US man wakes up to find dog ate his toes

Washington, March 03: A Diabetic US man with no feeling in his feet woke up to find his dog had eaten part of his right foot, including three toes.

The Oregon paper Roseburg News-Review reports that the 61-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed by police, was in serious condition after calling police dispatchers early on Tuesday morning.

The man told emergency responders that he fell asleep on his couch and woke up to find pieces of his foot missing.

China threatens foreign journalists, imposes new rules

Beijing, March 03: Chinese authorities are trying to impose tough new rules on foreign journalists and have threatened punishments including revocation of visas for reporters who work in public areas without permission, reports said Thursday.

The Foreign Correspondents Club of China (FCCC) said police had summoned dozens of journalists in Beijing and Shanghai after at least 16 were detained near the sites of anti-government rallies Sunday.

London, March 03: Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has found a unique way to deal with her problems – she cooks to de-stress herself.

The 24-year-old, who spent much of 2010 either in jail or rehab, has found a new beachfront sanctuary in Venice and loves to cook for friends rather than party, reports contactmusic.com.

“I love to cook. I cook every night. I cooked a butternut squash ravioli for my friends the other night, with like steamed artichoke. It’s freeing, it’s therapeutic for me,” she said.

Woman ‘sacrifices’ stepson to bear child

Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), March 03: A woman had her 12-year-old stepson killed in Uttar Pradesh after a so-called godman told her it would help her bear a son, police said Thursday.

Young Deepak Kumar was found dead with multiple gashes on his body in the fields of Ramgarh village in Saharanpur district. A piece of flesh was missing from his neck.

Police suspected it was a case ‘sacrificial killing’.

Child’s body found in oven, mum charged

Mississippi, March 03: A Mississippi mother has been arrested in the death of her three-year-old son after authorities say they found the child’s burned body in an oven.

Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson said today that police found Tristan Robinson’s body inside the electric oven at his mother’s apartment shortly after midnight.

Mr Johnson said the child had been burned, but an autopsy was ordered to determine if he died before or after being placed in the oven.

Manama gripped by pro and anti-regime protests

Manama, March 03: Large crowds of pro-government Bahrainis rallied on Thursday in Manama, shortly after anti-regime protesters staged a big gathering, on the 17th day of protests rocking the Gulf kingdom.

Supporters of the Sunni ruling Al-Khalifa dynasty gathered outside Al-Fateh mosque in Manama, waving Bahraini flags and pledging support to King Hamad. State television put their number at 300,000 demonstrators, a figure that could not be independently verified.

Two shot dead on US military bus at Frankfurt airport: Police

Frankfrut, March 03: Two people were killed on Wednesday and two seriously injured in a shooting on board a bus carrying US military personnel at Frankfurt airport, police said.

“Everything happened on board the bus,” police spokesman Juergen Linker told AFP. “The suspected gunman has been arrested. There are two dead and two seriously injured.”

The spokesman added that there was no exchange of fire on board the bus in the incident outside Terminal 2 of the airport in western Germany, and that the suspect was arrested by German police.

Gaddafi warns thousands could die

Tripoli, March 03: Libya’S Muammar Gaddafi has warned the West against intervening to support the rebellion against him, saying that would unleash a “very bloody war” in which “thousands of Libyans would die”.

Speaking live on state television, Mr Gaddafi again blamed al-Qaeda for the challenge to his 41-year iron-fisted rule, saying the objective was to control Libya’s land and oil, and promised to fight to the last man and woman.

‘Putin Palace’ sold for $350 million: Report

Moscow, March 03: A lavish holiday complex on Russia’s southern Black Sea coast that has been linked to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been sold to a wealthy investor for around $350 million, a report said Thursday.

Alexander Ponomarenko, the former owner of the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, bought the complex for a sum close to $350 million (250 million euros) through a Cyprus-based company that he controls, he told Kommersant business daily.

Robert F Kennedy assassin denied parole

Los Angeles, March 03: The assassin who killed US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy in 1968 was denied parole on Wednesday, and will have to wait another five years to make another request, officials said.

