No indication of AIADMK supporting Congress: CPI-M

New Delhi, March 06: With a seat-sharing pact between the Left and AIADMK expected to be sealed soon, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sunday said that there was no indication of the AIADMK forming an alliance with the Congress in Tamil Nadu.

“There is no such indication,” CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat said.

The Left is in an alliance with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, which goes to the polls April 13.

2,300 Indians evacuated from Libya over weekend

New Delhi, March 06: A record number of over 2,300 Indians were evacuated from Libya since yesterday and two-third of the estimated 18,000 Indian nationals would have been pulled out of the strife-torn country by this evening, government said today.

“Three special Air India flights from Tripoli and one from Sebha (Libya), besides the Red Star One ferry (from Misurata) accomplished this task. By late evening today, more than 2/3rd of our nationals would have been pulled out of Libya, totalling over 12,000,” External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

Mali tribesmen join pro-Gaddafi forces

Tripoli, March 06: Tribesmen from the Tuareg community of Africa’s northwestern country of Mali have joined the forces supporting embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, a media report said.

A large number of men from the ethnic group left Mali last week to join pro-Gaddafi forces in Libya, an unnamed official told BBC in Mali.

“About 2-300 have left in the last seven days,” a senior elected official said on condition of anonymity.

Another Tuareg man said: “It’s true many young men are leaving. It all started about a week back.”

Car used in Pakistani’s minister’s killing found

Islamabad, March 06: The vehicle suspected to have been used in the assassination of Pakistani minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti has been found, a media report said.

Bhatti, a 42-year-old Christian, was shot dead March 2 as he left his mother’s house in a posh locality in the heart of Islamabad.

A white vehicle had intercepted his official car, and two – some reports said three – men sprang out of the car and opened fire at the minister, giving him no chance to escape.

Mubarak had name stitched into suit stripes

London, March 06: Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak had his name stitched into the stripes of swanky custom-made suits for around 10,000 pounds per suit.

Magnified pictures in The Sun revealed tiny white letters spelling out “Hosny Mubarak” – an alternative spelling of the former president’s name – over and over again to form the vertical stripes.

According to cloth maker Holland & Sherry, from London’s Savile Row, the stripes may have cost around 10,000 pounds per suit.

The company said it must have taken around three months to weave the fabric.

China detains 15 more foreign journalists

Beijing, March 06: Police in Shanghai detained at least 15 foreign journalists who were trying to report a weekly anti-government “strolling” protest Sunday, two of the journalists said.

Two journalists said police detained them mid-afternoon outside Shanghai’s Peace Cinema where anonymous online organisers called for weekly “Jasmine” protests each Sunday from Feb 20.

“We are in an underground bunker, a really strange place,” Janis Vougioukas, a Shanghai-based correspondent for Germany’s Stern magazine, told DPA by telephone.

PMK presents wish-list of constituencies to DMK

Chennai, March 06: The PMK, which will contest 31 seats in the April 13 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, today presented its wish-list of constituencies to DMK which is leading the alliance.

A delegation of PMK leaders headed by party president G K Mani, MLA, called on DMK’s poll panel and submitted its list. They also met DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Mani claimed that the DMK-led alliance would win the elections on the basis of its performance.

Tigress killed by another tigress at Bandhavgarh

Bhopal, March 06: A tigress was killed by another tigress over territorial fight in Madhya Pradesh’s Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, officials said.

The carcass of the 9-year-old tigress Laxmi, who also had two cubs, was recovered from Salatekari area at Tala Range of the Reserve, in Umaria district yesterday, a top forest official said.

Laxmi was killed and eaten by another tigress named Kankati (4), after a possible fight over territory, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve’s Field Director C K Patil said, adding, Kankati had sustained an eye injury.

India not as corrupt as China and Russia: Fitch

New Delhi, March 06: India is not as corrupt as China and Russia, according to the global credit rating agency Fitch.

The country, however, suffers from excessive regulation and tax laws, which is concern for foreign investors, Fitch Group Managing Director for Corporate Rating Richard Hunter told PTI in an interview.

“We will certainly rank India well below Russia and China when it comes to concerns about corruption. Really big concern about India is regulation and tax treatment,” he said.

