Woman”s body recovered from Jhelum river

Srinagar, April 01: The body of a woman who allegedly drowned two days ago was fished out from river Jhelum in north Kashmir”s Bandipora district, police said.

The body of Bisma Bano, hailing from Takanwari here, was recovered from the river near Ganyari Ajas village in Bandipora district, a police spokesman said. Bano had drowned in river Jhelum on March 30 at Takanwari, he added.

The body has been handed over to her family members and inquest proceedings under section 174 CrPC have been initiated, said the spokesman.

Kuwait Amir accepts cabinet resignation

Kuwait, April 01: Kuwait’s cabinet resigned on Thursday over regional turmoil, the country’s official news agency said, in an apparent reference to the political unrest in neighbouring Bahrain.

The state-run agency said the cabinet resigned because of “recent local developments” and the “negative aftershocks on the country’s national unity, security and stability”.

Underworld don passed away

Ahmedabad, April 01: Santokben Jadeja, underworld don in the Saurashtra region, particularly Porbandar, died in Porbandar on Thursday night after a massive heart attack.

The 62-year old Santokben, who took over the underworld after the murder of her husband, Sarman Munja, was also a member of the Assembly for one term in the early Nineties. She was elected on the Janata Dal ticket from the Kutiyana constituency in Porbandar district.

Darsheel in adaptation of Midnight’s Children

Mumbai, April 01: Child artiste Darsheel Safary, who stole the hearts of the film lovers with her performance in Taare Zameen Par, has bagged another big project. He has been roped in to play the role of Saleem Sinai in Deepa Mehta’s adaptation of Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie.

American-Indian actor Satya Bhabha will play the role of the older Saleem while Safary will play the young Saleem. Sources said that Safary was in Colombo shooting for the film. He even celebrated his birthday with the cast and crew of the film.

TVS Motors closes March and fiscal with higher sales

Chennai, April 01: Two and three-wheeler maker TVS Motor Company Ltd closed March with 28 percent sales growth over the corresponding period the previous year, a company statement said. It also sold more units in this fiscal compared to the last one.

The company sold 191,208 units (186,781 two-wheelers, 4,427 three-wheelers) last month — up from 149,194 units (146,763 two-wheelers, 2,431 three-wheelers) sold in March 2010.

Mullen: Gaddafi not at breaking point

Washington, April 01: Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen says the Gaddafi military is not at the breaking point despite US-led airstrikes on Libya.

Mullen claimed that the US-led bombing campaign has reduced Libya’s military capacity by 20 to 25 percent, including almost eliminating its air power and air defenses.

“That doesn’t mean he’s about to break from a military standpoint, because that simply is not the case,” he told US lawmakers on Thursday.

10 NATO tankers damaged in Pakistan

Islamabad, April 01: At least 10 NATO oil tankers have been damaged in an attack in Pakistan’s Khyber area bordering Afghanistan, Pakistani officials have said.

The incident happened at the NATO supply vehicle hub in Landi Kotal, where the bulk of supplies destined for US-led troops in Afghanistan pass through.

“The attackers damaged 10 oil tankers with mortars and small arms fire, but there was no blaze as the tankers were empty and had returned from Afghanistan after delivering supplies,” tribal administration official Iqbal Khan Khattak told to media.

Brit woman alleges molestation in Goa

Panaji, April 01: A British woman was allegedly molested by a taxi driver at Candolim near here, police said Friday.

The incident took place yesterday when accused Umesh Dhargalkar molested her in the lobby of a hotel where she was put up in the beach village, they said.

The woman alleged that the accused tried to get friendly with her while she was taking a walk with her minor daughter in the lobby and when she did not oblige, he molested her.

The taxi driver was arrested after people gathered and handed him over to the police when the victim raised an alarm.

“I met Shanu Sharma, the casting director. She found me and asked me to give audition. I came and qualified and that’s how I became ‘Virus Diwan’,” Arjun said at the launch of Y-Films Thursday.
