President Pratibha Patil invites Indian team for tea

Mumbai, Apr 3 (UNI) President Pratibha has invited Indian cricket team for tea at Raj Bhawan here today, in the first official engagement for the team India that trounced Sri Lanka by six wickets in the World Cup final last night.

The President extended an invitation to the team India which registered a splendid six wicket victory over India, an official spokesperson said.

Dream Girl Hema Malini to pep up BJPs campaign

New Delhi, April 03: The campaign for the by-polls to three Assembly constituencies in the State is set to get glamour quotient with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to rope in the “Dream Girl” of yesteryear Hema Malini for its campaign.

A senior party functionary told that Ms. Hema Malini, who was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka on BJP ticket, will campaign in all the three constituencies of Channapatna, Bangarpet and Jagalur on April 5 and April 6. She will address public meetings in these constituencies.

Japan quake, tsunami toll tops 12,000

Moscow, April 03: The toll in the magnitude 9 quake that triggered a giant tsunami in Japan has surpassed 12,000 while nearly 15,500 were unaccounted for, the Kyodo news agency reported Sunday.

The twin disaster that hit Japan March 11 also triggered a number of explosions at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which caused radioactive leak.

Over 165,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster zone and accommodated in temporary refuge centres across the country.

The Japanese government has said the damage from the disaster could total $310 billion.

Mumbai, April 03: India’s batting strength is such that even a total of 300 would not have been enough to defend, said Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara after his team’s defeat to Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men in the final of the World Cup here last night.

“When you have such an awesome batting line-up, even 300 is not enough,” Sangakkara said.

“(Their) batting is unbelievable, best in ODI cricket, MS is very intelligent, very smart.

“Gambhir is one of the best players I have seen as a left-hander, and he had that partnership with Virat. MS knew what he had to do,” he added.

SC asks for caution on ”motivated” PILs

New Delhi, April 03: The Supreme Court has cautioned that unscrupulous elements should not be allowed to “disguise” PILs to settle personal scores and upheld the extension granted to the special officer of Tirupati temple by the Tirumala Tirupathi Devesthanam Board.

A bench of justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar in a judgement said that motivated PILs ought be dismissed “at the threshold” to prevent vested interests and busybodies from misusing judicial forums in such matters.

”Godmother” leaves behind terror legacy

New Delhi, April 03: There was a time when locals of the coastal town of Porbandar in Gujarat claimed that blood came out of taps instead of water in the house of former gangster Santokben Jadeja alias ”godmother”.

This is why some found it hard to believe that 62-year-old Santokben died an ordinary death, rather than a fatal attack on her life, as most had expected her end to be.

She died of cardiac arrest on March 31.

Collapsed foot overbridge near JLN stadium to be reconstructed

New Delhi, April 03: The Delhi government has finally decided to reconstruct the foot overbridge outside the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium which had collapsed just days before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games last October, causing a major embarrassment to the country.

“We have decided to reconstruct the foot overbridge, and the work is likely to begin soon,” a top government official told PTI.

He said the government is not going to spend any extra money and the contractor will have to bear the cost of rebuilding the bridge.

Estimates Committee to examine Antrix-Devas deal

New Delhi, April 03: A Parliamentary panel is scheduled to commence on Wednesday the examination of the Antrix-Devas deal, which was annulled by the government amid a controversy.

Officials from the Department of Space are expected to brief Parliament”s Committee on Estimates, chaired by Congress MP Francisco Sardinha, on the details of the deal under which Antrix Corporation, ISRO”s commercial arm, had agreed to lease bulk space segment in S-band on two satellites to a private firm.

Man accused of killing live-in partner acquitted

New Delhi, April 03: A man accused of murdering his live-in partner was acquitted by a city court, which said the mere relationship with the deceased does not make him guilty.

“Merely because the accused and the deceased shared a relationship, does not mean that the accused was guilty of the offence of murder,” Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar said.

The court acquitted the accused as most of the prosecution witnesses, including the slain woman”s 11-year-old son, had turned hostile.

Four dowry death accused acquitted

New Delhi, April 03: A man along with three members of his family was acquitted of charges of driving his wife to commit suicide by harassing her for dowry by a Delhi court for want of evidence.

Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar acquitted South Delhi resident Rakesh Gupta, his father, mother and brother of charges of driving Premlata to commit suicide.

Sonia celebrates India”s World Cup win with fans

New Delhi, April 03: Congress President Sonia Gandhi tonight came out on the street of Delhi and joined thousands of ecstatic fans in celebrating India”s World Cup cricket triumph.

As soon as the Sports Utility Vehicle carrying her stopped on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg near the busy ITO crossing at around 11pm, a beaming Gandhi came out of it, waved the national flag, shook hands with the fans, displayed Victory and thumbs-up signs, drawing lusty cheers from the crowd around.

Thailand flash floods leave 35 dead

Bangkok, April 03: At least 35 people have been killed after floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rains struck southern Thailand.

Victims were either swept into the rising waters or buried in mudslides as unseasonably wet weather deluged homes and washed roads and bridges away, AFP reported on Saturday.

The highest toll was reported in Nakorn Si Thammarat province, where 15 people died in floods caused by rains that have pummeled the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand since last weekend.

Karunanidhi hits out at poll panel

Chennai, April 03: Coming down heavily on the Election Commission once again, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi Saturday wondered whether it was he or the poll panel that was ruling the state.

Addressing an election rally in Vellore, around 125 km from here, he said: “Is it me who is ruling the state or the Election Commission? I do not have any complaint if everything is done as per law.”

He said: “I don’t want to comment or fight the Election Commission. If the Election Commission functions impartially nobody would complain about it.”

Bose, who watched five matches across the country before the final in Wankhede, said: “The reason you didn’t see me on tv was there were a lot of people more famous than me to focus on! That’s life, but I assure you I was THERE!” he posted in the micro-blogging site.

Mumbai, April 03: Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty found it hard to control her emotions after India won the cricket World Cup Saturday. She broke down in tears when she saw Yuvraj cry.

“I can’t control my emotions!! Yay India won. It’s a wonderful feeling. It was an emotional moment. When I saw Yuvraj (Singh) cry, I also started crying because I have experienced this myself,” Shilpa, who owns Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals, told a news channel.

“The way India played together with maturity was superb,” said the 35-year-old actress.
