AP Assembly adjourned for day amid uproar on Telangana

Hyderabad, February 28: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was adjourned without transacting any business after it was rocked by the vexatious Telangana issue for the eighth day today.

Order was not restored in the House even after two adjournments forcing Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar to adjourn it for the day.

The contentious statehood issue continued to push the Assembly into turmoil as the Telugu Desam Party MLAs from the region rushed into the Well of the House demanding that a Bill for creation of a separate Telangana state be immediately tabled in Parliament.

Bangalore, February 28: England’s hard-hitting batsman Kevin Pietersen says the thrilling tie against India in the World Cup match here was the best one-day game of his career.

England, chasing a mammoth 339, managed to tie the match last night riding on skipper Andrew Strauss’ brilliant 158-run knock.

68 more Indians return from Libya, 600 to arrive Monday night

Mumbai/New Delhi, February 28: The third batch of 68 Indians from violence-torn Libya landed in Mumbai in a Gulf Air flight Monday morning. Another 600 Indians will be brought back on two special Air India flights in the night.

With the fresh arrivals, the total number of Indians who have returned from Libya, where the revolt against the Muammar Gaddafi government has turned violent and claimed over 1,000 lives so far, has reached around 600.

Miscreants attack mosque at Karman Ghat

Hyderabad, February 28: In an incident that took place at Karman Ghat a group of miscreants attacked Imam of a mosque and left him injured and also hurled stones on the mosque.

According to details a miscreant was passing urine at the main gate of Masjid Mir Saheb looking to that Imam of the mosque Syed Rizwan forbade him from doing so. The miscreant got angry with the Imam and abused him.

Better than expected Budget, India Inc hails FM

New Delhi, February 28: The industry today welcomed the Budget terming it as “positive” and “growth-oriented” and some leaders were pleasantly surprised with the unchanged excise rate in major sectors.

“Overall, the Budget is a growth-oriented and a good one and it has not taken the last year’s growth for granted,” CII President Hari Bhartia said.

He, however, said the Finance Minister should have given more stress to the health sector and the “demand for treatment of healthcare as infrastructure has been overlooked”.

Mkts give thumbs up to Budget, Sensex soars 550 points

Mumbai, February 28: Cheering Budget proposals enhancing FII limits and slashing the surcharge on corporate tax, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex was trading over 550 points higher at mid-session today.

The Sensex kept rising after the Budget was tabled in parliament, gaining 550.23 points to 18,251.14 on fund buying triggered by budgetary proposals to hike FII limits and reduce surcharge on corporate tax, as well as the emphasis on containing inflation and spurring economic growth.

IT exemption limit for individuals now Rs 1.8 lakh

New Delhi, February 28: Income tax exemption limit for individuals has been raised from Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh, giving a relief of Rs 2000 to every tax payer, in the Budget for 2011-12 which widened the Service Tax net to cover more services that will raise the cost of air travel, hotel accommodation and those who drink in AC restaurants.

World’s first 660 KV power cable in China

Beijing, February 28: A 660-kilovolt direct current power transmission system, said to be the world’s first, began to supply energy Monday to a province that is located over 1,300 km away.

The transmission system began carrying power from northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to the eastern Shandong Province.

The 10.4-billion-yuan ($1.58 billion) project is part of China’s west-east power transmission programme, Xinhua reported.

State-run banks get Rs.6,000 crore

New Delhi, February 28: To strengthen the banking sector in India, the government Monday said it will allocate Rs.6,000 crore to public sector banks and Rs.500 crore to regional rural banks.

“I propose to provide a sum of Rs.6,000 crore for the year 2011-12 to enable public sector banks to maintain a minimum tier I CRAR (capital to risk weighted asset ratio) at 8 percent,” said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday in his budget speech in the Lok Sabha.

Milk prices may go up in summer

Hyderabad, February 28: The coming summer could see a dip in milk productivity and this could affect the already spiralling milk prices.

We might see a 20 to 30 per cent shortage in milk supply in summer, said K. Bhaskar Reddy, MD, Creamline Dairy Products Limited, producers of the popular Jersey brand of milk. Andhra Pradesh consumes about 35 lakh litres of milk everyday. This shortage could result in a slight price rise, said Mr. Reddy pegging it Re.1. “If the farmer increases the price by a rupee, we have to transfer it to consumers.”

