Militants blow up state-run schools in northwest Pak

Peshawar, March 29: Pro-Taliban militants blew up two state-run schools in northwest Pakistan on Monday though there were no reports of casualties, officials said.

The militants destroyed the Government Boys Schools at Jovakai with explosive devices early this morning, the officials said.

No one was injured in the attacks as the schools were empty when the explosive devices went off.

The total number of schools targeted by militants in the area has gone up to 30.

Hyderabad, March 29: Situation became tense in Yousuf Guda area yesterday when Law college students staged protest before the Allahabad bank for anti-Muslim remarks made by the bank manager. When the Law College students approached the Yellareddy Guda branch of Allahabad Bank to get information about their bank accounts, the assistant general manager of the bank made anti-Muslim remarks. The enraged students protested against this and demanded action against the manager.

New drug hope for lung cancer sufferers

London, March 29: Lung cancer sufferers, who have stopped responding to chemotherapy, could benefit from a new drug which is undergoing tests.

The experimental drug, known as LY2181308, aims to stop the growth of deadly tumours by blocking a protein that allows them to develop.

If the trial – being carried out at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals with teams from Oxford University and Cancer Research UK – is successful it could lead to new treatment for patients with advanced lung cancer and give them longer to live.

Gaddafis forces have been stopped

Cairo, March 29: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been “badly weakened” and his military advance against rebel forces has been halted by the international coalition, US President Barack Obama said Monday.

“We have stopped Gaddafi’s deadly advance,” Obama said in a speech designed to outline his policy on Libya and the US military’s role in the conflict.

London. March 29: Prince William has given the press the slip and has held his stag night in private, palace officials confirmed Monday.

The 28-year-old, who marries long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, reportedly marked the end of his life as a single man with a low-key party at a rural retreat at the weekend.

“It has taken place. We are not saying when, or where,” a spokeswoman for the prince told the media.

TDP, Congress MLAs clash over YSR insult

Hyderabad, March 29: Ruling Congress and main opposition Telugu Desam MLAs came to near blows inside the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Monday after Agriculture Minister YS Vivekananda heckled two TDP MLAs as they held a placard that denigrated supporters of late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Vivekananda, brother of the late chief minister, rushed towards Telugu Desam Legislature Party deputy leader Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu and tore away the placard that read “YSR dongala mutha” (YSR’s gang of thieves) and also heckled another MLA Ch Prabhakar who was sitting there.

Personal incomes, spending rise in the US

Washington, March 29: Personal incomes in the US rose 0.3 percent last month and spending climbed 0.7 percent, authorities said.

Consumer spending represents nearly 70 percent of US gross domestic product and February was the eighth consecutive month to see an increase.

The personal savings rate fell last month to 5.8 percent, compared with 6.1 percent in January.

The commerce department’s broadest gauge of prices increased 0.4 percent last month and 0.3 percent in January, while “core inflation” – excluding food and energy – advanced 0.2 percent in February.

Lovers end life as parents oppose marriage

Hyderabad, March 29: Two lovers, allegedly depressed after their elders refused to get them married, ended their lives in a suicide pact near Keesara yesterday.

The victims, S Hemalatha (17) and G Bhaskar (18), were residents of Narsampally hamlet in Yadgarpally village of Keesara mandal. They fell in love while studying SSC and joined intermediate in two different colleges in the city.

On coming to know of their love affair, Hemalatha’s parents objected to it and forced the girl to stop her studies.

No Signs of Ceasefire in Libya: UN Chief

United Nations, March 29: Before heading to London to attend a conference on Libya, UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said that there were no signs of a ceasefire in the North African country where Muammar Gaddafi’s forces are battling rebels.

“Despite repeated claims by the Libyan authorities, we continue to see no evidence of a cease-fire, nor any steps by the Libyan authorities to fulfill their obligations under resolutions 1970 and 1973,” Ban told the General Assembly yesterday.

US worried about terrorist attacks against India

Washington, March 29: Worried about terrorist attacks against India, the United States has been “very encouraged” by the anti-terrorism cooperation between Bangladesh and India to thwart plans of groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba to “inflitrate into India”, a senior US official has said.

“We’re worried about terrorist attacks against India, in particular right now,” Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Robert Blake told Bangladesh’s ATN News in Dhaka last week, according to a State Department transcript.

Israeli spy suspect detained in Lebanon

Beirut, March 29: Lebanese security forces say they have arrested a man on suspicion of espionage for Israel in line with Beirut’s resolve to counter espionage activities.

The unnamed suspect, detained on March 21, has been charged with closely monitoring the situation in Lebanon and providing information about different sects’ relations and views on Hezbollah resistance movement to Israel between 2006 and early 2011, Naharnet reported on Monday.

Stolen Picasso painting found in Turkey

Ankara, March 29: Turkish police have found a painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso which was stolen from the Kuwait National Museum during the Persian Gulf War.

According to Turkish newspaper Radikal, the $10-million artwork was found after a month of police operations in the western town of Balikesir.

Police say the canvas was stolen in 1991 and the 41-year-old Turkish citizen who held the painting has been arrested.

Picasso was a Spanish painter, draughtsman and sculptor, best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work.

Egypt braces for million-man rally

Cairo, March 29: Egyptians have prepared for another million-man rally to “save the revolution” as officials loyal to the ousted regime of President Hosni Mubarak still hold on to power.

The January 25 coalition called on fellow citizens to participate in the demonstrations on Friday, warning that true reform only comes with the trial of the ‘corrupt’ officials of the Mubarak regime, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The anti-government protesters will also call on Egyptian officials loyal to beleaguered Mubarak to leave office immediately.

26-year-old history-sheeter stabbed to death

Mumbai, March 29: A 26-year-old history-sheeter was on Monday stabbed to death by four unidentified bike-borne persons in a broad daylight here, police said.

The police suspect the killing of Anil Naresh Amkar may be a fallout of enmity between two groups in Pratiksha Nagar area of Wadala Truck Terminus Wadala TT, central Mumbai.

Amkar had three police cases, including a murder, registered against him at the Wadala TT police station.

‘UK police brutal against protesters’

London, March 29: British campaign group South London Solidarity Federation has condemned the violent tactics used by the police to tackle the massive anti-cuts demonstrations held on Saturday.

Spokesman for the group John Green hit out at the police treatment of the London rallies as “violent without any sense of proportion.”

“We have witnessed police brutally launch into demonstrators without any restraint. This is not an aberration but a continuation of their behaviour on other recent demonstrations,” Green said.

Leading girls from hell to humane society

Mumbai, March 29: In a western Mumbai suburb stands a six-storey building housing 100 girls, mostly minors, who are being educated, given vocational training and psychological counselling. One thing binds them — they have all been rescued from brothels across Maharashtra.

Members of Rescue Foundation, an NGO in Kandivli, not only arranged to rescue them but also brought them to the protective home. Now it is helping them rehabilitate, reintegrate with their families and live a life of dignity.
