Air Force Academy gets new commandant

Hyderabad, April 02: Air marshal P.R. Sharma took over as the new commandant of the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, near here, at an impressive ceremony on Friday.

He took charge from Air Vice Marshal Amit Aneja. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Assistant Chief of Integrated Defence Staff at headquarters, New Delhi. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Service Staff College, Wellington and Royal College of Defence Studies, London, he was commissioned in the IAF on February 15, 1975, in the fighter stream.

SCR creates record in freight operations

Hyderabad, April 02: The South Central Railway has created a record in freight operations for the financial year 2010-11 by loading 96.08 million tonnes, which is 10.18 million tonnes more than last year.

Last year it handled a loading of 85.9 million tonnes. The SCR also surpassed the target set for it by the Railway Board by 1.68 million tonnes, according to a press release.

Shiv Sena warns Poonam Pandey

Mumbai, April 02: Shiv Sena demanded stern action against 20-year-old model Poonam Pandey, who has said she would strip at the Wankhede Stadium here if India won the World Cup final today.

“The model has told newspapers that she would strip in the stadium, if India wins the world cup. The government has to take action to stop such things,” Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said in the Legislative Council yesterday.

“It was shocking to learn that Poonam’s parents have given her permission, as per the interviews,” Gorhe said.

Exempt Kolleru from wetlands order: Naidu

Hyderabad, April 02: Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu has requested Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh to exempt Kolleru lake from Wetland Conservation Order and reduce its boundaries from fifth-contour to third-contour to protect livelihoods of over five-lakh families.

In a letter written to the Union Minister on Thursday, Mr. Naidu sought the former’s intervention to take into account the plight of lakhs of small and marginal farmers’ and fishermen depending on the lake spread over Krishna and West Godavari districts.

NABARD ready to refinance banks

Hyderabad, April 02: With reduction in MFI lending to self-help groups (SHGs), the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is ready to provide refinance even to commercial banks to enable them fill the credit gap to SHGs.

According to P. Mohanaiah, Chief General Manager, NABARD AP Regional Office, the MFIs were financing to the tune of Rs.5,000 crore annually and the gap was estimated to be around Rs.1,000 crore.

Tricksters employing new baits to cheat people

Hyderabad, April 02: After using e-mails and text messages through mobile phones, tricksters are now directly calling up unsuspecting persons to relieve them of their money with new baits.

A Provident Fund office employee was tricked to part with Rs. 16,000 in this manner two days ago at Allwyn Colony in Kukatpally. The amount lost is less compared to Nigerian frauds reported earlier but this should be a wake-up call for people entertaining unsolicited calls offering cash prizes or offers without any justification, caution the police.

Kadapa, April 02: Clothes and books in shelves got mysteriously burnt in some houses in Uppparthivaripalle in Badvel mandal on Friday while four persons who slept in the foreyard of their houses were hurt when stones were pelted at them on Thursday night, making the villagers panicky. 8,200 HIV patients in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, April 02: Chhattisgarh has over 8,200 HIV positive patients and the situation is particularly alarming in state capital Raipur, says a health department report.

The report says out of the total 8,271 HIV cases, Raipur accounts for 4,028 cases, followed by Durg district with 1,022 cases and Bilaspur with 944.

The least affected district was the insurgency-hit tribal dominated Narayanpur district with only one patient, followed by Bijapur district with two patients.

Lamp with five kg ghee burns for India’s victory

Bhubaneswar, April 02: A lamp with five kilogram of ghee that was lit at an Orissa temple before the World Cup semifinal at Mohali continues to burn bright as devotees pray for India’s victory against Sri Lanka in the final Saturday.

In a Shiva temple in Cuttack city, 26 km from here, the lamp with five kg ghee was lit for India’s win in the Mohali semifinal against Pakistan Wednesday. Ghee or clarified butter is normally used to soak the wick in Indian temple lamps. Devotees say the lamp would be put out only after India wins the World Cup.

Karnool, April 02: TDP district president Somisetty Venkateswarlu asked the party cadres in Atmakur constituency to sever links with former constituency in-charge Buddha Rajasekhar Reddy as he quit the TDP and intended to join YSR Congress party.

Goa minister detained with $10 mn at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, April 02: Goa’s Education Minister Atanasio Monseratte was detained by the customs department at the Mumbai international airport after he was allegedly found carrying over $10 million, an official said.

Acting on a tip-off, the customs sleuths waited for Monseratte who arrived here by a domestic flight from Goa and was reportedly planning to go abroad.

Officials from the customs and other departments were questioning him for the huge amount of cash. He was also carrying Rs.2.5 million in Indian currency.
