No central forces to tackle marche

Hyderabad, March 06: A Major chunk of armed central paramilitary forces stationed in the state capital to tackle the Telangana agitation may be asked to take it easy during the Million March to Hyderabad on March 10.

Forces like the Border Security Force (BSF), which is trained only in using weapons, may be asked to stay put in their camps that day and only a few of their personnel would be kept stand-by, that too far away from the venues of protest.

Congress Telangana leaders to meet Sonia by 12th

Hyderabad, March 06: Telangana Congress leaders, who include ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs, yesterday decided to intensify building pressure on the party high command to get a favourable statement on the statehood demand.

Towards that goal the Telangana ministers decided to meet party chief Sonia Gandhi before March 12. Till then, the MLAs and MLCs will continue to boycott the Assembly and Council sessions. In case of an unfavourable response from the high command, they will not hesitate to quit their posts for the Telangana cause.

Seemandhra Congress firm on ‘united’ stand

Hyderabad, March 06: Seemandhra Congress MLAs and MLCs today reiterated their commitment to the cause of united Andhra Pradesh. They have decided to go to Delhi to submit a memorandum to the Congress high command after the Assembly budget session ends on March 29.

They passed a resolution to this effect at a meeting held at the ministers’ quarters in Banjara Hills which was attended by 35 members, including six ministers.

Interestingly, minister Botsa Satyanarayana, who was not against bifurcation, also attended the meeting.

Congress announces names of 4 candidates

Hyderabad, March 06: The Congress party Central leadership has cleared the names of incumbents, who include Council vice-chairman Mohammed Jani, senior Congress leaders Paladugu Venkata Rao and B Changal Rayudu, and Sudhakar Babu for four MLC seats.

It has not yet finalised the name for one more seat. In the present situation, the ruling Congress could win five seats (out of a total of 10 MLC seats) since it has decided to leave two seats to the PRP and MIM. The remaining three seats will be bagged by the main opposition TDP depending on its strength in the Assembly.

Pregnant woman killed in full public view

Vishakapatnam, March 06 : A pregnant woman, who was returning home on foot, was brutally killed in full public view at Maddilapalem sending shock waves across the city on Friday.

Duvvi Krishnaveni was married and was into her third month of pregnancy. Her husband Ch Ravi Kumar is suspected to have killed her.

She was a final-year engineering student (Computer Science) of the Vignan College of Engineering, Duvvada.

State mulls Gujarat model of power distribution

Hyderabad, March 06: The state government has ambitious plans to augment the power generation and distribution in the state to meet the demand in the next 10 years.

Replying to questions during question hour in the state legislative Assembly today, information technology minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said that the state government was planning to add around 16,000 MW of power to the present capacity and would adopt the Gujarat model of power distribution to see that all the villages would get round-the-clock power supply to households.

ASI, head constable held for extortion

Anantapur, March 06: An Assistant sub-inspector and head constable were arrested on charges of extortion in Puttparthi yesterday and search is on for another constable, who was their accomplice.

According to police higher officials, the accused ASI Gangulappa, head constable Siva Prasad and constable Munya Naik went to the apartment of one, Patel (70) on February 28 and claiming to be naxals, they demanded `1 lakh. Fearing for his life, Patel gave them Rs 90,000 which was all the money that he had at that time.

UKG kid thrashed for not doing home work

Warangal, March 06: A UKG student was thrashed mercilessly by his teacher for not doing his maths home work on Friday. The incident came to light this morning after which a mob attacked the school and damaged furniture while the teacher fled the school.

Four-year-old Anish Balaji is a student of Victory Public School in Lingala village in Regonda mandal. Police said he went to school as usual yesterday.

Warangal student succumbs to tear gas

Hyderabad, March 06: A student, who inhaled tear gas released by police on students during recent clashes on the Osmania University campus and developed health complication, died yesterday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Warangal.

The student, M Ashok, was a first year student of MA (public administration) at PG college, Secunderabad. According to reports, Ashok took part in the recent ‘Chalo Assembly’ protest called by OUJAC demanding tabling of separate Telangana bill in the Parliament.

