CPI-M calls attack on Gaddafi family ‘barbarous’

New Delhi, May 01: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sunday described as “barbarous” the killing of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s youngest son and three young children in the family.

“The killing of the youngest son, Seif al-Arab, and the deaths of three young children belonging to the family in a Nato air strike in Tripoli is a barbarous act,” the party said.

“The Nato forces are targeting Gaddafi and other leaders for assassination. This exposes the real intention of the military intervention which is to effect a ‘regime change’ in Libya,” it said.

More unions join AI strike, flight ops cut to 40

New Delhi, May 01: The Air India pilots’ strike gained momentum on its fifth day on Sunday with six pilots’ union pledging support to the banned ICPA (Indian Commercial Pilots Association) which is spearheading the agitation, a news channel reported.

The national carrier increased the cut in its domestic operations to 40 from Saturday’s 30 flights. Air India regular operations involves 165 flights.

Out of 66 Air India domestic flights from Delhi, only 13 will operate Sunday while from Mumbai, out of 55 flights of the airline only 9 will operate.

MBT demands CBCID probe in barkas firing incident

Hyderabad, May 1: Strongly reacting upon the murder attempt on nephews of Mohammad bin Omer al Yafai alias Mahmood Pahalwan, MBT leaders Adam Malik advocate, Dr. Qayam Khan, Farhat Ullah Khan engineer, Saleh Ba Hamed, Amjad Ullah Khan Khalid in a joint statement lamented that chief minister didn’t even care to see the youth shot dead by the supporters of MIM.

MBT leaders demanded a transparent CBCID probe into the said incident.

The leaders strongly protested against the attack made on Mohammad Pahalwan’s nephews.

Hyderabad, May 1: Metro Rail project is expected to create 2 lakh jobs either directly or indirectly. This dream will become a reality once the project work gets started.

TTE rapes 25-yr-old in moving train

Ajmer, May 01: This 25-year-old woman has become the victim of a shameful assault. While travelling from Ajmer to Abu Road on the Ajmer-Dadar Express a 52-year-old ticket checker, DD Mishra, allegedly raped her in a lonely AC compartment on Friday night. The ticket collector was allegedly drunk and he got the chance to overpower the victim as she was alone and the berths around her were vacant.

Nihalani, Shabana get Raj Kapoor awards

Mumbai, May 01: Noted film director and cinematographer Govind Nihalani and veteran actress Shabana Azmi have been honoured by the Maharashtra government by the Raj Kpoor award for excellence in cinema.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan presented the prestigious Raj Kapoor lifetime achievement award for 2010-11 to Nihalani and Raj Kapoor special contribution award to Azmi, at a function here last night.

Police officer commits suicide in Uttar Pradesh

Faizabad, May 01: A police officer allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver in this Uttar Pradesh district Saturday, an official said.

Sarvesh Kumar, 32, a station house officer (SHO), shot dead himself inside his official residence in Patranga town.

“While we are yet to ascertain as to what prompted Sarvesh to take the extreme step, the ongoing investigations reveal he was depressed for the last few weeks,” Superintendent of Police Manik Chand told reporters in Faizabad, some 130 km from Lucknow.

‘Bahrain invasion to threaten Saudi Arabia’

Manama, May 01: A senior Iranian military commander says Saudi Arabia’s security will be threatened because of its invasion of Bahrain to help the crackdown on Bahraini anti-government protesters.

Mubarak’s wealth came from gas exports to Israel, arms deals: Justice Minister

Cairo, May 01: Egypt’s Justice Minister Mohammed el-Guindi has said ousted President Hosni Mubarak gathered his wealth from gas exports to Israel through a company owned by his friend, and arms deals.

He said Mubarak could face the death penalty if he is convicted of ordering the shooting of protesters during the uprisings that forced him out of power.

“Certainly, if convicted for the crime of killing protesters, it could result in the death sentence,” the Daily Mail quoted el-Guindi, as saying.

The protesters called on the French government to increase assistance to the unemployed youth and step up efforts to tackle housing shortages.

Afghan market blast kills 3, wounds 14

Kabul, May 01: A bomb has exploded in a crowded market in southeast Afghanistan, leaving at least three civilians dead and 14 others wounded, the Interior Ministry says.

According to the ministry, the incident occurred in Barmal district in Paktika province of the war-ravaged country on Sunday, when an attacker detonated his explosive vest in the market, a Press TV correspondent reported.

A local council leader is believed to be among the dead, the report added.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the Sunday attack.

