Ankara, March 01: Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says the Israeli regime is at the “very top of the list” when it comes to human rights violations.

“In case a list was made for countries with most violations of human rights, Israel would be on top of that list,” Anatolia news agency quoted Davutoglu as saying on Monday at Ankara’s Esenboga International Airport prior to a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Retired inspector held for harassment

Hyderabad, March 1 (Siasat News): Amberpet police has arrested a retired police inspector for allegedly harassing his wife.

According to inspector Amberpet Mr. Govardhan, 60-year-old retired cop Ghulam Ahmed Ali’s wife who had embraced Islam a few years back, had lodged a complaint for harassment.

They are the residents of Dabeerpura. After the complaint, Ghulam Ahmed Ali was arrested and during the investigation, it was revealed that the retired inspector got married five times.

Militants kill 4 US spies in Pakistan

Islamabad, March 01: Militants have killed at least four people in North Waziristan Agency in northwest Pakistan, accusing them of spying for US-led forces stationed in neighboring Afghanistan.

Officials told Media that local tribesmen recovered four bullet-riddled bodies dumped along a road in Miranshah town in North Waziristan Agency early Tuesday.

A note attached to the dead bodies said that “US spies will face the same fate,” the report added.

Iran deplores human rights exploitation

Tehran, March 01: Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has denounced the use of human rights as a pretext to achieve political ends, saying the issue should not be abused.

“We should raise the issue of human rights without paying heed to political objectives and taking sides in favor of certain countries,” IRNA quoted Salehi as telling reporters in Geneva on Monday following his address to the 16th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

‘New world order will emerge in ME’

Tehran, March 01: A new world order is going to emerge from the Middle East and North Africa through the efforts of the existing regional powers and the future generation of Arab governments, a senior Hezbollah official says.

“I believe a new regional world order is going to emerge and this is going to represent the will and determination of the people of the region, not the pro-American governments,” said the Director of Hezbollah’s Media Relations, Ibrahim Moussawi, in a Media interview.

Berlin, March 01: Germany and Turkey has crossed swords over the language spoken by the large Turkish minority in Germany as a debate over integration continued to rage in Europe’s most populous country.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan fanned the flames when he told members of Germany’s 2.5-million-strong Turkish minority that their children should learn Turkish ahead of learning German.

“Our children have to learn German, but first they must learn Turkish,” Erdogan said in a speech in the western city of Duesseldorf late Sunday.

New Zealand quake toll reaches 155

Christchurch, March 01: The toll in the devastating earthquake in New Zealand’s second largest city of Christchurch rose to 155, a media report said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the government has launched a probe into why the Canterbury Television (CTV) building collapsed in last Tuesday’s 6.3 magnitude quake where many bodies are still thought be lying buried in the ruins, the New Zealand Herald reported. Police have revised the official toll to 155.

Prime Minister John Key said Monday that an inquiry will be held to consider safety issues around the collapsed buildings.

Jharkhand: Three cops killed in landmine blast

Chatra, March 01: Maoists attacked a police patrol party and opened indiscriminate fire, leaving three policemen, including an officer, dead in Jharkhand’s Chatra district.

The Naxalite fired at the policemen when they were returning from a patrol in a jeep at Lajrai More late last night, police said Tuesday.

Two home guards and the civilian driver were injured in the attack.

Those killed included Assistant Sub-inspector Narayan Mandal, hawaldar Akhilesh Paswan and home guard Gandru, police said, adding it was not a landmine blast as initially reported.

Bhopal gas leak: SC notice to MNCs on compensation

New Delhi, March 01: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Carbide Corporation, Dow Chemicals and others on a Centre’s plea seeking enhancement of compensation to the victims of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy from Rs 750 crore to Rs 7,700 crore.

The apex court also sought replies of Mcleod Russel India, which holds 50.9 percent share in UCIL, currently known as Eveready Industries Ltd, on a curative petition filed by the Centre against the 1989 judgment and the 1991 judgment.

Day after budget, Mukherjee warns of challenges ahead

New Delhi, March 01: A day after presenting the federal budget for the next fiscal, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the country continued to face both internal and external challenges, like spiralling oil prices, and must remain ever so vigilant.

“The challenge before the government and the Reserve Bank of India has been to support the growth process without compromising on price stability,” the finance minister told the annual meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Tuesday.

“The task has not been easy, but we are making progress.”

Shiv Sena vows to beat Jaitapur N-plant supporters

Radia mediated Nano deal with Modi govt: Congress

Gandhinagar, March 01: The Congress on Monday claimed that corporate lobbyist Nira Radia had mediated the deal between Tata Motors and Gujarat government for setting up the Anon car manufacturing unit in Sanand, leading to an uproar in the state assembly.

Congress MLA from Porbander Arjun Modhvadia alleged that because of Radia’s mediation in the Nano deal, Tata could walk away with freebies worth Rs 29,000 crore.