Demand for action against chief priest

Tirupati, March 06: Taking exception to some observations believed to have been made by TTD chief priest AV Ramana Deekshitulu, TTD Employees Association Joint Action Committee leaders have demanded that the TTD take action against the priest for making such comments against the management.

Addressing a press conference here yesterday, JAC leaders Venkataramana Reddy, Lakshminarayana Yadav, Ramachandra and others accused the priest of making controversial statements.

HC moved against Million March

Hyderabad, March 06: A Person hailing from Warangal filed a petition in the High Court yesterday, seeking denial of permission to the Telangana Joint Action Committee to organise Million March to Hyderabad on March 10 on the ground that it clashes with the Intermediate examinations.

The High Court ordered the state government to file its response by March 8.

The petition was filed by S Chakrapani, a resident of Warangal district. He contended that lakhs of Intermediate students are supposed to take their examination on March 10.

Start early for exams, students told

Hyderabad, March 06: With the proposed ‘Million March’ by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) on March 10 nearing, school authorities have begun advising students to leave from home early to reach their examination centres in time.

4 students in Hyderabad end life

Hyderabad/ Sangareddy, March 06: Alleged financial problems, fear of examinations and health reasons drove four students to end their lives in the city and neighbouring Medak district on Friday.

In Patancheru of Medak district, a first year engineering student committed suicide allegedly unable to bear the pressure from his college management to pay the fees before the examinations.

According to police, K Shankar Reddy (19), was a first year ECE student of TRR Engineering college at Inol village in Patancheru mandal.

‘Telangana CLP’ meet today

Hyderabad, March 06: In the light of fast changing political developments in the region on separate statehood issue, the Telangana public representatives of the ruling Congress have called for a ‘Telangana CLP’ meeting here today to discuss the developments taking place in the Parliament as well as in the State Assembly, and also the ongoing Telangana agitation and non-cooperation movement of Telangana employees.

The meeting is expected to take place at the Ministers’ Club House or at the residence of one of the Telangana ministers in Banjara Hills tomorrow at 4 pm.

Centre to call meet of 3 CMs on Polavaram issues

New Delhi, March 06: Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday said he would convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh to find a way forward for Polavaram irrigation and hydel project in Andhra Pradesh.

Replying to a short notice question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said although the forest clearance was given to the project, there was a condition that there would be no submergence in Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

Maha CM announces aid for victims of Bandra fire

Mumbai, March 06: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today announced an aid of Rs 25,000 for each family affected in the fire in the Garib Nagar slums here on Friday.

“I sympathise with 1,300 families who lost their houses in the fire. The victims would get Rs 25,000 per family from the Chief Minister’s fund, over and above the help announced by the state government,” Chavan told reporters here after visiting the site.

A committee under Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad would be set up to ensure that proper compensation is given to the victims, he said.

Police stations in naxal-hit Maharashtra districts declared sensitive

Mumbai, March 06: Reviewing threat perception from Maoists in two Naxal-infested districts of Maharashtra, the state government has declared several police stations, armed outposts and the office of a top cop in the Naxal hotbed as ‘very sensitive’ for the next two years.

In Gadchiroli district, 10 police stations, 14 sub police stations and 29 armed outposts have been declared as very sensitive. Whereas six police stations and eight armed outposts in Gondia district have been categorised in the same bracket, a senior home department official said.

British troops ready for Libya deployment

England, March 06: The British government has placed its troops on standby to deploy them to Libya at 24 hours’ notice, if the crisis in the country escalates, it has been emerged.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed on Saturday that the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment Scotland, is on “notice to move” as part of the military build-up in the southern Mediterranean, although there were no immediate plan to fly troops to Libya, an MoD spokeswoman said.

Cong stand on infiltration clear: APCC

Guwahati, March 06: The Congress unit in Assam today asserted that the party’s stand on infiltration from Bangladesh was clear and there was no difference of opinion among top party leaders on the issue.

“There is no contradiction as reported by the media between the recent statements made by AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh and chief minister Tarun Gogoi on the matter,” Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita told reporters here.
