“The PM arrives to a wet & windy Jammu. Umbrellas seem to be order of the day,” Abdullah tweeted soon after receiving the prime minister at the airport. Manmohan Singh is here for a day’s visit.

RLD leader Ajit Singh’s kin sentenced in US

Washington, March 04: Vikramaditya Singh, son-in-law of RLD leader Ajit Singh, has been sentenced to six months of home confinement by a US court and now faces deportation after he was caught in a federal sting operation selling military grade micro wave radios to Iran.

Singh (34), a Arizona-based electronics dealer, was targeted by undercover agents of US Homeland Security in Philadelphia as a follow-up to a sting involving Iranian arms broker Amir Ardebili.

Court battle rages over mercy killing for Aruna

New Delhi, March 04: Even as the Supreme Court Wednesday reserved its verdict on a petition seeking mercy killing for Aruna Ramachandra Shanbaug, a nurse of the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai who is in coma for the past 38 years after she was raped by a staff sweeper, the hospital asked the court to reject the plea, saying its doctors alone had the right to decide her future.

Karachi, March 04: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is right in saying that the team should top the group to avoid playing its quarterfinal match in India, feels former skipper Wasim Akram.

“I agree with what Afridi and coach Waqar Younis have said that they would not like to play their quarterfinal in India,” Wasim said from Colombo.

The former fast bowling great pointed out that it would be better for Pakistan to play their quarterfinal in Sri Lanka or then in Bangladesh.

Gaddafi faces war crimes trial

Hyderabad, March 4 (Siasat News): The crime investigation department of the state police has issued a watch out notice against one Pravind Kumar J Solanki from Gujarat.

He reportedly cheated Corporation Bank, chapel Road branch in the city by encashing Rs. 27.86 lakh fraudulently by submitting demand drafts with altered payee names and amounts.

Religious police deny ties to book fair gate-crashers

Riyadh, March 04: The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), known as Religious Police in Western media and Hai’a in Saudi Arabia, denied any connection with the group that stormed the Riyadh Book Fair on Wednesday night.

Around 30 men disrupted the second day of the annual Book Fair being organised by the Saudi Ministry of Information. The event was officially inaugurated on Tuesday and opened to the public on Wednesday.

Hyderabad, March 04: On Thursday the Union of India informed the Andhra Pradesh High Court that Chapter 8 of Srikrishna Committee report could not be disclosed as it was a sensitive and privileged document. Additional Solicitor-General Vivek Tankha submitted to Justice L. Narasimha Reddy a sworn counter affidavit to this effect by the Under Secretary in the Home Ministry.

Rajya Sabha Question Hour timings changed

New Delhi, March 04: Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari on Friday announced that question hour in the Upper house would be taken up in the afternoon instead of morning from next week.

Ansari said members raise issues of concern at the expense of Question Hour and it had been decided to shift the timings.

He said 2 pm to 3 pm every day and 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm on Friday “shall be available for asking and answering of questions”. He said the new timings would come into force from March 7.

Gul: Egypt army serious on transition

Ankara, March 04: Turkey has expressed confidence that Egyptian authorities will fulfill the nation’s demands by overseeing a successful transition to democracy.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who was on a one-day trip to Cairo on Thursday, made the remark after meeting Egyptian political figures and junta members.

Gul arrived in Cairo as Egypt’s Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq resigned and a former transportion minister was picked to appoint a new government while activists demand a purge of Mubarak’s old guard from the cabinet.

New Delhi, March 04: The CBI today carried out searches at the residence of suspended Prasar Bharti CEO B S Lalli after registering a case against him and others for alleged irregularities in the award of broadcasting rights of Commonwealth Games reportedly resulting in a loss of Rs 135 crore to the exchequer.

The case was filed against Lalli, Director of Zoom Communications Wasim Dehlvi and others under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Indian Penal Code late last night, official sources said.

Vijayashanti, KCR to resign their Lok Sabha membership?

Hyderabad, March 04: Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his colleague Vijayashanti are said to be actively considering resignation from their membership of Lok Sabha on Friday if there is no response from the Central government to the demand for separate Telangana.

The two members are likely to re-enact the Thursday’s scenes in the Lok Sabha on Friday too, over the demands. The house was adjourned five times on Thursday following disruptions created by them.

Catholic priest sentenced for pedophilia

Washington, March 04: A court in Rome has sentenced a former Catholic priest to 15 years in prison for child abuse amid a wave of pedophilia cases by clergymen across Europe and the U.S.

Ruggero Conti, a former parish priest at Selva Candida on the outskirts of the Italian capital, was found guilty of abusing seven children between 1998 and 2008 when he was arrested.

Prosecutors had initially sought 18 years in prison for Conti on charges of sex acts against minors, sexual violence and incitement to prostitution of a minor.

Toronto, March 04: Without blaming the Pakistani government, Toronto-based Peter Bhatti, brother of slain Pakistan federal minister for minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, Thursday said extra security for his brother could have saved his life.

Bhatti, who was also the founder-chairman of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance, was gunned down by the Pakistan Taliban Tuesday for speaking out against blasphemy laws which mandate death for insulting Islam and are misused against minorities.

US soldier sentenced for sport killing

Washington, March 04: An American soldier charged with killing Afghan civilians and mutilating their corpses has been sentenced to 60 days hard labor.

A US military judge has found Specialist Corey Moore, 22, guilty of serious misconduct — including mutilating the corpse of a dead Afghan civilian, AFP reported.

He was also found guilty of smoking hashish and assaulting another soldier, Adam Winfield, who blew the whistle on the activities of the so-called “kill team.”

4 NATO trucks destroyed in Pakistan

Islamabad, March 04: Pakistani militants have destroyed four NATO trucks carrying war supplies to US-led forces in the neighboring Afghanistan.

A powerful bomb went off in a parking area of NATO containers in Khyber Agency in northwest pakistan on Friday morning, destroying three tankers, a Media correspondent reported.

In another incident, militants torched a NATO tanker in the Ganji area of Mastung district in southwestern province of Baluchistan late Thursday.

The container was on its way from Afghanistan and was going to Karachi when militants opened fire and set it ablaze.

Gaddafi’s son denies reports of air strikes in Tripoli

Tripoli, March 04: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has denied reports of air strikes in the capital city of Tripoli, saying “show me a single attack, one drop, one attack….”

Saif told Sky News there has been no air strike in Tripoli to intimidate anti-government protesters, and prevent them from launching an uprising.