He claimed he had documentary evidence in this regard. This caused an uproar in the house with BJP and Congress MLAs entering into a verbal duel.

CBSE Board exams for Class 12, 10 begin today

New Delhi, March 01: Over 769,929 students are appearing in the Class 12 exam of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which start Tuesday.

The Class 10 Board exams would also begin the same day. Over 1,061,566 students will appear in Class 10 exams, almost 15 percent higher than last year.

‘A total of 454,131 boys and 315,798 girls will be appear in Class 12 board exams, while the Class 10 exam would be taken by 632,726 boys and 428,840 girls,’ a CBSE official said

‘Jahan-e-Khusrau’ to be held in London in April

New Delhi, March 01: Sufi music connoisseurs in London have a reason to cheer as cultural festival ‘Jahan-e-Khusrau’ will be held there, first time outside India from April 15 to 17.

Conceptualised by poet and film director, Muzaffar Ali, the festival will also be held in Delhi from March 11 to 13 at Arab Ki Sarai, Humayun Tomb for the ninth time, ever since it started in 2001.

It will be organised by the Rumi Foundation in association with the Government of Delhi and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Taj festival a big flop, tourism operators claim

Agra, March 01: The 10-day Taj Mahotsav failed to live up to expectations, with local culture and heritage not given the pride of place, those from Agra’s tourism sector say. The authorities think differently.

The annual event, started in 1993, was held at Shilpgram, a complex 500 metres from the Taj Mahal, India’s biggest tourist draw. It ended on Sunday with a show by Bollywood singer K.K.

Representatives of Agra’s tourist industry and heritage experts blamed poor promotional efforts and shoddy planning.

Aarushi’s parents granted bail

New Delhi, March 01: A local suburban court on Monday granted temporary relief to a dentist couple accused of murdering their only daughter three years ago.

Dr Rajesh and Dr Nupur Talwar, accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of killing their teenaged daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj, in May 2008, were issued a bailable warrant by a Ghaziabad court.

The court ordered them to deposit 20,000 rupees (Dh1,623) each but refused their plea for exemption from personal appearance.

The court fixed March 22 as the next date for hearing.

Bangladesh PM bats for cricket captain

Dhaka, March 01: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has strongly defended her national team’s captain Shakib Al Hassan who lost the World Cup opening match last month after sending India to bat first.

Cricket entered the cabinet room as she dismissed criticism that Shakib, who had won the toss, should not have opted to field first.

The prime minister Monday said the decision was right.

“Who can say for sure we would have done well batting first?” she was quoted as saying by an unnamed cabinet colleague, The Daily Star said Tuesday.

Temples shut down to protest pollution in Yamuna

Gokul (Mathura), March 1 (IANS) In an unprecedented display of solidarity with the movement launched by the ascetics and Sri Krishna devotees of the Braj Mandal, temples here were shut down for two hours to protest the pollution in the river Yamuna.

In the evening Monday, thousands of locals, high priests of the Sri Krishna, Baldeo (elder brother of Krishna) and Nand Baba (father of Sri Krishna) temples joined the footmarch along the banks of the Yamuna with thousands of followers.

The markets too remained closed.

Ex-cop married to 5 women

Hyderabad, March 01: A 68-year-old retired police officer was on Monday arrested for harassing his wife. The former cop’s arrest incidentally revealed that he had married five women. The accused, Ghulam Mahmood Ali, retired as a circle inspector some eight years back.

According to police, the series of marriages started after the death of his first wife. He divorced his second wife some time after the marriage. He married a third woman and has been staying with her at Yakutpura.

HMDA land auction fetches Rs 23.37 cr

Hyderabad, March 01: The grand plans of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to raise around Rs.200 crore through auction of land and plots has not materialised, with the sale only fetching Rs.23.37 crore.

Out of 97 plots put up for auction through e-bidding, only 65 bidders came forward to purchase the plots.

But the major jolt for HMDA was no bidder came forward to bid for the Nandagiri hills open land. The HMDA was expecting to raise around Rs.100 crore from sale of the land measuring about 4.8 acres, but failed to find any willing buyer.

ICC scrutinies Australia-New Zealand WC match

Karachi, March 01: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has carried out a scrutiny of the Australia and New Zealand World Cup match played in Ahmedabad after Australian openers, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin batted slowly in the first 10 overs.

The two openers scored just 28 in 11 overs and 53 in 15 overs in a match that Australia eventually won comfortably but the slow rate of scoring in the first two overs was scrutinized by the ICC anti-corruption and security unit.

$380m yacht for African dictator’s son

Johannesburg, March 01: The son of Equatorial Guinea’s dictator of 30 years commissioned plans to build a superyacht costing $380 million, nearly three times what the country spends on health and education each year, a corruption watchdog said on Monday.

Global Witness said in a statement that German company Kusch Yachts has been asked to build the yacht, housing a cinema, restaurant , bar and swimming pool, though construction has not yet started.
