding has forced 45,000 residents to evacuate and left 3,000 others stranded.

Haridwar, June 07: Baba Ramdev has decided to continue his fast but asked his workers to break their fast and work on ground to fight against corruption. Baba Ramdev on Tuesday revealed his action plan to the media at his ashram in Haridwar.

Talking on his ongoing stride against corruption, he said, “Anna Hazare is a social activist and our leader. He was with us earlier and will remain with us. The nature of the campaign has changed. I continue my fast. I have asked my people to fight without fasting.”

Action against Ramdev internal Indian matter: US

Washington, June 07: The United States has said that it supports the right to peaceful assembly, but it considers New Delhi’s action against yoga guru Baba Ramdev as “an internal Indian issue at this point.”

“We’ve seen the various media reports about the incident. We consider it an internal Indian issue at this point,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters when asked to comment about Ramdev’s forcible removal from an anti-graft mass agitation.

New Delhi, June 07: DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran could be dropped from Cabinet in the next reshuffle for his alleged involvement in the 2G scam, according to sources. Dayanidhi Maran is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Tuesday.

Sources also say Maran is likely to be named in the FIR in the Aircel-Maxis deal.

With allegations against Maran being in the 2G scam, a political realignment in the UPA seems imminent. After A Raja and Kanimozhi, Maran is the third DMK leader to be named in the telecom row.

Bhopal, June 07: Congress General Secretary, Digvijay Singh, said today that he never had the intention of courting the controversies that he has found himself in so far.

The former Chief Minister was in the news yesterday, amid the drama of police action against Baba Ramdev’s agitation in Delhi, when he said that Ramdev was “a fraud”.

However, talking to PTI this morning, Singh said, “It is not my intention to enter into any controversy. I only speak about facts, and the truth.”

Sedition charge against Digvijay Singh

Muzaffarpur, June 07: A local court today accepted a petition seeking to register a case of sedition against Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh for allegedly describing yoga guru Ramdev as a ‘fraud’.

Chief Judicial Magistrate R C Malviya accepted the complaint filed by advocate Sudhir Ojha who sought to book Singh under sections 154(A) (sedition), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC.

Bal Thackeray urges truce with NCP

Mumbai, June 07: A week after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar attacked Bal Thackeray, the Shiv Sena chief Monday urged his activists to observe restraint and not to clashes with the NCP.

On Tuesday, Pawar stirred up a row by demanding to know Thackeray’s contribution to Maharashtra. The Sena chief retaliated, while workers from both parties clashed in different parts of the state.

“The conflict with the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) must be stopped,” Thackeray said in a statement here.

Police probe suicide by ‘Ramdev follower’

Raipur, June 07: A probe was launched Monday into a suicide by a man said to be a follower of Baba Ramdev. Police said he took the extreme step due to land-related problems, but the local media speculated he might have done so due to the police evicting the yoga guru from Delhi’s Ramlila Ground where he was protesting against graft.

Sukhuram, 60, consumed pesticide Sunday afternoon in Durg town, headquarters of Durg district, some 40 km from here. He died on way to hospital.

Syria claims ‘120 policemen killed in ambush’

Beirut, June 07: Armed men attacked Syrian security forces in a tense northern city on Monday, state television said, and 120 policemen and security forces were killed in a region where the army has carried out days of deadly assaults on protesters calling for the end of President Bashar Assad’s rule.

Communications were cut to the area around Jisr al-Shughour on Monday and the details of the attack were impossible to verify, but there have been unconfirmed reports in the past by residents and activists of Syrians fighting back against security forces.

Pak soil should not be used for terrorism:Gilani

Islamabad, June 07: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday indirectly acknowledged that the US had provided a list of five top terrorists it wanted Pakistan to take action against and said Pakistani soil should not be used for terrorism directed against any country.

“As far as the list is concerned, they (the US) have always had concerns about the (militant) leadership and commanders affiliated with al Qaeda.

“We also have concerns that Pakistani soil should not be used for terrorism,” Gilani told a news conference in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.

NATO steps up airstrikes on Libya

Tripoli, June 07: A series of NATO airstrikes have hit sites in and around the Libyan capital, targeting the military installations of the Muammar Gaddafi regime.

NATO has recently stepped up its aerial assaults on Libya and begun using French and British attack helicopters.

Fighting is also continuing on the ground between forces loyal to Gaddafi and revolutionary fighters.

On Monday, Libyan officials took a group of journalists to view the remains of a government building in Tripoli that they say was damaged in a NATO bombing run earlier in the day.
