Telangana employees call off non-cooperation agitation for now

Hyderabad, March 05: The government employees from Telangana have ‘temporarily’ called off their non-cooperation agitation after talks with the Andhra government ended on a positive note late tonight.

The Telangana employees, under the aegis of Joint Action Committee, had launched the non-cooperation agitation and abstained from work since February 17.

Fighting, explosions kill 49 in Libya’s rebel-held east

Cairo, March 05: Pro-Gaddafi forces were locked in a fierce battle with rebels in Libya’s east to reclaim the lost territory as the regime scrambled hard to quell fresh protests in Tripoli, amid reports that at least 49 people were killed in the fighting and explosions in a military arms depot.

Rebel-held Az Zawiyah, just 50 kms west of Tripoli, was the subject of a fierce assault by forces still loyal to 68-year-old Muammar Gaddafi.

Heavy casualties were reported there and in other key cities, including the eastern port of Ras Lanuf.

Centre should announce clear cut policy on Telangana : CPI

Hyderabad, March 05: The State Unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) today said that there was no use of conducting all-party meetings a number of times over the Telangana issue.

In a release, CPI Secretary K Narayana said without declaration of clear cut policy on Telangana by the Union Government, there was no use of such meetings.

TRS President not resigning : TRS Floor Leader

Hyderabad, March 05: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Floor Leader Etala Rajendra today said Party President K Chandrashekara Rao was not resigning from the Lok Sabha.

While denying rumours that the TRS President was going to resign from the Lok Sabha demanding separate Telangana Bill in Parliament, at the Media point in the State Assembly premises, he said Mr Rao, who was in Delhi to attend Parliament Session, was not resigning and the ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ programmes would be held as on May 10 as scheduled.

‘Pak High Commissions distributing fake Indian currency’

New Delhi, March 05: A “million intelligence inputs” reportedly point at the involvement of the Pakistan High Commissions in Dhaka and Kathmandu in distributing Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN).

According to a secret 65-page Government report cited by an Indian daily, officials in the High Commissions are also responsible for manufacturing FICN.

The Government has for the first time revealed that FICN worth Rs 16,000 crore are in “circulation”.

Homeland Security ponders fate of Tri-Valley students

Washington, March 05: The fate of hundreds of Indian students of a sham US university not implicated in the investigation of visa fraud by the closed school is under “active discussion” by US authorities.

“The focus right now is on issues regarding what happens for students who are not implicated in the ongoing investigation,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters Friday.

Chinese women now initiate majority of divorces

Beijing, March 05: Women in China are now taking the lead in filing for divorce, with 70 percent of cases initiated by wives in 2010.

Incompatibility, extramarital affairs and domestic violence were the major causes behind the breakups, China Daily reported.

The People’s Court of Shunyi district, in northeast Beijing, released statistics based on the approximately 800 divorce cases it handled in 2010.

Wi-Fi users in Pune not safety-savvy

Pune, March 05: With wi-fi (wireless Internet) users not paying heed to the appeals to secure their connections, the cyber crime cell of the city police have now decided to crack the whip. They are planning to issue a notice under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code to all Wi-Fi users to secure their connections.

It would lodge complaints under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, against those who fail to adhere to the notice sent by the police.

Yemen rallies swell; 4 killed

Sanaa, March 05: President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Friday rejected an opposition plan for him to transfer power by the end of 2011 as crowds demonstrating against his rule swelled into hundreds of thousands.

“The president rejected the proposal and is holding on to his previous offer,” the opposition’s rotating president Mohammed Al-Mutawakil said on Friday.

Terrorist lectures Canadian court before he gets life term

Toronto, March 05: A convicted terrorist lectured a Canadian court here Friday about his extremist views before he was jailed for life for his role in the al-Qaeda-inspired Toronto-18 plot unearthed five years ago.

The plot was uncovered with the arrest of 18 Muslim youths from the Toronto area in June 2006. The plotters had planned to storm the Canadian parliament, take Prime Minister Stephen Harper hostage and behead him.

Indian American jewellers found guilty of movie-style robbery

New York, March 05: Two Indian-American jewellers have been found guilty of staging a fake heist straight out of the movie “Snatch” to get a $7 million insurance payout.

The phony robbery was a “desperate gamble” by jewellers Atul Shah and Mahaveer Kankariyam that went wrong, a New York judge ruled Friday finding each man guilty on all seven counts, New York Daily News reported.

Shah, 49, and Kankariya, 44, face up to 15 years prison when sentenced in the New Year’s Eve, 2008 heist.

