Jumblatt says Hezbollah’s arms ward off Israel

Beirut, March 01: Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt said Monday Lebanon would have to either side with the Arab-Muslim axis or the Israeli-Western one after neutrality proved to be a non-existent choice in politics.

Jumblatt, who realigned fully alongside Syria and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah after withdrawing his support for caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s March 14 coalition, said Hezbollah’s weapons were a guarantee against Israeli aggression.

Hariri: Hezbollah’s weapons a national problem

Beirut, March 01: Caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri began his first day in the opposition Monday with a blistering attack on Hezbollah, saying the group’s weapons have become a national problem that was poisoning the political and cultural life in Lebanon and needed a national solution.

Hariri also accused Hezbollah of using its weapons internally in the past three years to influence political disputes in its favor, culminating recently with the ouster of Hariri’s Cabinet and the subsequent appointment of Hezbollah-backed former Prime Minister Najib Mikati to form a new government.

Turkish Premier vents anger at treatment of immigrants

Ankara, March 01: The Turkish Prime Minister yesterday issued a stinging rebuke to Germany over its treatment of Turkish immigrants.

In remarks that highlight the resentment that has built up over the European Union’s continued refusal to allow Turkey to join the club, Recep Tayyip Erdogan lambasted the Berlin Government’s attempts to integrate its 3.5 million Turkish immigrants, and said policies that encouraged them to renounce their culture and speak German were a “violation of international law”.

Berlusconi tax fraud trial resumes

Rome, March 01: Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has gone back on trial in Milan in a case alleging tax fraud involving his Mediaset business empire.

Mr Berlusconi did not appear in court.

The trial was suspended in April 2010 because of a law, now partially struck down, granting him temporary immunity.

Mr Berlusconi, (74) has denied all the allegations against him. He argues that he has been targeted as part of a left-wing campaign by Milan magistrates.

He said he is “the biggest legal defendant in the history of the universe.”

British Airways worker Rajib Karim guilty of plot to blow up plane

London, March 01: A Bangladeshi Islamic militant working for British Airways has been found guilty of plotting to blow up a plane after conspiring with radical US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

He was “committed to an extreme jihadist and religious cause” and was “determined to seek martyrdom”, jurors were told.

The Bangladeshi national, who moved with his wife and son to Newcastle in north-east England in 2006, had admitted being involved in the production of a terrorist group’s video, fundraising and volunteering for terror abroad.

EU slaps sanctions on Gaddafi regime

Cairo, March 01: The European Union has imposed an arms embargo, travel bans and other sanctions on the Libyan regime amid mounting pressure against Tripoli’s killing of protesters.

The EU approved a package of sanctions, including an arms embargo and bans on travel to the bloc, against Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi and his closest advisers on Monday, Reuters reported.

The bloc’s 27 member states also agreed to freeze the assets of Gaddafi, his family and government, and ban the sale of goods such as tear gas and anti-riot equipment that can be used against pro-democracy protesters.

UN peacekeepers attacked in I. Coast

Ivory Coast, March 01: Forces loyal to Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo have opened fire on United Nations experts probing a suspected breach of an international arms embargo.

The experts and an officer from the UN peacekeeping mission had gone to Yamoussoukro airport following reports that three MI-24 attack helicopters from Belarus had been sent to Gbagbo’s forces in breach of a UN embargo decided in 2004, a UN source told AFP.

Japan’s jobless rate unchanged in January

Tokyo, March 01: The Japanese government says the country’s jobless rate was 4.9 percent in January, unchanged from December.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate matched an average economist forecast by Kyodo news agency.

The result indicates that a corporate recovery could be starting to trickle down to the labor market. December was the first time in 10 months Japan’s unemployment rate fell below 5 percent.

The government also said Tuesday that average household spending in Japan fell 1.0 percent in January compared to a year earlier.

Wildfire sweeps acres of land in US

Texas, March 01: One child has died in an accident caused by wildfires in the US state of Texas, where the inferno has devastated 130,000 acres of land and burned scores of homes.

The fires, which broke out on Sunday at noon, destroyed more than 60 homes and caused an accident that killed a five-year old girl, CNN reported.

Forestry officials joined the local fire department to assist on dousing flames. They responded to 63 fires across 132,854 acres, mostly around Amarillo in Texas Panhandle.

No end in sight to protests in Bahrain

Manama, March 01: Mass protests in Bahrain have shown no sign of a decline after nearly two weeks as protesters are demanding the ouster of the ruling regime and parliamentarians to resign.

Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters marched out of Pearl Square in Manama on Monday towards Bahrain’s appointed chamber of parliament, Reuters reported.

They gathered outside the parliament building, demanding that all deputies resign over the government’s use of deadly force against protesters.

Protesters in Oman set supermarket ablaze

Sohar, March 01: Protesters set a supermarket ablaze and rallied at two places in this seaside town today in a third consecutive day of unrest that has included deadly clashes in the strategic Gulf nation.

Security forces sealed off main roads to Sohar, about 120 miles (200 kilometres) northwest of the capital of Muscat, in an attempt to isolate the protesters and keep crowds from swelling.Omar al-Abri, an official at the state-run Oman News Agency, said one person was confirmed dead Sunday after police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of demonstrators in Sohar.

Two policemen killed in Jharkhand landmine blast

Chatra, March 01: Two policemen were killed and three others injured in a landmine blast by suspected Maoists in Chatra district tonight, police said.The explosion occurred when a jeep carrying the policemen who were returning from patrolling drove over the landmine at Lakrai More in Tandua area.Police suspect that the Maoists had planted the explosive.

