Mumbai, April 01: To help activists gain clarity on the issue of fatwas, city-based Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) organised a day-long seminar on ‘Fatwa: Its relevance and implications in today’s context’ at Goregaon’s St. Pius College. Around 20 women from the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) and Hukook- e-Niswan, a women’s organisation, attended the seminar.

Mumbai, April 01: Attacking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for inviting his Pakistani counterpart to the Cricket World Cup semi-final match between India and Pakistan, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray today asked if the ‘special offer of cricket diplomacy’ was also applicable to Sri Lanka.

Terming as ‘foolish’ Singh’s cricket diplomacy, Thackeray said he would like to know if the Lankan President and PM have been invited for tomorrow’s final in Mumbai.

Maruti Suzuki sales up 28% in March

New Delhi, April 01: The country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India Friday reported a 28.20 percent jump in total sales for March to 1,21,952 units from 95,123 units in the same month last year.

For the entire 2010-11 financial year, the company’s sales soared by 24.81 percent to 12,71,005 units from 10,18,365 units in the previous fiscal, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement.

In March, 2011, the national capital-based firm reported an increase of 38.85 percent in sales in the domestic market to 1,10,424 units from 79,530 units in March, 2010.

Man throttled wife to death

Hyderabad, April 1: A man killed his wife suspecting illicit relationship with step son’s friend.

Kanna resident of Nandi apartment of Netaji Nagar, Bowenpally throttled his wife M Padma (38) to death. They were married for 9 years.

Since their marriage they were living in Netaji Nagar.

Yesterday a youth named Sai Yadav arrived at Padma’s house when she was alone meanwhile Kanna also reached there. After Sai left the house Kanna sought clarification regarding the youth. They had argument over the matter Padma was assaulted by her husband later he throttled her to death.

Man held with antique idol worth Rs.3 cr

Lucknow, April 01: A man has been arrested in Mau area of Uttar Pradesh with an antique Buddha idol worth around Rs.3 crore that was stolen from Bihar a few months ago, police said Friday.

Bhola Ram was caught Thursday from Mohamdabad area, following a joint operation by the special operations group (SOG) and the district police. The idol is made of ‘ashtadhatu’, a precious eight-metal alloy.

12-year-old NY boy accused of hate crime attack on Muslim

New York, April 01: A 12-year-old schoolboy was arrested for a possible hate crime after he attacked a Muslim student and attempted to tear off her religious headscarf at school in New York, authorities said on Thursday.

Police said the boy punched and kicked the 7th-grade student and pulled at her hijab, asking her, “Are you a Muslim?”

The incident on Wednesday at the Berta A. Dreyfus School, a public school in Staten Island, left the girl with a cut lip. It was the fifth incident between the boy and the girl in recent months, police said.

EAMCET exams postponed to March 22

Hyderabad, April 01: Andhra Pradesh government today postponed the Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine Common Entrance Test (EAMCET), scheduled to be held on May 8 to May 22.

“The Election Commission made the announcement regarding bypolls to Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency and Pulivendula assembly seat on May 8. After considering all aspects, we decided to postpone the EAMCET from May 8 to 22,” a top government official told reporters here.

EAMCET is hugely popular in the state with lakhs of people taking the test.

Mohali meeting a new opening to settle disputes: Islamabad

Islamabad, April 01: Islamabad has said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s meeting with his Indian premier Manmohan Singh at Mohali was a new opening to settle outstanding disputes through talks, a media report stated Friday.

Gilani travelled to Mohali in India’s Punjab state on an invitation from Manmohan Singh to watch the India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal Wednesday. Their meeting at Mohali has been dubbed cricket diplomacy.

India beat Pakistan by 29 runs at Mohali and will now play Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai Saturday.

Hendricks terrified of losing dream job

London, April 1: Actress Christina Hendricks is terrified of losing her part in the hit show “Mad Men” because of dispute among the show bosses.

The retro drama is in trouble as the bosses at the AMC, which is behind the show, and Lionsgate Studio, which makes the series, have failed to agree on a deal to bring “Mad Men” back to the small screen.

However, Hendricks is hopeful that the two sides reach an agreement soon, reports dailystar.co.uk.

New Delhi, April 01: The V K Shunglu committee probing the CWG scam has criticised the Organising Committee (OC) for paying Rs 5.4 crore A R Rahman, the Oscar award-winning composer, for delivering a ‘dud’ opening ceremony song.

“The expenditure on A R Rahman in this case appeared to be a case of white elephant. There was no safeguard in the contract for any remedy to the OC if the expectation from the vendor was not met,” the committee says in its fifth report pertaining to the functioning of the OC headed by Suresh Kalmadi, Congress MP.

Sudanese national held for drug peddling

Hyderabad, April 1: Police arrested a Sudanese national in the city for drug peddling.

Inspector Banjara Hills Sudershan told that 10 grams of cocaine has been seized from the possession of Sudanese national named Mumtaz Awad who was most wanted by the police.

Earlier he succeeded in fleeing away from police and was roving in Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Acting upon a secret tip-off police nabbed the Sudanese national from Filmnagar on Thursday.

Police Banjara Hills are investigating into the matter.

New search begins in quake-hit Japan

Tokyo, April 01: Japanese authorities have announced that thousands of troops have begun searching for bodies of people listed as missing following the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit the country in March.

However, the aerial and maritime search operation would only be focused on the country’s north Pacific coastline, river mouths and land areas still submerged in sea water, a Japanese ground forces official said.

Russia slams arming Libyan opposition

Moscow, April 01: Russian foreign minister has voiced his country’s opposition to suggestions by the US-led alliance to supply the Libyan opposition with arms, criticizing Western military operations in the country.

“NATO’s Secretary General, Fogh Rasmussen declared the operation in Libya was being conducted to protect the population and not to arm it, and here we completely agree with him,” said Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, after the US, France, and Italy announced readiness to supply Libyan revolutionaries with arms.

Hyderabad, April 1: Director of Census Operations, Andhra Pradesh has announced the provisional population totals for Andhra Pradesh on the basis of census 2011 according to which the total population of Andhra Pradesh is 8,46,65,533 comprising 4,25,09,881 males and 4,21,55,652 females, showing an increase of 84,55,526 persons over the 2001 census with a decadal growth rate of 11.10 percent.

Four jewellery shop staff fined
for causing burns on baby

Dubai, April 01: The Court of Misdemeanours fined two salesmen and a general manager of a jewellery shop and a jeweller of another shop Dh2,000 each for harming, unintentionally, the safety of a two-month-old Emirati boy.

The three Indians and a Pakistani were also ordered to pay Dh20,100 in civil compensation to the boy’s father.

The four men were accused of professional negligence by not taking sufficient precautions.

They had pleaded not guilty earlier.