Pulse polio drive concludes

Hyderabad, February 28: The second round of the pulse polio programme concluded on Sunday with health authorities administering polio drops to 6,01,927 children in Hyderabad and 6,80,331 children in Ranga Reddy district.

In Hyderabad district, the health officials achieved 91.19 per cent coverage while in Ranga Reddy district, the authorities covered 96.27 per cent of children.

The target for Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district was 6,60,102 and 7,06,705 children below the age of five years respectively, the district health authorities said.

Union Minister calls on Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad, February 28: Union Minister of State for Coal Prateek Patil on Sunday afternoon called on Praja Rajyam Party President K. Chiranjeevi, in what was described as a personal visit facilitated by party MLA from Balkonda, Anil Eravat.

Mr. Anil and a few other close friends of the Union Minister were present when Mr. Patil met the Praja Rajyam President at his residence. It was said to be a courtesy call because the 36- year-old Union Minister was a long-time fan of Mr. Chiranjeevi.

NIMS doctors continue protest

Hyderabad, February 28: Medical services for patients at several departments at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) continue to be hit with the resident doctors boycotting duties since a week. They are demanding that the authorities implement the Pay Revision Commission (PRC).

The boycott by 150 doctors impacted outpatient facilities, elective surgeries and patient care at all in-patient wards. Resident doctors ‘on-call’ round-the-clock, have stopped their night visits. Some have even boycotted duties in the emergency department.

Young cancer survivors enthral audience

Hyderabad, February 28: They not only battled against something lethal but also proved that they could set an example for others. Participating in the ‘Dance like a child’ programme, a cancer awareness concert, few children, who are cancer survivors, exhibited courage and desire to lead a happy life.

Centre asked to end uncertainty in State

Hyderabad, February 28: Senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya has urged the Centre to put an end to the uncertain atmosphere prevailing in the State by announcing its decision on Telangana formation as there was a constitutional crisis with the government’s functioning coming to a standstill.

At a press conference here on Sunday, he said the executive was fully paralysed since the non-cooperation movement launched by the employees.

NCCL to achieve financial closure in three months

Hyderabad, February 28: The Nagarjuna Construction Company, now re-christened NCC Limited and given a new corporate look, on Sunday announced that it would achieve financial closure in three months, for the Rs.7,000 crore, 1,320 MW Nelcast Power Plant, in which it acquired a 55 per cent stake.

At a press conference here. NCC Ltd. managing director A. Ranga Raju said that in 39 and 42 months of its financial closure, phase one and phase two of 660 MW each respectively, would be operating.

Five held in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, February 28: The police on Sunday arrested five persons for allegedly leaking the question paper of the all India examination for the post of Assistant Administrative Officer in the Life Insurance Corporation of India, scheduled for Sunday.

Two sets of question papers, six mobile phones and Rs.6,000 in cash were recovered from the accused persons. The arrested have been identified as Yogeswar Kumar Rao (30) of Uttar Pradesh, P. Ashok Kumar (30) of Gandhinagar, B. Anna Rao (36) of Tukaramgate, Perla Srinivas (38) of Vijayawada and Gundla Srinivas (34) of West Godavari district.

Girl student dies of tablet overdose?

Hyderabad, February 28: A first-year B.Com student died reportedly due to overdose of medicines in the early hours of Sunday. P. Pranitha (18) of Borabanda gulped four tablets for headache on Saturday night and stayed awake till early hours of Sunday for completing her project report. She, however, developed complications around 5 a.m. following which the girl’s parents shifted her to a nearby hospital where doctors advised them to take her to another hospital at Ameerpet.

Plot auctions fall short of HMDA expectations

Hyderabad, February 28: Clearly falling short of expectations nurtured by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the auction of plots in different layouts in and around the city attracted 425 bids. The bids are to be opened on Monday.

And the biggest disappointment for the HMDA in this auction happens to be Nandagiri land which turned out to be a dud after a false start. Measuring 4.795 acres, this bit of land at an upset price of Rs.23.95 crore per acre alone was expected to have raised a minimum of Rs.115 crore.
