President to honour IAF units on March 9

Bagdogra, March 05: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will present the President’s Standard (honour) to two units of Indian Air Force at Bagdogra IAF base, about 15 kms from Siliguri on March 9, a senior official said today.

Air Marshal and AoC-in-chief K K Nohwar told a press conference that the 44 squadron and 110 helicopter unit (HU) had the fantastic track record of bravery and operation at the hour of need.

We’ll stick to seven batsmen: Dhoni

Bangalore, March 05: Bowling might have emerged as the weak link for India in the World Cup but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said the team would still stick to seven batsmen and leave the fifth bowler’s slot to part-timers in the match against Ireland here tomorrow.

“It’s a tricky one. You should always back your strength.

At times you find that there are not enough runs, maybe 30 runs short. With Yusuf (Pathan) being part of the side, the fifth bowler’s slot can be rotated between him and Yuvraj. We will be inclined to play with seven batsmen,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh’s three-day mourning for Arjun Singh

Bhopal, March 05: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has cancelled his 52nd birthday celebrations Saturday as part of the state mourning for former chief minister Arjun Singh who died Friday.

Arjun Singh, 80, was three-time Congress chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.

He first became chief minister June 8, 1980 and remained for full term till March 10, 1985. On his second term he took oath on March 11, 1985 but remained for one day only and the Congress replaced him with Motilal Vohra.

Youth run over by Metro train

New Delhi, March 05: A train ran over a young man at the Uttam Nagar West Metro station Saturday morning when he jumped on to the tracks to get to the opposite platform, Delhi Metro said.

The victim was identified as Rahul Thapa, 25.

Thapa jumped on to the track at the elevated station in a dangerous attempt for a short cut to the other platform instead of using escalators, a Metro official said.

He did not notice that a train from Dwarka and bound for Noida was racing to the station.

1,589 British lose job every day

England, March 05: Over 1,500 British people lose their jobs every day due to the country’s £1.4trillion debt in loans and mortgages, which is more than the national output.

According to the personal debt charity Credit Action, Britain’s debt rose by £1.5billion in 2011, which caused 1,589 redundancies every day and 833,000 unemployed for a year or more. This means the country now owe more than the total national production.

104 people killed in Kashmir unrest: JK Government

Jammu, March 05: Jammu and Kashmir government today said as many as 104 civilians were killed during the unrest in Kashmir valley last summer.

During the unrest, 92 civilians, who were part of the violent mob protests, succumbed after they were injured during clashes between protestors and security forces, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also incharge for Home, said in a written reply to a question raised by nominated member Mohammad Rashid Qureshi in the state Legislative Council.

12 people also died due to law and order disturbances in the state during that period, he said.

One-month-old baby girl critically injured in fire

Hyderabad, March 05: A one-month-old baby girl and two others were critically injured after a fire broke out in a house at Malakpet.

The fire broke out when a can of petrol, which the family had stored to sell, accidently spilled on a burning lamp, police said.

According to police, the mishap took place in the house of 48-year Champa Pawar, who also runs a kirana store in her house at Shalivahana Nagar in Malakpet.

Fire victims to get up to Rs.5,000

Mumbai, March 05: Victims of a fire that ravaged a slum here will get up to Rs.5,000 as compensation.

Mumbai Suburban District Collector Nirmal Deshmukh told IANS that each person who suffered burns would get Rs.1,000 while a maximum of Rs.5,000 would be paid to each family.

No one died in the Friday night fire in Mumbai’s Bandra area Friday night, destroying nearly 2,000 huts. Twenty-five fire tenders extinguished the fire Saturday morning.

I won’t sing in a Bollywood film: Kishori Amonkar

Mumbai, March 05: Celebrated classical singer Kishori Amonkar, who once ventured into playback singing in the film “Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne”, says that she would never want to tread that path again.

“I wanted to experiment with words and rhythm and I wanted to see how these two would work with my notes. But then I discontinued because I wanted to do much more in the world of notes, I call my singing a language of notes,” the Padma Vibhushan awardee told IANS at the launch of Saregama’s album “Rishi Gayatri” by Yogiraj Siddhanath.

India not taking Ireland lightly, says Dhoni

Bangalore, March 05: Ireland are no longer minnows for India after their dramatic victory over England, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted here Saturday.

“Defeat by Bangladesh in 2007 edition still haunts us, we do not take any opponent, including Ireland, lightly. We are focussed as it is an important game for us,” Dhoni told reporters ahead of their World Cup Group B match here Sunday at the Chinnaswamy stadium.

