Kakinada, February 28: Marking the ‘World Science Day,’ city-based Kuchibhotla Vasanthi Foundation is arranging lectures on science by eminent professor Rayaprolu Ramakrishna in the city on Monday. Prof. Ramakrishna, who retired from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will address students of Asram Public School from 11 a.m. to 12. 30 p.m. and students of Zilla Parishad High School, Ramanayyapet, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

LSP plea for extending trains

Adilabad, February 28: The Lok Satta Party’s Adilabad district unit on Sunday demanded that the Railway Ministry include at least a few train extensions in its Budget for 2011-2012. In a representation to the Ministry, the party maintained that extending a few trains to Adilabad railway station and elsewhere will benefit passengers from Adilabad, Nizamabad and Sangareddy Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and Nanded, Hingoli and Yavatmal constituencies in Maharashtra.

Kadapa, February 28: Kadapa One Town police registered a case of criminal intimidation and kidnap against former Kadapa Mayor P. Raveendranatha Reddy and Kadapa Market Committee Chairman P. Balamalla Reddy and some former municipal corporators, owing allegiance to former Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy group and arrested five of them around Saturday midnight.

Collector’s call for joint initiative to eradicate polio

Kakinada, February 28: Stressing the need for joint initiative by the government and non-governmental organisations to eradicate polio, district Collector M. Ravi Chandra on Sunday called upon the youngsters to create awareness among the parents of children below five years of age about pulse polio immunisation programme. Inaugurating the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme here at the municipal school in Endowment Colony, Mr. Ravi Chandra said the immunisation would protect children from polio.

BJP: people waiting to oust Congress

Ongole, February 28: “All sections of people are disappointed with the Congress-led UPA government. They are waiting for an opportunity to get rid of it,” said State BJP official spokesman Sannapareddy Suresh Reddy on Sunday.

Food poisoning affects students

Nalgunda, February 28: Seven students of the Backward Classes Hostel here were affected by food poisoning on Sunday after they consumed rice with tomato and egg curry, instead of regular breakfast. They are being treated at the Government Headquarters Hospital after suffering from stomach pain and vomiting and are said to be out of danger.

District Medical and Health Officer Dr. Narasimlu deputed a medical team to the hostel to treat the other inmates of the hostel. The students hospitalised were Bhavani, J, Pushpalata, Dhanalakshsmi, Mamata, E. Pushpalata, S.Manjula and E. Lakshmi.

Cricket betting racket busted

Vijaywada, February 28: The Commissioner’s Task force busted a gang that was allegedly involved in cricket betting here on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference here, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) M. Ravindranath Babu said that they arrested five persons who were organising cricket betting from a house in Madhura Nagar. The police seized Rs. 2.10 lakh cash, a laptop, a portable colour television set, 12 cell phones, voice recorder amplifier and bookie balance sheets from their possession.

Telangana poets differ on boycott of counterparts

Hyderabad, February 28: A conference of poets from Telangana here on Sunday witnessed differences of opinion on boycotting their counterparts from coastal districts for not supporting separate Telangana.

The issue came up when Juluri Gowrishanker, general secretary of Telangana writers’ forum, mooted the idea of not sharing literary platforms with poets from coastal districts since they neither wrote in favour nor supported the movement for separate State despite residing in Hyderabad. He suggested that all of them and their meetings should be boycotted.

The process can cause cancer patients to lose muscle mass and become malnourished, leading to fatigue, a decreased quality of life and shorter survival.

Researchers believe that supplementing the diet with fish oil – which contains omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid – may help patients maintain or gain muscle, the journal Cancer reports.

Mukherjee raises credit flow to farmers by Rs.1 lakh crore

New Delhi, February 28: In a move to provide better access to affordable loans to the farming community, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the general budget for 2011-12 Monday said the government was increasing credit flow to farmers by Rs.1 lakh crore.

“For the year 2011-12, I am raising the target of the credit flow to the farmers from Rs.375,000 crore to Rs.475,000 crore,” Murkherjee said, emphasising that farmers need access to affordable credit.

Indian stock markets give thumbs up to budget, Sensex soars

New Delhi, February 28: Indian equities markets Monday continued to rise well after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presneted the general budget as investors gave their thumbs-up to decisions like allowing foreign investment in mutual funds, and raising the cap on foreign institutional investment in corporate bonds.

Mukherjee raised the limit for funds to be invested by foreign investors in the Indian infrastructure sector and also allowed mutual funds to accept foreign funds.

Fugitive Indian casino king seeks truce with Nepal

Kathmandu, February 28: A controversial Indian businessman who enjoyed monopoly over Nepal’s multi-billion rupee casino industry but had to flee the country after growing disputes with the government has sought a truce, his lawyers and trade union groups said.

Rakesh Wadhwa, whose Nepal Recreation Centre once owned seven of the 10 casinos in Nepal but who fled to New Delhi last year to avoid being arrested for non-payment of royalty to the government, says he is ready to return if the warrant is dropped and a conducive environment created for negotiations.

Kodandaram meets Keshava over Telangana JAC threat

Hyderabad, February 28: Chairman of Telangana Joint Action Committee M. Kodandaram on Sunday met Congress Working Committee member K. Keshava Rao in wake of the threat held out by pro-Telangana protagonists to burn the effigies of Congress leaders.

A day after the open announcement by the TJAC that they would target Congress leaders from the region and burn their effigies, Prof. Kodandaram spent over an hour reviewing the Telangana agitation with the senior Congress leader and Peddapalli MP G. Finance minister has done a good job: PM

New Delhi, February 28: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has “done a good job” by presenting a growth-oriented and inclusive budget.

“The finance minister deserves congratulations for maintaining a high growth rate despite the adverse international economic climate,” Manmohan Singh said in an interview to the national broadcaster Doordarshan.

He did not agree to the observation that there was not much for the corporate sector in the budget.

Dubai Customs foiled bid to smuggle 51 fraud credit cards heading to the local use via Dubai Intl Airport

Dubai, February 28: Dubai Customs at Dubai International Airport has foiled bid to smuggle 51 counterfeit bank credit cards valued at Dh1million by an Asian passenger who intended to smuggle them to the local use. Ali Almaghwai, Senior Manager of Airport Passenger Operation Department, explained the details of the scam saying the international cooperation for information exchange and high efficiencies of Dubai Customs inspectors led to successful seizure of the smugglings.

US, allies discuss no-fly zone over Libya

Washington, February 28: The US was weighing options of declaring a no-fly zone over Libya in response to its growing unrest, media reports said.

US officials Sunday talked to European and NATO allies about the measure, which would aim to prevent airstrikes against the civilian uprising, The New York Times said.

A UN diplomat was quoted as saying that such a move would require backing from the UN Security Council, which was unlikely to approve it unless such an aerial attack happened first.
