US rally raps demonization of Islam

New York, March 07: American Muslims have staged a rally in New York to protest against a US politician’s planned congressional hearing on “radicalization” of Islam in the country.

An alliance of over 100 nonprofit and governmental institutes rallied on Sunday in the Time Square, and denounced the scheduled hearing proposed by US Republican Congressman Peter King as “racist” move aimed at demonizing Muslims, the Associated Press reported.

Jordanians demand prisoners’ release

Amman, March 07: Hundreds of anti-government protesters have once again taken to the streets in the Jordanian capital, Amman, demanding the release of political prisoners.

More than 400 protesters gathered in front of the king’s newly appointed Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit’s office and called for political prisoners’ release.

The demonstrators said the prisoners had been jailed to “please the US and Israel.”

Britain plays double game on Libya

Tripoli, March 07: Amid growing criticism of the British government over its recent links with Muammar Qaddafi’s regime, it has emerged that London has still formal ties with the dictator’s government.

Under a deal struck after the “tent in the desert” summit between former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Qaddafi in 2004, the Huddersfield University is training 103 members of Libyan police in the latest policing skills including forensic science.

The group of Libyan police members include senior officers among them a brigadier.

Israel urged to reopen Karni crossing

Jerusalem, March 07: Gazan truck drivers have blocked entry to the remaining commercial crossing in Gaza, calling on Israel to reopen the other crossing that it closed last week.

The union of commercial transportation drivers went on strike in front of the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing in southern Gaza on Sunday to protest closing of another crossing, a Media correspondent reported from Gaza.

Israel authorities have permanently closed the Karni crossing, leaving Kerem Shalom as the only commercial crossing open to transport goods into the coastal enclave.

Hyderabad, March 06: The research team in BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus which is working in the area of drug discovery, has received support from the Support Program for Scientific and Technological Cooperation between trilateral India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA), funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), India for their work in the area of a revolutionary anti-HIV drug.

BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad campus is one among the four top-of-the-line universities globally to receive this support.

‘Clinical trials to be made transparent’

Hyderabad, March 06: The country is being wrongly projected as a guinea pig for human clinical trials in the medical field but on the contrary, we are behind other countries in this regard, said Surinder Singh, Drugs Controller General of India.

“Around 1 lakh human clinical trials happen all over the world in a year. Among these, 52,000 trials happen in USA alone. Even Canada is home to large number of such trials whereas only 1.2% of these trial take place in India,” he informed.

Drinking water shortage in summer likely

Hyderabad, March 06: Though major reservoirs in the city are brimming close to full capacity levels, denizens are likely to face drinking water shortage in summer as the pumping system is not equipped to draw more water.

Presently, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) supplies 340 millions gallons of water per day (MGD) from the five reservoirs- Singur, Manjira, Akkampally (Krishna), Himayath Sagar and Osman Sagar. However, the daily drinking water demand is expected to increase to about 370-380 MGD during the next three months.

Stringent action in the offing for video piracy

Hyderabad, March 06: The state government is contemplating taking stringent measures to curb video piracy by imposing heavy penalty, enhancing the period of punishment and amending the existing video piracy act with provisions of non-bailable warrant.

A meeting was convened by a group of ministers at the Secretariat to discuss the proposal of including offences of video piracy under the ambit of AP Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Dacoits, Drug Offenders, goondas, immoral traffic offenders and Land Grabbers Act as is done in TN, Maharastra and Kerala.

‘Hangover’ at Secretariat

Hyderabad, March 06: “Rao garu, maaku tea kavali (Sir, we want to have tea),” said an employee from Telangana at the Secretariat canteen. “Nenu T ivvalenu, kaani tagadaniki tea maatram santhoshamga ippisthanu (I can’t give you Telangana but will happily offer tea),” pat came the reply from Prabhakara Rao, an employee from Coastal Andhra.

With the ‘hangover’ of the non-cooperation movement, which was called off on Friday, yet to wear off, employees at the Secretariat preferred lively conversations over ‘chai-paani’ and lunch at the canteen to working at their desks on Saturday.

Inter student electrocutes himself

Hyderabad, March 06: Under pressure from his parents to continue in the boarding hostel where he was staying, a student of Narayana Junior College, Kukatpally, ended his life by coming in contact with a high tension wire late on Friday night.

Kukatpally police said that N Vineet Reddy, a native of Nizamabad district, was pursuing his first year intermediate in Narayana College as a boarding student.

Friday around midnight, Vineet Reddy went to the second floor, took a mop with a steel rod and used it to connect with a passing high tension wire outside the balcony. He died instantly.

Woman gagged, robbed of 4-tola gold

Hyderabad, March 06: Even as the Cyberabad police commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao was visiting fringes of the city to take stock of numerous robberies taking place in those places, unidentified miscreants robbed a woman of her gold ornaments after gagging her at Jeedimetla under Cyberabad commissionerate limits yesterday.

Two persons approached a realtor, Ch Subba Rao of Apurupa Colony, around 11 a.m saying that they want to take a portion of their house for rent. After checking it, they told Rao that they would tell their decision in the afternoon.

DMK MPs to submit their resignation on Monday

Chennai, March 06: A day after Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) announced its decision to pull out of the Congress-led Indian government, the party said on Sunday that its ministers would submit their resignation on Monday.

“Our ministers will go to Delhi to submit their resignation tomorrow,” DMK senior leader and Lok Sabha MP, T R Baalu, told reporters at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam here.

The party has six members in the Union Cabinet including M K Alagiri and Dayanidhi Maran.

HC rejects plea of Satyam Raju’s kin

Hyderabad, March 06: A High Court bench comprising justice G.Raghuram and justice Reddy Kanta Rao today dismissed a batch of petitions filed by the kin of Satyam Computer Services founder B Ramalinga Raju questioning the government’s action of attaching the properties of their family members. Besides, the bench upheld the legality of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Teja Raju, Rama Raju and some other members of Ramalinga Raju’s family approached the court after their properties were attached by government authorities for their ‘involvement in money-laundering’.

Delay in marriage drives youth to suicide

Hyderabad, March 6: A youth distraught by delay in marriage with uncle’s daughter hanged himself to death. The incident took place under Naridmet police station limits. According to police sources Daniel John (24), in drunken state, hanged himself to death yesterday night in front of his house.

‘AICC treating Telangana leaders as untouchable’

Hyderabad, March 06: Describing the reconstituted Congress Working Committee as an ‘’old wine in a new bottle,’’ veteran Congress leader G Venkata Swamy, who was dropped from the CWC in yesterday’s revamp by the party’s central leadership, said today that the All India Congress Committee was treating all leaders demanding Telangana state and involved in the movement as ‘’untouchables.’’ He said that Andhra Pradesh was totally ignored in reconstituting the CWC.

State to get more fire tenders

Hyderabad, March 06: Bringing much-needed relief to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Service (APSDRFS), the state government has sanctioned funds for the procurement of fire tenders and the department could have 22 new fire tenders at their disposal by March end.

Officials of APSDRFS said the state government had already sanctioned Rs 4 crore adding to the Rs 2 crore tapped by the department under a central scheme.
