Andhra population at 84.6 million, up 11 percent

Hyderabad, April 01: The population of Andhra Pradesh has gone up by 8.4 million during the last decade to touch 84.6 million, according to provisional results of the latest census released Thursday.

The population of the fifth most populous state in India grew by 11.1 percent over the last census. However, the decadal growth rate has come down from 14.59 percent in 1991-2001 to 11.1 percent in 2001-11.

According to the 15th census, the state’s population is 84,665,533 – 42,509,881 men and 42,155,652 women. There are 992 females for every 1,000 males.

DEWA office gets 16 more counters

Dubai, April 01: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) has assured its customers of faster and convenient services with the authority adding 16 more counters to its Customer Service Section at its main office after the recent renovation.

“The expansion has added 16 new counters designed to meet the various requirements of DEWA’s customer database,” MD & CEO of DEWA, Saeed Al Tayer said in a press statement.

11 Hawksbill sea turtles released to habitat

Dubai, April 01: Hawksbill sea turtles are a critically endangered species, often hunted and eaten illegally in many countries. However, when 11 malnourished Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) recently reached Dubai shores during migration, they were rescued, rehabilitated and released to their habitat, thanks to Dubai Municipality (DM) officials.

Al Mirfa gets 2.5km walkway

Abu Dhabi, April 01: The Western Region Municipality inaugurated a 2.5-kilometre long walkway for the residents of Al Mirfa. The walkway was inaugurated by Abdullah Mohair Al Ketbi, undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region.

The project consists of main walkways of 2.4 metres width and corridors of 1.2 metres. The walking track is lined with local palm and ghaf trees on either side and overlooks the sea.

‘Motorist talking on phone same as drunken driver’

Abu Dhabi, April 01: Motorists who talk on their mobile phone while driving have diminished capacity similar to that of a drunken driver, said Professor Hassan Al Yahmedi of the Tunisian Association for the Prevention of Road Accidents.

“When a driver is using the mobile (phone), this affects his ability to concentrate, similar to the one under the influence of alcohol. He cannot concentrate fully,” he stated.

Mobile phone usage also impairs his ability to gauge his vehicle’s distance with others and becomes unaware of his speed.

Visitors rake in fun at Al Gharbia water fest

Abu Dhabi, April 01: Fun and competition in the water, sky and on land have been mesmerising visitors at Al Gharbia Water Sport Festival, which concludes tomorrow.

The festival saw a debut of rowing-while-standing competition in addition to training sessions on kite surfing and kayaking. Traditional Souq activities, popular competitions and draws continued on the sidelines of the festival.

New Delhi, April 01: Hindu right-wing activist Swami Aseemanand, an accused in several terror cases, has moved a court seeking to withdraw his application to turn a witness in the Ajmer Dargah blast case even as the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad on Friday said it is planning to file a chargesheet against him on April 8.

More people flee Libya amid clashes

Tripoli, April 01: “A month after the start of the conflict, the number of displaced people fleeing the violence is again on the increase at the border between Libya and Tunisia,” Action Against Hunger (ACF) said in a statement on Thursday.

“Today 9,000 people are living in the camp at Choucha,” compared with hardly 3,000 last week, ACF said.

More than 100,000 people — most of them migrant workers — have crossed the border since February.

This is while the latest US-led airstrikes targeting the Libyan capital city of Tripoli have reportedly killed at least 40 civilians.

India ponders new law after book questions Gandhi’s sex life

New Delhi, April 01: The authorities in India are considering making it a criminal offence to insult Mahatma Gandhi after a new biography sparked fresh speculation about his sexual preferences and suggested he once made racist comments.

The Minister of Law and Justice, Moodbidri Veerappa Moily, told reporters yesterday that he was reviewing legislation in order to protect the reputation of a man considered a national icon. “Mahatma Gandhi is revered by millions, not just in India but across the world,” he said.

Unified food safety norms for schools

Dubai, April 01: A federal legislation that will make it obligatory for schools to follow unified canteen and food safety guidelines is being readied, said officials adding that the law would help reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy eating habits in schools.

The law, which officials say should be in place within a year or so, will make it compulsory for school canteens and its related food industry to strictly adhere to school guidelines that are currently being updated by health authorities and municipalities from the entire UAE.

Brazil to test radiation levels in food from Japan

Brasilia, April 1: Brazil will test food imported from Japan for radiation contamination, a media report said.

The Brazilian official news agency reported Thursday that the aim is to prevent the entry of products that may have been exposed to radiation after the leak of radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The nuclear plant was damaged in an earthquake followed by a massive tsunami March 11.

Supervisors from National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will collect food samples and send them to laboratories located in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Xinhua reported.

Washington, April 01: US intelligence operatives had been on the battlefields in Libya before President Barack Obama signed an order allowing covert assistance to the opposition forces, officials say.

With the battles in Libya taking on the theme of a shadow intelligence war, two US officials have stated that American Special Forces and CIA operational teams were dispatched to the conflict-torn Libya to make contacts with anti-regime forces and to organize and train them, Reuters reported on Thursday.

Hyderabad, April 01: The census figures for 2011 which were released on Thursday showed that Nizamabad retained its top position with regard to the sex ratio in the State with 1,038 females for every 1,000 males. In 2001, the sex ratio in the district was 1,017.

Victory rallies turn violent

Hyderabad, April 01: Processions taken out after India’s victory over Pakistan in the World Cup cricket semi-final match turned violent when two groups clashed in parts of Karimnagar late on Wednesday night. The clashes spilled over to Thursday afternoon.

People from various walks of life took out processions and vehicle rallies from Telangana Chowk to the Rajiv Chowk in the town on Wednesday night soon after India’s win. As soon as they reached Rajiv Chowk, some miscreants hurled stones at the gathering causing injuries to the people and some police personnel.