Iraqi premier warns against violence amid protests

Baghdad, March 05: Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki warned against the return of violence and sectarianism Friday as thousands held peaceful protests demanding better services and an end to corruption.

After meeting with a number of security chiefs, al-Maliki stressed the need to maintain and protect the political process from “enemies” and not allow the return of sectarianism, violence and militias, Alsumaria website reported.

Al-Maliki also said that people had the right to express their opinion and demonstrate. But he warned against violating the law.

Court asks AIIMS to admit doctor to masters course

New Delhi, March 05: The Delhi High Court Friday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to allot a seat in a masters course to an MBBS doctor who denied this last year due to a change in the prospectus just before the counselling date.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjeev Khanna said: “The AIIMS authorities will have to allot a seat to Varun Aggarwal in PG course in the general category either in surgery, gynaecology or orthopaedics in the next academic session in July 2011.”

No major surprises in Sonia’s new team of office-bearers

New Delhi, March 05: Congress president Sonia Gandhi retained most of the senior leaders in her team of office bearers unveiled Friday, with the long-awaited announcement not springing any major surprises.

The exercise, done keeping in view intra-party equations in the states and caste and regional balances, has seen senior state leaders, including Birender Singh and Madhusudan Mistry, finding a place in the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s top decision making body.

Though six leaders have been dropped from the CWC, most senior leaders have retained their places.

Omani demonstrators demand reforms, pay increases

Sohar(Oman), March 05: Around 500 young men staged a demonstration Friday in the city of Sohar to demand political reforms by the Oman government and an increase in minimum wages.

Security forces stayed in the background, reports said, after last week’s violent clashes resulted in a number of deaths and injured.

Friday’s demonstrators demanded punishment for corrupt government members and a cabinet reshuffle, while also calling for greater participation by citizens in the sultanate’s decision-making.

CWC meeting to condole the death of Arjun Singh

New Delhi, March 05: A meeting of the Congress Working Committee is being held here this morning to condole the death of veteran party leader Arjun Singh.

Singh (81), who was admitted to AIIMS some days ago with chest pain and neuro problems, yesterday died of a heart attack.

Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and several other leaders are expected to be present at the meeting to pay homage to the departed leader.

The mortal remains of Singh will be consigned to flames on Sunday at his native village Churhat in Madhya Pradesh, his younger son and Congress MLA Ajay Singh said.

Four held for admission scam in M S University

Vadodara, March 05: Four persons, including a member of a key body of the Maharaja Sayairao University (MSU), were arrested yesterday in connection with an admission scam in the Faculty of Technology and Engineering of the varsity, police said.

Kamlesh Mehta, a Gujarat Government nominee on the Senate, a key decision-making body of the university, is among those arrested. The others were identified as Hemant Zala, Viral Panchal and Mitesh Patel, all alleged touts, they said.

AP CM asks Telangana employees to call off agitation

Hyderabad, March 05: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy friday renewed his appeal to the Telangana employees to immediately call off their non-cooperation agitation as people were suffering badly.

“More than 50 lakh families in Telangana could not get their monthly ration from fair price shops, while 11 lakh persons could not receive social security pensions. Another 2.4 lakh retired employees, too, could not get their monthly pension because of the ongoing agitation,” he told reporters.

Shanghai residents live longest at 82 years

Shanghai, March 05: The average life span of people in Shanghai has surpassed 82 years, the longest in the country, officials said.

China Daily reported that by the end of 2010, the average life span of the city’s residents was 82.13 years, eclipsing the figure of 81.73 set in 2009, says the annual report released by the municipal health bureau.

The average life span of Shanghai’s registered male residents was 79.82 years, up from the previous year’s 79.42, while the female life span was 84.44 years, up from 84.06.

The average life span of a Shanghai resident in 1951 was 44 years.

Interpol issues global alert on Muammar Gaddafi, 15 others

Paris, March 05: Interpol has issued a global alert against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and 15 others, including members of his family and close associates, the global police organisation said yesterday.

Interpol said it issued the Orange Notice in a bid to warn member states of the danger posed by the movement of these individuals and their assets, following a UN Security Council travel ban and asset freeze.

The move is also to assist the International criminal court investigation into alleged crimes against humanity in Libya, Interpol said in a statement.

Mexican scientists develop eco-friendly cement

Mexico City, March 05: Scientists in Mexico are developing a new type of cement that will reduce carbon-dioxide emission by up to 80 percent while the amount of energy consumed in the production process will be lowered by as much as 50 percent.

Scientists at the Research and Advanced Studies Centre – or Cinvestav – have been developing several types of cement alternatives for the past 13 years, including one with greater resistance and durability and with less environmental and economic impact, a statement said.
