Libya revolt sends oil prices flying

Tripoli, March 03: Concerns over Libya’s oil output amid growing clashes between anti-government protesters and forces loyal to Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi have pushed oil prices up in global markets.

The price of sweet US oil for delivery in April on the New York Mercantile Exchange climbed to 102.23 dollars per barrel, up USD 2.60 on Wednesday.

Tensions in the oil-exporting nation also sent the West Texas Intermediate futures contract soaring at above 103 a barrel — the highest level since September 2008.

Egypt to hold another march of millions

Cairo, March 03: Egyptian opposition activists have called for another million-man march on Friday to pressure interim Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq to step down.

The call comes as a military tribunal has sentenced a man who took part in last Friday’s anti-government protests to 5 years in prison.

An Egyptian rights organization says the man was convicted and sentenced in an unfair trial, which only took five minutes.

Thousands of Egyptians protested in downtown Cairo last Friday, demanding that the government be purged of all remnants of ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

Obama signs bill to avert shutdown

Washington, March 03: US President Barack Obama has signed a stopgap funding measure that would keep the federal government operational for two more weeks.

The bill trims $4 billion from the current-year budget in a bid to keep budget divisions from forcing a government shutdown.

Obama called on his Republican foes in Congress to join Democrats to find common grounds despite fierce divides over spending cuts, budget deficit reduction measures and investment plans, AFP reported.

Tension prompts curfew in Iraq’s Kirkuk

Kirkuk, March 03: Iraqi authorities have imposed a temporary curfew in the city of Kirkuk to prevent planned demonstrations as tensions escalate among Kurd, Arab and Turkmen residents.

Many experts have warned that a political crisis caused by the ongoing tensions among the Iraqi minorities might lead to a civil war in the northern oil-rich city, a Media correspondent reported from Kirkuk.

N Cypriots protest austerity measures

Ankara, March 03: Thousands of people in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have staged a demonstration in Nikosia to protest austerity measures which they say Turkey has imposed on them.

As in late January, the Wednesday rally protested sharp cutbacks in the public sector, seen by the unions as being imposed by the Turkish government, which exercises considerable control over the economy in Northern Cyprus, a Media correspondent reported.

PJ Thomas’s appointment today

New Delhi, March 03: The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow on petitions challenging the appointment of former bureaucrat PJ Thomas, who is facing a corruption case in Kerala, as central vigilance commissioner (CVC).

A bench of Chief Justice SH Kapadia and Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatanter Kumar had reserved its judgment on February 10.

2 opposition figures released in Egypt

Cairo, March 03: Two senior opposition leaders in Egypt have been released following popular calls on the ruling military to extricate all political detainees.

Eng Khairat al-Shater, the deputy chairman of main opposition group Muslim Brotherhood, and the group’s executive member Hassan Malek were released on Wednesday, al-Jazeera television reported.

A military tribunal had sentenced Shater and Malek to seven and five years in jail respectively.

Dubai, March 03: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has extended its support to Bahrain’s ruler in handling the political situation there and said maitaining peace in Bahrain is essential for regional stability.

During a meeting with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Eisa Al Khalifa who is on a visit to UAE, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said his country will not spare any effort to provide all forms of support to Bahrain to help it restore stability and growth.

Three of a family run over by train

Kolkata, March 03: Three members of a family were mowed down by an express train in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district Wednesday, a railway official said.

“The victims Kanaklata Giri, 60, her son Gautam Giri, 30, and grandson Akash Giri, 5, were walking along the Kalinagar railway bridge in the district, when the Howrah-bound Digha-Howrah Tamralipta express mowed them down,” said R.K Kulshreshta, divisional railway manager of South Eastern Railway (SER).

Woman commits suicide

New Delhi, March 02: Depressed over being separated from her husband after a marital dispute, a 30-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in south Delhi, police said Wednesday.

“Sunita’s body was discovered hanging from ceiling fan by her mother Kaushalya at her house at Bindapur Wednesday afternoon,” said a senior police officer.

While police did not recover any suicide note, they believe she was depressed due to marital dispute with husband Jag Mohan.

US worried about Libya becoming ‘giant Somalia’

Washington, March 03: A top priority for the US during the crisis in Libya is preventing the North African country from becoming another Somalia and a base for terrorism, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said.

Clinton, speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday to defend the State Department’s budget, noted that many Al Qaeda activists detained in Afghanistan and Iraq “came from Libya and came from eastern Libya, which is now the so-called free area of Libya”.

No charge on money transfer to Egypt from UAE

Abu Dhabi, March 03: The United Arab Emirates branch of the Bank of Egypt has waived money transfer charges for Egyptian expatriates sending money home, it announced Wednesday.

Regional Manager of Bank of Egypt Branch in the UAE, Hassan Al Buhairi, said the move aims to support the Egyptian economy by encouraging Egyptian expatriates in the Gulf region to transfer their savings home.

Egypt, hit by high rate of unemployment and poverty, saw a mass uprising which led to the exit of president Hosni Mubarak Feb 11 after his 30-year-rule.