Sirhan Sirhan was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was changed in 1972 to life in prison after the death penalty as it existed at the time was ruled unconstitutional by the California Supreme Court.

His last parole hearing was in 2006, when he opted not to attend and did not send anyone to represent him.

Congress minister may quit over Telangana issue

Hyderabad, March 03: Andhra Pradesh Endowments Minister Jupally Krishna Rao is considering quitting his post over the Telangana issue, sources close to him said on Thursday.

Rao, who hails from Mahabubnagar district, would soon give the details on his plan, they said.

The development comes against the backdrop of increasing pressure on the Congress leaders to quit their posts in support of the demand for a separate Telangana state.

Hyderabad, March 03: Slogan shouting by TDP, BJP and CPI MLAs in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly forced its adjournment for half-an-hour Thursday morning.

TDP MLAs from Andhra-Rayalaseema regions rose to their feet as soon as the House began and raised slogans in support of a unified state.

To counter them, BJP and CPI, which have two and four MLAs, respectively, raised slogans in favour of Telangana. The two parties, in fact, gave notices for an adjournment motion for a discussion on the statement made by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on the statehood issue.

British press slams ‘shamed’ cricketers after Irish loss

London, March 03: England’s “shamed” cricketers came in for a slogging in the British press on Thursday after they crashed to a humiliating defeat against minnows Ireland in their World Cup match in Bangalore.

Foreign boots unwelcome in Libya

In recent days, the protests have spread from Pearl Square in central Manama and made forays into other parts of the capital, Reuters reported.

US house explodes; woman, grandson reported dead

Suffield, March 03: A house exploded into flames early on Thursday, killing a woman and her grandson in a blast that was heard miles away and leaving nothing at the site but a large crater filled with debris.

Firefighters were still dousing the smoking wreckage as the victims’ family members walked through the debris in shock. Killed in the explosion were Regina Proudfoot, 63, and her 21-year-old grandson, Robert Croft, said Portage County Sheriff David Doak.

Frankfurt Attack May Be a Terror Strike: Germany

Frankfurt, March 03: The firing at a military bus at Frankfurt airport in which two US soldiers were killed and two others wounded, may have been a terrorist attack, German security authorities have said.

Investigators of the German Federal Criminal Office have received information that the gunman, a 21-year-old man from Kosovo living in Frankfurt for many years had contacts to persons associated with radical Muslim groups, media reports said. The gunman was arrested after the incident in which two US airmen were killed and another two wounded.

Maoists kill MGNREGA activist in Latehar

Ranchi, March 03: An activist working for the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme was killed after being mercilessly beaten by a group of 12 Maoists at Jerua village in Latehar district.

The activist, Niyamat Ansari, who was stated to be a close aide of noted economist Jean Dreze, died last night after the Maoists beat him up with lathis, police sources said.

The rebels dragged him out of his residence at 7 pm and started beating him up mercilessly. He was admitted to a local hospital where he died at 10 pm, the sources said.

AP Endowments Minister resigns on Telangana issue

Hyderabad, March 03: Andhra Pradesh Endowments Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao today resigned from his post on the raging Telangana issue in the state.

The Minister had reportedly sent his resignation letter to AICC president Sonia Gandhi, sources close to the Minister said.

However, he has not forwarded the same either to Governor ESL Narasimhan or Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, official sources said.

Supreme Court order on Thomas not blow to PM: Congress

New Delhi, March 03: The ruling Congress Thursday said the Supreme Court decision to strike down the appointment of P.J. Thomas as central vigilance commissioner (CVC) was not a blow to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the party would study the order.

Two dead in Egypt prison riot

Cairo, March 03: At least two prisoners were killed and 10 wounded on Thursday when guards opened fire during a riot at a jail near the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria, a security official said.

Thousands of inmates began rioting in Damanhur prison, breaking down cell doors and attempting to escape the detention facility 150 kilometres (93 miles) north of Cairo, the official said.

“Two prisoners were killed and at least ten were wounded by gunshots,” he said.