Over 600 condoms used everyday at CWG Games village

New Delhi, March 06: Athletes and officials at Commonwealth Games village seemed to have enjoyed steamy sessions as an average of nearly 640 condoms were used everyday during the 11-day-long sporting extravaganza, statistics from the Delhi Government suggest.

The Delhi State Aids Control Society has said that it has installed a condom vending machine at the Polyclinics of the Games village by Hindustan Latex Family Promotion Trust (HLFPT) and National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) during the games to encourage safe-sex among athletes.

Egypt names new interior minister

Cairo, March 06: Egypt’s newly-appointed prime minister Essam Sharaf named a new interior minister Sunday, a day after protesters stormed state security offices in key cities in a bid to prevent the destruction of official records.

According to a post on the government’s Facebook page, General Mansour el-Essawi would replace Mohmoud Wagdi who was appointed by then president Hosni Mubarak in the wake of the violent crackdown on protesters by security forces Jan 28.

Lashker OGW arrested in Doda

Jammu, March 06: A Lashker-e-Toiba Over Ground Worker was arrested in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here today.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint column of Rashtriya Rifles and Police apprehended the militant sympathiser from Puldoda area in Doda district last night, they said.

25-year-old Mohd Aslam Malik is a resident of Seel-Bhandas village in the district, they said, adding that he was working as courier and an informer guide with LeT militants.

Bangladesh team played bad cricket, says media

Dhaka, March 06: The Bangladesh cricket team has come in for severe media criticism for playing “bad cricket” and losing to West Indies last Friday.

The New Age newspaper put the debacle to “over confidence” among the players and the officials after the victory against Ireland.

“It was not just bad cricket. It was no cricket at all,” lamented The Daily Star Sunday.

In its editorial, The Daily Star lamented the “premature celebrations after rare victories” and “indulging players to the point of lionising them”.

Election Commission accepted 6 nomination papers

Hyderabad, March 06: Election Commission observer K. Chandramouli and Kadapa Joint Collector and Returning Officer K. Nirmala scrutinised the nominations filed for MLC LAC constituency candidates and accepted the papers of six candidates on Saturday.

One set of nomination each belonging to 3 candidates were accepted out of two nominations papers each filed by them. The papers of Challa Narayana Reddy, 29, and Chennam Narayana Reddy, 25, were rejected as they were under-aged as the EC stipulates a minimum age of 30 for contesting the election.

Gang raped in Bihar police station

Patna, March 06: Two Home Guards have been arrested in Bihar and face dismissal for raping a woman in a police station, police said Saturday.

A woman who had reportedly eloped in Kushinagar district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh was brought to the Patkhauli police station in Bagaha district Friday.

On Friday night, the Home Guards raped the woman, who complained to police Saturday.

Additional Director General Rajvardhan Sharma said Bihar Police chief Neelmani had ordered the dismissal of the Home Guards.

Pakistani policeman fatally shoots colleague

Islamabad, March 06: A Pakistani policeman shot dead one of his colleagues and injured six at a training centre in Karachi, a media report said Sunday.

Officials told Dawn News that about 10 policemen deputed with the Sindh Reserve Police (SRP) were sitting outside the computer section of the Saeedabad police training centre when they were attacked Saturday night by police constable Mohammad Farooq.

Mohammad Younus was killed and six policemen, including a sub-inspector, were injured, said Akram Sheikh, a police official.

Farooq has been arrested.

No threat to UPA government: Mulayam Singh

Lucknow, March 06: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Sunday said “as of now” there was no threat to the Congress-led UPA government after the DMK announced pullout of support. However, he declined to say whether his party has been invited by the Congress to join the central government that has been reduced to minority.

Speaking at a press conference at the party office here, the former chief minister said: “As of now, there is no threat to the central government.”

Screening can save Indian women from killer cancer

Washington, March 06: With over 366 million Indian women over 15 at risk for developing cervical cancer, an Indian American specialist says regular pre-cancer screening can prevent this killer disease.

“Cervical cancer is the most common cancer afflicting women in India and almost 73,000 women die from the disease each year,” says Connecticut based Neena Singh, medical director for Quest Diagnostics, the largest pathology laboratory in the world.