India condemns killing of Pakistan minister

New Delhi, March 03: India Wednesday condemned the “tragic assassination” of Pakistan’s minister for minority affairs Shahbaz Bhatti and offered condolences to the bereaved family.

“We convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people and the government of Pakistan on the tragic assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti, federal minister of minority affairs of Pakistan,” the external affairs ministery said in a statement.

Woman jumps before train with 2 daughters, all 3 killed

Lucknow, March 03: A woman committed suicide along with her two minor daughters by jumping before a train here Wednesday, police said, adding that they were yet to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step.

The woman, aged around 28 years, jumped before the Godan Express, carrying her two daughters – aged around 5 and 3 years.

“All the three died on the spot,” Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector Jitendra Singh told reporters in Chitrakoot, some 300 km from Lucknow.

Manmohan Singh to visit Jammu Friday

Srinagar, March 03: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive in this Jammu and Kashmir winter capital Friday on a day-long visit, officials said Wednesday.

In a last-minute change in the programme, officials said that Manmohan Singh will be arriving Friday morning instead of Thursday evening.

The prime minister will address the convocation of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and inaugurate a township built for Kashmiri migrants during his visit.

US-led forces admit to Afghan ‘tragedy’

Washington, March 03: The commander of the US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, has admitted that a NATO airstrike has killed nine civilians in the war-torn country.

Petraeus said in a statement on Wednesday that he was “deeply sorry for the tragedy,” warning the troops responsible for the attack could face disciplinary action, Los Angeles Times reported.

The statements came after Afghan President Hamid Karzai earlier had slammed foreign forces for what he called “the daily killing of Afghan civilians.”

10 arrested for stealing, buying six tonnes of copper

New Delhi, March 02: (IANS) Five people were arrested for robbing a truck carrying six tonnes of copper and five others were held for purchasing the stolen property, police said Wednesday.

Dinesh, 27, Sandeep, 28, Mukesh Yadav, 25, Vikram, 21, Rohit Sharma, 21, hijacked a truck carrying copper in Faridabad in Haryana on the night of Feb 27-28 at gunpoint and abandoned it after looting it, a police official said.

Satpal Singh, 52, Vipin Uppal, 37, Ankur Suri, 32, Rajpal Chauhan, 40, and Vikram Bansal, 36, were arrested for buying the stolen copper, police said.

4 Iranian banks to open Iraq branches

Tehran, March 03: Head of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce says four Iranian private and government banks have applied to get permission to set up their branches in Iraqi cities.

“Four banks including Parsian, Karafarin, Keshavarzi and Post Bank are to open their branches in Iraq and they are trying to get permission from central banks of Iran and Iraq,” Fars news agency quoted Yahya Ale-Eshaq as saying on Wednesday.

Court teaches dowry-seekers a lesson

New Delhi, March 03: In a rap to people blinded by outdated traditions, the Delhi high court directed a man and his parents to do community service for a year and teach blind students as punishment for demanding dowry, and forcing the bride-to-be to end her life.

Justice Hima Kohli directed Amit Sharma (name changed) and his parents to teach blind students at a school once a week for an hour.

Man commits suicide in Delhi

New Delhi, March 03: An autorickshaw driver who was depressed over a marital discord with his wife committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his east Delhi house, police said Wednesday.

“The body of Tek Chand, 26, a resident of Ashok Nagar, was found hanging in his room by his neighbours Wednesday morning,” said a police officer.

“He had a bitter relation with his wife, Rekha, over his drinking alcohol. Rekha left him to stay with her parents,” said the officer.

Chand was under depression for last few months due to discord with Rekha.

Security forces kill 2 more in Yemen

Sanaa, March 03: In Yemen, two anti-government protesters have been shot dead in the southern province of Lahaj as President Ali Abdullah Saleh has come under intensified pressure to resign.

Security forces in the town of Sadr, in the province of Lahaj, shot at demonstrators and fired tear gas to disperse them resulting in the death of two protesters late Wednesday, AP quoted witnesses and medical staff as saying.

Palestinians slam ‘Holocaust lessons’

Gaza, March 03: Palestinians have strongly condemned a UN plan to teach the “Holocaust subject” as part of its human rights curriculum to Palestinian students in UN-run schools in Gaza.

Hamas said on Wednesday that it would do everything in its power to prevent children from being taught about the Holocaust in schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), a Press TV correspondent reported from Gaza.

Press TV tried to get more clarification on this matter but UNRWA officials declined comment on the issue.

Drunk husband kills wife in front of kids

New Delhi, March 03: A woman was strangled to death by her drunk husband in front of their kids here, Delhi Police said Wednesday.

“There was some petty dispute between Shikha, 30, and her husband Ranjit, 33, in Narela area of west Delhi Tuesday night,” said a senior police officer.

Police said that Ranjit strangled his wife, locked the house from outside and fled from the spot.

Neighbours said, in the morning, they heard the victim’s children crying inside the house and informed the police.