Hotel fire in northeast China kills 10, injures 35

Beijing, May 01: A fire at a hotel in northeastern China killed 10 people and injured 35 others Sunday, while lightning sparked several forest fires in another part of the country, a state news agency said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the fire at a hotel in Tonghua city in Jilin province early Sunday was put out after half an hour. The report did not mention what caused the blaze.

‘Pakistan still safe haven for militants’

Islamabad, May 01: A US military report says Afghan militants continue to enjoy sanctuary in Pakistan’s border regions with Afghanistan, 10 years since the US-led invasion.

“The concern about the role of safe havens in Pakistan and the role of actors in Pakistan remains a significant challenge,” a senior defense official said at a Pentagon briefing.

According to the official, Pentagon has sent its six-monthly report to Congress on progress made in war-torn Afghanistan.

Turkish protesters back Bahrain uprising

Ankara, May 01: Turkish protesters have held a rally in the city of Istanbul to denounce the Saudi-backed military crackdown on Bahraini civilians.

The angry demonstrators, who carried placards, marched to Saudi Arabia’s consulate and chanted anti-Riyadh slogans, a Media correspondent reported on Saturday.

“Killer Saudi King, you will be held accountable for what you have done,” the demonstrators shouted as they walked towards the consulate.

MIM leader Akbar Owaisi critical

Hyderabad, May 01: The condition of Andhra Pradesh legislator and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi remained critical Sunday, a day after he was stabbed and shot at by his rivals, doctors attending on him said.

According to the medical bulletin issued by Care Hospital here, the legislator has suffered kidney failure and is on ventilator to support his respiratory function.

The doctors said they were continuing dialysis due to acute kidney failure cause by the injuries. The second intra abdominal surgery will be performed later Sunday, the bulletin said.

Gaddafi safe, son killed in NATO strike

Tripoli, May 01: Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi escaped a NATO missile strike in Tripoli on Saturday, but his youngest son and three grandchildren under the age of 12 were killed, a government spokesman said.

The strike, which came hours after Gaddafi called for a cease-fire and negotiations in what rebels called a publicity stunt, marked an escalation of international efforts to prevent the Libyan regime from regaining momentum.

Point 32 revolver and dagger used in murder attempt

Hyderabad, May 1: Point 32 revolver and a dagger were used in the assassination attempt made on Chandrayangutta MLA Mr. Akber Uddin Owaisi.

Sources told that assailants fired 4 rounds with point 32 revolver made by Indian Ordinance factory. Investigating officials seized the revolver used in the attack and sent it to forensic laboratory to obtain ballistic expert opinion.

CCS to look into attack on Akber Owaisi

Hyderabad, May 1: Commissioner Police handed over the case relating to the murder attempt on Chandrayangutta MLA Akber Uddin Owaisi to Central Crime Station (CCS) late at night.

Commissioner task force has arrested Mohammad bin Omer alYafai alias Mohammad Pahalwan and his brother Hassan Pahalwan for charges of attack.

Mohammad Pahalwan was arrested on Saturday evening from Yashodha hospital by Task force south zone team.

German May Day clashes injure 10

Bangkok, May 01: In Germany, clashes between 4,000 far-left demonstrators and the police have left 10 officers injured on the eve of May Day celebrations.

On Saturday, demonstrators in the German northern city of Hamburg threw stones and paint bombs at police officers and set one car and several waste containers on fire, AFP reported.

Police used water cannons to disperse the crowds, the report added.

Last year, five policemen and a firefighter were injured in clashes in the German city of Hamburg.

AIEEE question papers leaked in UP, test postponed

New Delhi, May 01: Question papers of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) were leaked in Uttar Pradesh today forcing the CBSE to postpone the test by a few hours.

Immediately after the question papers were leaked, the CBSE postponed the two exams which were scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM today, a senior HRD ministry official said here.

“The exams for the 1st paper which was scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM will now begin at 12:00 PM. The second paper which was to begin at 02:00 PM will now start at 7:00 PM,” the official said.

Brides resort to RTI for verifying grooms

Meerut, May 01: In addition to seeking government documents and data, the Right To Information (RTI) Act is also being used for altogether a different purpose — to know whether a prospective groom has any criminal record.

In a somewhat novel use of the RTI Act, brides’ parents have started filing applications to verify whether their would-be son-in-law figures in police records in any criminal case.

This increasing trend is reflected in the number of such RTI applications, addressed to the Meerut police, as they have received around 400 queries till now.
