Cricket catalysed India-Pakistan contact: Dhaka daily

Dhaka, April 02: A prominent Bangladesh daily has said cricket played “a catalytic role” in South Asia as the leaders of India and Pakistan have agreed that they could settle their disputes bilaterally.

“Their realisation that they have to solve their problems all by themselves will be welcomed everywhere,” the Daily Star said Saturday of the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistan counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani at Mohali amidst the World Cup semi-final match.

Two Indian channels banned from covering World Cup final

Mumbai, April 02:The International Cricket Council (ICC) Saturday banned two Indian television channels, Zee TV and UNI TV, from covering the World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium.

ICC media director Colin Gibson said both channels had breached media guidelines.

Journalists from 10 countries at Wankhede media box

Mumbai, April 02: The media box at the Wankhede Stadium was choc-a-bloc with journalists from 10 countries covering the Cricket World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka here Saturday.

Apart from a large number of mediapersons from the two nations in the final, a big contingent of scribes has come from Bangladesh, the co-hosts who could not make it to the knock-out stage.

“We have journalists from South Africa, Pakistan, England, New Zealand, Ireland covering the match. There are journalists from the USA also,” said an International Cricket Council official.

Indian embassy official in Pakistan goes missing; released

Even as India and Pakistan were basking in the Mohali spirit, a driver of the Pakistan High Commission was detained by Indian security agencies at Chandigarh airport, and in an apparent tit-for-tat action, an official at India’s Islamabad High Commission wentmissing the next day. The Indian official was released Friday.

While the Pakistani driver was released on Thursday, the Indian official was handed over to the Indian High Commission Friday evening.

Nepal ignores India’s cancer concerns over betel nut

Kathmandu, April 02: While pressing for trade concessions from its largest business partner India, Nepal, however, has been stolidly ignoring New Delhi’s growing health concerns with government and customs officials working in cahoots to flood India with the carcinogenic betel nut.

After the World Health Organisation said chewing the betel nut, also called the areca nut, or consuming it in other forms like pan masala, can cause oral cancer, the Indian government slapped 108 percent customs duty on the nut to discourage its import.

Jordanians continue anti-govt. protests

Jordan, April 02: Hundreds of Jordanians have turned out for an anti-government protest in the capital, defying heavy government-ordered security measures.

Some 600 youths amassed outside Amman’s city hall on Friday, calling for the ouster of the regime, constitutional reforms and trial of the officials suspected of corruption,

“The people want an elected government,” the protesters chanted.

Three troopers killed in ambush in Assam

Guwahati, April 02: Three paramilitary troopers were killed and four injured in an ambush by tribal militants Saturday in the election-bound Assam, officials said.

A police spokesman said heavily armed militants of the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) attacked a three-vehicle convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) near village Rongshuli in Karbi Anglong district, about 220 km east of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.

Gunmen kill 15 people in Mexico

Mexico, April 02: Gunmen have killed 15 people, including a ten-year-old child, in two separate attacks in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, officials say.

In one incident, nine men and one woman died in a shootout in a restaurant near a US border town, Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for Chihuahua state prosecutor, said.

The shooting occurred overnight Thursday when 16 masked men barged into El Castillo restaurant, in El Paso, Texas, opening fire randomly on the crowd having their dinner.

Hamas warns Israel of airstrike outcome

Palestine, April 02: The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has warned Israel of consequences of its airstrike on south of the Gaza Strip that killed at least three Palestinians.

In a statement, Hamas identified the victims as members of its Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

The Brigades described the airstrike as a “serious escalation” and warned that Israel “will bear all the consequences,”

An Israeli airstrike early on Saturday targeted a car travelling on a road internationally known as Route 4 between the towns of Khan Younis and Deir Bala.

Israeli air strike kills three militants in Gaza

Gaza, April 02: Israeli aircraft killed three Palestinian gunmen in the southern Gaza Strip early on Saturday, medical officials and the Israeli army said.

Residents said the planes fired on a car in which the three men were travelling in the town of Khan Younis.

An Israeli military spokesman said the air strike was aimed at “a terrorist squad planning to kidnap Israelis over the upcoming Jewish holiday of Passover”.

Hamas said the three men killed were members of its group, but officials declined comment on the allegations made against them by the Israeli military.

Japan quake toll reaches 11,800

Tokyo, April 02 (IANS) The toll in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan has risen to 11,800, with 15,540 people remaining unaccounted, Xinhua quoted National Police Agency here as saying Saturday.

The magnitude 9 earthquake and ensuing tsunami devastated the northeastern region of Japan and also damaged the country’s Fukushima nuclear plant.

The search for the missing by Japan and US forces will end Sunday. Thereafter, the country will shift its focus to a daunting reconstruction effort.

Lucknow, April 02: Cricket fans here thronged theatres Saturday to watch the India-Sri Lanka final, elated that the authorities had given their nod now after having refused permission to screen the India-Pakistan semifinal on the big screen.
