“This is our way to wish good luck to the Indian cricket team. We have cut a separate cake for every player of the team. We would also organise a religious ceremony before the start of Saturday’s match,” said Manmohan Garg, CEO of the Chandigarh-based Gurukul Vidyapeeth Society.

CBI to probe Raja associate’s death

New Delhi, April 01: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the alleged suicide of Sadiq Batcha, a close associate of former telecom minister Andimuthu Raja now in jail in the 2G spectrum scam.

A Supreme Court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice A.K. Ganguly was told by CBI senior counsel K.K. Venugopal that a request for a CBI probe has been received from the Tamil Nadu government and the agency will take up the probe.

However, the CBI will probe the case only after a notification is issued by the central government.

New Delhi, April 01: Want to watch the cricket World Cup final on a big screen with family, friends and refreshments? The owners of multiplex chains across the country are readying to screen the final in 70mm when India meet Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium Saturday.

The screening is planned at about 100 screens across the country – from metros to two- and three-tier cities.

Kancheepuram, April 01: Union Minister P Chidambaram has ridiculed AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s reported remark that the Assembly polls had been announced all of a sudden instead of the anticipated date, saying elections in the country come at “predictable intervals of five years”.

“Being a democracy, elections here come only at predictable intervals of five years. There are no precipitating factors as in Tunisia and Libya, making elections uncertain or sudden. It is this well established democratic system in India that is adding luster to this country,” Chidambaram said.

ICC Bans TV Channels from Ind-Sri Lanka WC Final

Mumbai, April 01: The International Cricket Council today barred Indian television news channels from covering the World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka here tomorrow, accusing them of breaching the accreditation guidelines.

Representatives of the channels, who had come to attend the pre-match press conferences of the rival captions and ICC President Sharad Pawar were asked to stay out of the Wankhede stadium complex.

Puducherry, April 01: Taking a cue from political parties in neighbouring Tamil Nadu in offering freebies, the manifesto of the ruling Congress in Puducherry for the April 13 assembly polls has promised free mobile phones for BPL families.

The manifesto said poorer sections would find mobile phones helpful during emergency and a family whose annual income is less than Rs 75,000 would be eligible for the freebie.

MLA who quit TDP, demands early acceptance of his resignation

Hyderabad, April 01: TDP rebel MLA Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy, who quit from his post and the party, today held a protest in the Assembly premises here demanding that his resignation as an MLA be accepted immediately.

Accompanied by MLAs and TRS leaders, Reddy, who has already joined the party, spearheading the Telangana movement, sat on an agitation at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the House premises.

“Almost a week has passed since I submitted my resignation to the Deputy Speaker. So far it has not been accepted. I demand that my resignation be accepted immediately,” he told reporters.

New Delhi, April 01: The Supreme Court today issued notices to Price Waterhouse (PW) partner Subramani Gopalakrishnan and Satyam Computers” former auditor V S Prabhakar Gupta over a CBI plea seeking cancellation of their bail granted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan issued notices to Gopalakrishnan and Gupta seeking their replies to the CBI plea.

Govt to review Minority Welfare measures: CM

Hyderabad, April 1: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has assured to call a review meeting to assess the works undertaken for Minorities welfare in the State.

Buenos Aires, April 01:A federal court in Argentina has sentenced former officials to serve time behind bars for human rights violations committed some 35 years ago.

The Argentine court handed former Gen. Eduardo Cabanillas a life-long jail term for his role in the illegal imprisonment, torture and homicide involving 65 people held at an auto body shop that served as an operations center for eliminating political dissidents in the second half of the 70s, AP reported on Thursday.

‘Late Libyan FM collaborated with US’

Tripoli, April 01: Defected Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa has reportedly been in contact with American authorities over counterterrorism issues.

The former senior official developed a close working relationship with Washington when he was the head of Libya’s intelligence service a few years ago, former CIA official Vince Cannistraro told the prominent US radio broadcaster NPR.

On Wednesday, Koussa resigned as Libya’s foreign minister and defected to Britain as troops loyal to ruler Muammar Gaddafi and opposition forces clashed in the North African country.

Aid to US veterans’ caregivers slow

Washington, April 01: Implementation of a law signed by US President Barack Obama last year to provide aid for caregivers of US war veteran has been slow or severely limited.

Caregivers to US war veterans thus do not receive the benefits promised to them by law, a Press TV correspondent reports.

The Department of Veterans Affairs missed a January 31 deadline to kick off the so-called Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act.

The program would have provided financial assistance, healthcare and counseling to qualified veterans.

Malik’s Comment on Match-Fixing Was a Mistake: Afridi

Karachi, April 01: Pakistan ODI captain Shahid Afridi is still miffed with Interior Minister Rehman Malik for his comments on match-fixing two days before the World Cup semifinal against India and has said the statement was a mistake which should not be repeated.

Afridi criticised Malik after returning to Pakistan with the rest of the team after the 29-run loss to India in the semifinals.

Exports cross $200 bn mark in Feb, to touch $235 bn in 2010-11

New Delhi, April 01: India”s exports grew by an impressive 50 per cent in February, crossing the USD 200 billion mark during the first eleven months of 2010-11 on the back of rising demand from the US and other markets.

Exports went up by 49.7 per cent year-on-year during February to USD 23.5 billion, taking the April-February 2010-11 figure to USD 208.2 billion, an increase of 31.4 per cent over the year-ago period and past the yearly target of USD 200 billion.

Two girls die as water tank collapses

Ghazipur, April 01: Two minor girls were killed when a water tank collapsed in a primary school in Ahirauli village in Mohmadabad police circle, police said.

Ankita Yadav (8) and Manisha (9) were killed when the water tank collapsed on them yesterday, they said.

Both the girls were students of Class II.
