Chavanni’ no more after June 30

Mumbai, June 29: June 30 will see the last of the Chavanni — the 25 paise coin — as legal tender and people have till the end of banking hours Wednesday to exchange these coins for currency of higher denomination from the various banks.

The Reserve Bank of India had issued a statement a couple of months back informing the public that coins of 25 paise denomination and below will cease to be legal tender post-June 30.

JUH Challenges Nanavati Panel Order in Gujarat HC

Ahmedabad, June 29: The Jamiat-Ulma-e-Hind (JUH) has challenged the order of Nanavati Commission rejecting its plea, opposing cross examination of IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, in the Gujarat High Court.

On June 22, Commission had rejected JUH application challenging the cross examination of Bhatt by the state government and others saying that it was ‘devoid of merits’.

JUH today filed a petition in the High Court demanding quashing of Commission’s order rejecting its application challenging Bhatt’s cross examination.

Stranded A.P. NRI’s on way to India

Hyderabad, June 29: NRI’s belonging to Nizamabad and Kareemanagar numbering 119 who were stranded in Bahrain for the past two years, ultimately got permission to come back to India. They have won the case in the court of Bahrain. Abdulah Naaz construction company of Bahrain had recruited 128 workers from India during 2003 and 2006 but they were not being paid the promised salaries.

7,000 porn CDs seized in Sharjah; 7 arrested

Sharjah, June 29: A gang of seven Bangladeshis have been arrested for copying and selling pornographic CDs.

Sharjah Police confiscated 7,057 such CDs from their possession, which they distributed among labourers in Ajman and Sharjah Industrial areas.

CID officials raided the residence of the gang’s leader in Sharjah Industrial Area 10 and discovered equipment including printers and copiers used in copying CDs, said Col Mohammed Rashid bin Bayat, Director of Criminal Investigation and Search Department, Sharjah Police.

Three of the gang members entered the country illegally.

Ramdev crackdown unfortunate, but had no choice: PM

New Delhi, June 29 (IANS) Stating that the police crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev was unfortunate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday told a group of editors that there was, nevertheless, no alternative.

Addressing five print editors during a media interaction here, the prime minister said the police crackdown at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground on the yoga guru and his supporters June 4 post midnight was inevitable since there were fears that there could have been problems the next day.

Auto bandh from July 4

Hyderabad, June 29: Telangana auto drivers joint action committee on Tuesday handed over a notice to state government announcing indefinite auto band from the midnight of 4th July. Joint Action Committee threatened to observe auto bandh if the government does not decide to hike auto fares and does not resolve the problems of auto drivers. A delegation of the committee headed by Mr. Amanullah Khan convenor met additional transport commissioner Mr. Srinivas and discussed the problems and handed over the strike notice.

Mufti gets bail in defamation case

Srinagar, June 29: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has got bail by a local court in a defamation case filed against her by Jammu and Kashmir Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar in 2004.

However, Magistrate, Passenger Tax court, Masrat Shaheen yesterday exempted Mehbooba from personal appearance in the case on the grounds that her presence could be a security risk.

The PDP leader appeared before the court during yesterday’s proceedings.

Mohammed John sworn in as TN Minister

Chennai, June 29: Mr A. Mohammed John was today sworn in as Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare in the first reshuffle of the month-old Ms J. Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu.

The Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, adminstered the oath of office to Mr John, who represents Ranipet constituency in the 234-member Assembly.

The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, Speaker, Mr D. Jayakumar, and the council of Ministers were present in the swearing-in ceremony.

New Delhi, June 29: Government is drafting a new law under which telecommunication companies’ license will be revoked besides inflicting harsh punishments upon them on unauthorized and illegal phone tapping. Under the law it is planned to set up DPAI to monitor and enforce compliance of all provisions and receive and investigate complaints about alleged violations of data protection rules.

Patient charred to death as ventilator catches fire

Chandigarh, June 29: In a bizarre incident a patient burned to death yesterday night when the ventilator put on him caught fire. The incident occurred here at PGI. 52 year old Ghinder Singh was admitted to PGI a month ago on complaint of liver disorder. Later he was shifted to emergency ward and last night he was put on ventilator as his condition deteriorated. Suddenly the ventilator caught fire and the patient was burned alive.

The family of the deceased have held the doctors of emergency ward responsible for the tragedy and demanded action against them.

UAE to have 140 more mosques this year

Abu Dhabi, June 29: A total of 140 new mosques will be opened across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year, an official said.

Mohammed Obeid Al Mazrouei, executive director of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments, said 11 places of worship near Abu Dhabi, eight in Bani Yas, 16 in Western Region, eight in Al Ain, 20 in Sharjah, 18 in Ajman, 15 in Fujairah, nine in Umm Al Qaiwain, 27 in Ras Al Khaimah and eight in Khor Fakkan will be opened in 2011.

The authority will also rebuild one mosque in Fujairah and nine in Ras Al Khaimah.

Cong failed to capitalize 1971 victory: Advani

New Delhi, June 29: Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Sunday accused Congress party of having failed to capitalise on the victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, saying that it resulted in Pakistan exporting “cross-border terrorism” and “religious extremism”.

He also said while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Home Minister was successful in securing the integration of all 561 princely states into the Indian Union, the country on the other hand paid an “incalculable price” for Jawaharlal Nehru’s failure to settle the Kashmir issue in India’s favour during partition.

Shah Jahan urs: Conservationists oppose free entry to Taj

Agra, June 29: Conservationists are aghast at the decision to permit unrestricted access to the Taj Mahal for three days from Tuesday for the annual urs of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, saying this goes against their campaign to reduce the human load on the 17th century monument.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to permit free entry of visitors during the urs June 28-30.

This year, ASI and tourism circles estimate that a record number of people would visit the monument during the urs.

“The number could cross 1.5 lakh,” a hotelier estimated.

Tehran, June 29: ‘Deep” underground missile silos with iron roofs, a televised launch of Iran’s Shehab-3 missiles – with a 2,000km range (and we all know what that means) – even a suitably Islamic title to the military “games”, “Great Prophet-6”, the whole shebang.
