FIR lodged against model Poonam Pandey

Balrampur, April 02: Complying with a court order, an FIR was lodged against model Poonam Pandey, who had reportedly said she would bare all if India win the World Cup cricket final today, on the charge of obscenity.

The FIR was registered against the model at Balrampur Dehat police station after Chief Judicial Magistrate Subhash Chandra issued an order to this effect, taking suo motu cognizance of media reports about her announcement, police sources said.

The Kingfisher model said this would be her way of expressing support to Team India.

Constable dismissed after being found guilty of killing

Moga (Punjab), April 02:A Punjab Police constable was dismissed today for his involvement in the killing of an alleged poppy husk smuggler a fortnight ago, said the police.

Senior constable Mohinder Singh was found guilty of killing Gurnam Singh on the night of March 14 with the assault rifle issued in the name of some other police officials.

Moga SSP Snehdeep Sharma dismissed Singh on charges of ‘grave misconduct and negligence’.

Police said that after the killing, Singh deposited the weapon in the police station without informing about the shooting.

Two killed, 15 injured in bus mishap

Chamba (HP), April 02:Two persons were killed and 15 others injured today when a private bus fell into Saal rivulet, a tributary of Ravi river near Proutha on the
Chamba-Rajeendu road, about 22 km from here, police said.

The accident reportedly took place when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve and the bus, carrying 17 passengers, plunged into the rivulet killing two persons on the spot and injuring 15 others.

The deceased have been identified as Usuf and Sukur Patni and their bodies were handed over to their family membersafter post mortem, the police said.

Three of a family committs suicide

Ramanagara (Ktk), April 02:Three persons belonging to a family allegedly committed suicide by hanging at their house in Hunsanahalli in the district, police said here today.

They were identified as Nanjegowda (55) his wife Gowramma (50) and their 26 year-old son Shridhar, police sources told PTI today.

A suicide note left by Shridhar held Mamatha (his wife), her paernts and her brother responsible for the death of his family.

“Some family quarrel between Shridhar and his in-laws is stated to be the reason behind the extreme act”.

Election officials seize Rs 5 lakh from parked car

Madurai, April 02:The Election flying squad seized Rs five lakh cash from a car during checks at Singampunari in Sivaganga district last evening in the run up to the April 13 assembly polls.

Acting on a tip off that a car had been parked near a particular spot for a long time, the officials searched it and found the money stashed inside. the car owner did not have proper documents for the cash, they said.

Meanwhile shredded currency notes were found near a blacksmith shop at Suseendram-Akkarai in Kanyakumari district.

Mother, daughter killed in mishap

Thrissur, April 02:A woman and her eight-year-old daughter were killed and two others injured in a mishap at nearby kecheri early this morning.

The mishap occurred when a chicken-laden lorry turned turtle after the driver lost control of the vehicle, trapping the two under the vechicle, police said.

The injured, another woman and her daughter, have been hosptialised.

They were returning home after attending a temple festival, police said.

Forest dept files FIR against Murugan’s wife

Shimoga, April 02:The forest department today filed an FIR against the wife of the former Superintendent of Police of this district as the original licence of the Rs three lakh worth timber seized from his house in a recent raid was in her name, official sources said.

The FIR has been filed for illegal storage of timber under Sections 144 and 145 of the Forest Act, they said.

During the raid Lokyukta police found 126 cubic feet of timber worth stored without a licence, to be used for construction of S P Murugan’s house at his native place of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

The District Sessions Court sentenced D B Shivaprakash, talulk welfare officer of Sorab to three years simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 3,000 for demanding a bribe of Rs 1,000 from a poor parent who sought a caste
certificate for admission of his son to school in 2007.

Brit woman alleges molestation in Goa

Panaji, April 02:A British woman was allegedly molested by a taxi driver at Candolim near here, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when accused Umesh Dhargalkar molested her in the lobby of a hotel where she wasput up in the beach village, they said..

The woman alleged that the accused tried to get friendly with her while she was taking a walk with her minor daughter in the lobby and when she did not oblige, he molested her.

The taxi driver was arrested after people gathered and handed him over to the police when the victim raised an alarm.

One arrested in Monica murder case

Nagpur, April02:The city police today claimed to have made a major breakthrough in the Monica Kinrapure murder case, who was brutally stabbed to death last month and arrested a person in connection with the case.

Santosh Sonekar from Hudkeshwar in East city area has been arrested for the sensational murder that took place on March 11, they said.

Monica, hailing from Nagardhan (near Ramtek) was stabbed to death in broadday light in Nandanvan in south city area near a private engineering college.

Two killed in accident near Raisen

Raisen (MP), April 02:Two persons were killed and another was seriously injured when their car ran into a stationary tractor-trolley near Pathari Ghat early today, police said.

They were on their way to Raisen from Begumganj.

The deceased were identified as Shukrullah Khan and Sajid Ali, who died on the spot. PTI

Life sentences for seven for murder in Thane district

Thane, April 02: Seven persons, including four from the same family, have been convicted for a murder at Dahisar Mori,near Kausa Mumbra in the district, and awarded life imprisonments by Additional Sessions Judge P N Munde here.

Three other accused who were allegedly involved in the attack on the victim, Arjun Krishna Walilkar, are still at large.

Another accused died during the trial.

As many as 30 witnesses, including one eye-witness, were examined by the prosecution.

Govt submits “confidential” info in Haren Pandya case to HC

Ahmedabad, April 02:The State government today submitted a document in a sealed cover to Gujarat High Court, claiming that it contained “confidential” information aboutthe 2003 Haren Pandya murder case, in which 12 persons wereconvicted four years ago.

The document was submitted to the division bench ofJustices R R Tripathi and P P Bhatt (which is hearing appeals by those convicted in the murder case) by the Additional Advocate General, Tushar Mehta.

Mehta said the document was a new development in connection with the case, and court could consider it while hearing the appeals.

Gujarat riots: Former BJP minister questioned by SIT

Ahmedabad, April 02: Former BJP minister I K Jadeja was on Friday questioned for over two hours by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the 2002 Gulburg society riot case.

“I was called for further questioning by the SIT today. I have answered their questions. I cannot reveal anything further,” Jadeja, who is currently state BJP spokesperson, said after coming out of SIT office in Gandhinagar.

This is the second time after November 9, 2009 that Jadeja, who was Gujarat urban development minister in 2002, has been questioned by the SIT.

Israeli airstrike kills 3 Palestinians

Palestine, April 02: An Israeli airstrike has killed at least three Palestinians in the south of the Gaza Strip, medical staff and witnesses say.

The target was a car in the area of Khan Younis town early Saturday,

The car was travelling on a road internationally known as Route 4 between the towns of Khan Younis and Deir Bala.

The identities of the three young men killed were not immediately known as the bodies that arrived at the hospital were completely charred and beyond recognition.

Another man was seriously injured and is in critical condition, our correspondent said.

Police arrest lover for woman’s murder near Pune

Pune, April 02: The Hadapsar police have cracked a case of the murder of a 40-year-old woman, Sunita Sharad Bhandari, who was strangulated to death and buried in her house at Dangat Wasti in Sadesatra Nali, Hadapsar, on February 25.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Ajay Shinde, 35, of Panchvati, Nashik.
