India, Pakistan share information on 26/11 terror attack, Samjhauta train blast

New Delhi, March 29: India and Pakistan have agreed to exchanged progress reports on the probes into the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and the Samjhauta train blast respectively during the Home Secretary level talks, which concluded here on Tuesday.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and reaffirmed the need to bring those responsible for such crimes to justice.

Congress, BJP to fight it out in six Dibrugarh seats

Hyderabad, March 29: Andhra legislators never had it so good – apart from a huge jump in their salaries and perks, each one has been gifted a wide range of electronic goods from laptops to mobile phones.

It was a bonanza for each of the 294 members of the assembly and 90 members of the legislative council. On the last day of the budget session, the legislature passed a bill hiking their salaries and allowances by about 150 percent.

Quake, conflict fallout will impact IT sector

Hyderabad, March 29: The fallout of conflicts in parts of the Middle East and the earthquake in Japan will impact global IT business, a top official of India’s largest software exporter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said Tuesday.

He, however, considered the overall environment as positive.

N. Chandrasekaran, TCS chief executive officer and managing director, told reporters that the uncertainty continues to exist both at the macro level and specifically in some regions.

FIR against Thackeray”s PSO

Panaji, March 29: A case was registered today against a Personal Security Officer (PSO) to Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray after he threatened a truck driver with a service revolver at Borim village, 35 kms from here, police said.

Superintendent of Police (North) Arvind Gauns told PTI that a truck driver lodged an FIR at Ponda police station against the PSO, who cannot be immediately identified.

According to police, the incident occurred in the afternoon when Thackeray”s convoy was proceeding from Ponda to Margao.

7 bodies found in car abandoned in central Mexico

Cuernavaca, March 29: Police found the bodies of six men and one woman inside a car abandoned in an exclusive gated community near the picturesque central Mexican city of Cuernavaca.

Morelos state police said officers found three bodies inside the car and four more in the trunk in the town of Temixco near Cuernavaca. Police gave no other details.

Violence spiked in Morelos state since the December 2009 death of drug kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva as splintered groups began fighting for control.

Gaddafi troops kill 142 in Misratah

Libya, March 29: Troops loyal to longtime Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have killed at least 142 civilians during an ongoing offensive against revolutionary forces in Misratah over the past ten days.

Medical sources said on Tuesday that Gaddafi’s loyalists also wounded 1,400 others in the key Libyan town during the 10-day period, AFP reported.

LeT militant killed in encounter at Sopore

Srinagar, March 29: A wanted Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant from Pakistan was on Monday killed in a gunbattle with security forces at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“An LeT militant, Chacha Talha, was killed in an encounter with security forces at Reban in Sopore town, 55 Kms from here,” a police spokesman said.

The gunbattle broke out after security forces launched an operation following information about the presence of militants in the area.

Strong aftershock hits Japan; no tsunami warning

Tokyo, March 29: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted northeastern Japan Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. The agency did not issue a tsunami warning.

The epicentre of the 7.54 p.m. (1054 GMT) quake was off Fukushima prefecture, the agency said.

There have been no reports as to whether the stricken Fukushima I nuclear power station was affected by the earthquake.

The same region was hit by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami March 11.

2G scam: Chargesheet against Raja on April 2

New Delhi, March 29: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed a two-day extension to the CBI to file on April 2 its charge sheet against former Telecom Minister A Raja and others in the 2G spectrum allocation case even as the agency said it was readying an 80,000-page document for submission.

In their status reports on the probe into the scam, given to the court in a sealed cover, the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed a bench of justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly that the case involved large-scale violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act and benami transactions.

Muslim group threatens to disrupt William’s wedding

London, March 29: A group of extremist Muslims has allegedly threatened to disrupt the wedding of Prince William, saying “the day the nation has been dreaming of will become a nightmare”.

William, 28, will marry Kate Middleton, 29, at Westminster Abbey April 29.

A Muslim group – named Muslims Against Crusades – vowed to disrupt the royal wedding and even threatened to start a riot during the celebrations, The Sun reported citing Scotland Yard officials.

Rs 51.66 cr released for school uniforms

Chandigarh, March 29: Haryana government has released over Rs 51 crore to provide school uniforms to the students upto elementary level for the academic year 2011-12.

“School Management Committees (SMCs) have been constituted in all elementary level schools in the state to decide about providing school uniforms to the students of their respective school,” Haryana Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal said in a statement here.

Mubarak gets $339 as monthly allowance

Cairo, March 29: Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is getting a monthly allowance of $339 from the state, an Egyptian daily reported Tuesday.

However, Mubarak’s pension as the former commander of the armed forces could not be disclosed, the Al-Masry Al-Youm daily said, citing an unnamed state official.

Mubarak has kept out of the public eye since the uprisings forced him to step down in February and hand power over to a military council.

Maharashtra to ban controversial book on Gandhi

Mumbai, March 29: Maharashtra government will initiate steps to ban sale of a controversial book on Mahatma Gandhi by Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Joseph Lelyveld.

“Gandhiji was a respected leader and is known as the father of nation. He led the freedom movement of India. The government will initiate steps to ensure that the book is not published in the state,” Industries Minister Narayan Rane told the Legislative Council today.

The minister also informed that the state government would write to the Centre for not publishing the controversial book.

India, Pakistan agree on sharing information on 26/11, Samjhauta Exp

New Delhi, March 29: The second and final day of Home Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan ended here today, with both the countries agreeing to set up a hotline for exchange of information and promising to cooperate on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and the Samjhauta Express blast trials.

A joint statement was issued after the meet in which it was agreed that a hotline would be set up between the two countries which would help exchange of information.

Childless man commits suicide

Hyderabad, March 29: A man desperate to have kids committed suicide in Begumpet area.

Syed Shakir (26), resident of Noor Bagh, Paigadh was said to be a welder by occupation. He married Nazia Sultana two years ago. The couple didn’t have children. Suffering from mental trauma Syed Shakir yesterday night, poured kerosene over his body and set himself ablaze. He was rushed to the hospital where he died during treatment.

Police Begumpet have registered a case in this connection and investigations are on.