I have done no wrong, says Kalmadi

Pune, March 05: Back in his hometown after a long time, a defiant Suresh Kalmadi, a Congress veteran accused of corruption in organising the Commonwealth Games, insisted Saturday that he had done no wrong.

Addressing a meeting for the Pune Municipal Corporation Standing Committee, the Pune MP denied he was absconding in the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the corruption charges.

Kalmadi said he was in Bangkok when the CBI raided his bank lockers here March 1.

“I will never run away. There is need to as I have not done anything wrong,” he said.

Libyan military attacks anti-government forces near Tripoli

Tripoli, March 05: A military offensive on Libya’s Az Zawiyah city, near the country’s capital, has witnessed the army managing to break through the opposition defences and enter the city by Saturday morning.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi launched the military attack on the city of Az Zawiyah Friday night using artillery and tanks, Al Jazeera reported on its website Saturday.

The government lost control of Az Zawiyah, some 60 km (37 miles) to the west of Tripoli, in late February and the city was viewed as a platform for an attack on the country’s capital to oust Gaddafi.

Fighting, explosions kill 49 in Libya’s rebel-held east

Cairo, March 05: Pro-Gaddafi forces were locked in a fierce battle with rebels in Libya’s east to reclaim the lost territory as the regime scrambled hard to quell fresh protests in Tripoli, amid reports that at least 49 people were killed in the fighting and explosions in a military arms depot.

Rebel-held Az Zawiyah, just 50 kms west of Tripoli, was the subject of a fierce assault by forces still loyal to 68-year-old Muammar Gaddafi.

Heavy casualties were reported there and in other key cities, including the eastern port of Ras Lanuf.

Akki-Sonakshi have been shooting for Joker and the images from the film’s sets clearly indicate that the two are bonding well during the shoot in north India.

Woman held at airport for traveling on fake visa

Shamsabad, March 5: Rajiv Gandhi International airport immigration authorities arrested a woman for traveling on fake visa and remanded her to police custody.

According to Shamsabad RGI police, Venkateshwari (35) resident of Bheemawaram West Godavari went to Muscat in 2006 and returned to India in 2009. She was intending to fly for Dubai when the immigration authorities caught her at airport.

Man Accused of Blasphemy Killed

Islamabad, March 05: A man who was accused of blasphemy was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi, two days after Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was killed by militants for opposing the controversial blasphemy law.

Mohammad Imran, who was booked for blasphemy with his friend Sajid Mehmood in April 2009, was killed by three masked gunmen in a shop in Danda village on the outskirts of Rawalpindi yesterday.

Bhatti Murder: Probe Widened to Include Taseer Killer

Islamabad, March 05: Pakistani authorities have widened the probe into the assassination of Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti to include members of his security detail and a detained police guard who had gunned down Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer for opposing the blasphemy law, a media report said today.

26/11: Pak court adjourns trial till March 19

Islamabad, March 05: A Pakistani court on Saturday adjourned till March 19 the trial of LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and six other suspects charged with involvement in the Mumbai attacks after prosecution lawyers boycotted proceedings when they were not allowed to take their security details into the makeshift courtroom in a heavily guarded prison.

The prosecution team went to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where the proceedings are being conducted behind closed doors for security reasons, with its paramilitary guards.

President, PM, Sonia visit Arjun Singh’s residence

New Delhi, March 05: President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi today visited the residence of Arjun Singh to pay their last respect to the party veteran who died here yesterday.

Vice President Hamid Ansari also went to 17, Akbar Road here in the morning to pay respect to the 81-year-old departed leader, whose body was later flown to his home state Madhya Pradesh for cremation.

Intense cold conditions persist in HP

Shimla, March 05: Intense cold wave maintained its grip in the mid and higher hills of Himachal Pradesh with minimum temperatures remaining three degree below normal even as weather cleared after a week.

Bhuntar was coldest in the non-tribal areas with minimum temperature at 3 degree Celsius while Shimla, Sundernagar and Solan recorded a low of 5 deg C.

Mandi, Palampur, Dharamsala and Una recorded a minimum temperatures of 5.3 deg C, 5.4 deg C, 7.3 deg C and 8.6 deg C respectively.

Infant and grand mother die as the house catches fire

Hyderabad, March 5: In a fire accident took place in Malakpet area an infant and her grand mother died of burns. The incident occurred at Shalivahana Nagar the previous night.

It is said that Narayan the owner of Balaji Grand Bazaar super market hosted naming ceremony of his grand daughter and the house was lit up for the occasion.