Three arrested with fake passports

Coimbatore, March 01: Three persons were arrested at the city airport while trying to board a Sharjah-bound flight on fake passports.

The police said immigration officials grew suspicious over the movements of the trio and checked their passports, which were found to contain fake names and addresses. The three, who were handed over to the police, were arrested and remanded to custody, they said.

New Delhi, March 01: Third special flight with 266 Indians on board arrived here late tonight from strife-torn Libya, Minister for Civil Aviation Vayalar Ravi said.The minister said another flight evacuating 331 more Indians from Libyan capital Tripoli will arrive in the morning.Ravi, who is also the Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, was at the terminal 2 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport to receive the Indians evacuated from the Libyan capital Tripoli.Evacuees arrived here in Airbus 330 at around 1:30 am.

UDF leaders raise charges against CM

Thiruvananthapuram, March 01: Leaders of the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala on Monday submitted a memorandum to Governor R S Gavai, alleging Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan had “violated of oath of office by interfering in judicial matters.”

In a memorandum, UDF leaders alleged Achuthanandan had written to the President in 2006, recommending the name of Justice V K Bali for appointment as Supreme Court judge, which amounted to a violation of the oath.

Gaddafi delusional: US amb. to UN

London, March 01: The US envoy to the United Nations says Libya’s embattled ruler is “delusional” and “unfit” to lead as speculations indicate Washington’s plans to invade the country.

Susan Rice made the comment at a White House press briefing on Monday after out-of-favor Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi told foreign reporters that his people loved him.

“It sounds just frankly delusional when he can talk and laugh to an American and (an) international journalist while he is slaughtering his own people,” Rice said.

Iran: West liable for ME oppression

Tehran, March 01: Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Western policies have led to atrocities by dictatorial regimes and the consequent suffering of people in the Middle East.

Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, Salehi criticized the West for its support of authoritarian rulers around the region, and urged Western countries to heed the Middle East nations’ calls for independence and basic rights, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Pro-Gaddafi forces kill 2 in E Libya

Tripoli, March 01: At least two people have been killed and another seriously injured as armed loyalists of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi open random fire on people.

The incident occurred in the city of Misrata when “pro-Gaddafi gunmen opened fire on passersby in a drive-by shooting,” AFP quoted a witness as saying on Monday.

“Two people were martyred and one was seriously wounded,” the witness added.

Fighting flared earlier in the day in Misrata, Libya’s third city which lies 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of Tripoli.

Saudi Arabia sends tanks to Bahrain

Riyadh, March 01: Saudi Arabia is sending some 30 tanks to Bahrain which were sighted late Monday along the King Fahd causeway linking the two countries, witnesses say.

Pro-democracy protests in Bahrain have shown no sign of decline after almost two weeks. The protesters are demanding the resignation of the government, constitutional reforms and the king’s abdication.

Witnesses said that the causeway was blocked as “15 tank carriers carrying two tanks each were heading towards Bahrain,” Egypt’s al-Masry al-Youm daily reported in its latest edition.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian worker

Tehran, March 01: Israeli soldiers have shot dead a Palestinian scrap collector near a town along the Gaza Strip’s northern border, Palestinian medical sources say.

The Palestinian man was gathering gravel on Monday in an area north of Beit Lahiya when an Israeli soldier fired at him, killing him on the spot, Adham Abu Selmiya, a spokesman for medical services in Gaza, told AFP.

“A Palestinian worker collecting gravel was martyred after being shot by Israeli occupation forces,” he said, adding that the victim’s body was taken to Kamal Adwan hospital in the Gaza City.

Libya’s opposition resumes oil exports

Tripoli, March 01: Libya’s opposition says that it has resumes oil exports suspended by the revolution in the country, noting that a tanker has been loaded with one million barrels of crude for China.

It will be the first cargo of crude to sail from Libya since February 19, after security forces begun a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

Rebels in the east of Libya now say they control most of the oil facilities in the world’s 12th largest oil exporter. And they have vowed to keep the oil flowing even if leader Muammar Gaddafi clings to power in the capital.

Iran unveils Qur’an carpet book

Tehran, March 01: Iranian craftsmen have unveiled the whole text of the holy Qur’an woven in carpet pages in a meeting with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Ayatollah Khamenei praised the exquisite handicraft during the Monday ceremony, describing it a great honor for the Islamic Republic.

Egypt imposes travel ban on Mubarak

Cairo, March 01: Egypt’s public prosecutor has frozen the assets of ousted president Hosni Mubarak and banned him and his family from travelling abroad while investigating accusations of fraud and corruption.

The prosecutor issued an order freezing the accounts and assets of Mubarak, his wife Suzanne, his two sons Ala and Gamal, and their wives, on Monday, a spokesman for the prosecutor said.

A Cairo criminal court has set March 5 as the date to look into the complaints that Mubarak and his family had acquired wealth through illegal means.

More US-led troops killed in Afghan war

Kabul, March 01: Separate militant attacks and bomb explosions have killed several US-led soldiers across war-ravaged Afghanistan, NATO and Afghan officials say.

The causalities come after an improvised explosive device (IED) struck a military patrol in an area of western Herat Province, a Media correspondent reported.

Officials say at least one Italian soldier was killed and four others were wounded in the powerful explosion.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack and said five Italian soldiers lost their lives in the assault.
