Cyclone Yasi forces thousands of Australians to flee

Melbourne, February 02: Thousands of people fled their homes and crammed into shelters in northeastern Australia on Wednesday as the most powerful cyclone in the country’s history barreled toward a string of popular tourist cities lining the coast. Police were forced to turn away people from some shelters which were already full, and engineers warned that even “cyclone proof” homes could be blown apart by winds expected to reach 300 km (186 miles) per hour when it hits later on Wednesday.

Clashes break out in Alexandria

Alexandria, February 02: Clashes have broken out between anti-government protesters and supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the city of Alexandria as millions urge the president to step down.

Opposition protesters say government forces and the police opened fire on demonstrators, but there are no reports of casualties so far.

The army sent in tanks and armored vehicles to break up the clashes, which were seen circling the city’s Mahatit Masr Square.

The troops fired in the air in an attempt to disperse the crowds.

Opposition dismisses Mubarak speech

Cairo, February 02: Egyptian opposition groups and figures have dismissed President Hosni Mubarak’s latest speech, saying it fails to meet the demands of the anti-government protesters.

Opposition figure and Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei called the president’s address deceptive and urged Mubarak to step down immediately, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

In a televised speech earlier in the day, Mubarak said that he would not run in the election scheduled to be held in September but said he would stay in office until then.

Eight killed in Peshawar blast

Islamabad, February 02: At least eight people, including two children, were killed Wednesday in a powerful blast in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

“The bomb was planted in a vehicle that was destroyed completely,” police said, adding that “several vehicles and nearby shops were also damaged in the blast”.

“At least 15 people have been injured (and they) have been shifted to the nearby hospital,” reported Samaa TV.

A police station seemed to be the target of the blast, but the terrorists could not enter it due to stringent security, police said.

Yemen reinforces security in capital

Sanaa, February 02: The Yemeni Interior Ministry has reinforced its security forces around the capital Sana’a and blocked byways to prevent the smuggling of weapons into major cities.

The measures were taken after it was reported that opposition parties were planning to stage an anti-government demonstration of millions of protesters in Sana’a on February 3.

Authorities have also warned executives at major investment banks that al-Qaeda terrorists in Yemen may be planning attacks against financial institutions or their high-ranking executives.

Feb. 4 declared the ‘Friday of departure’

Cairo, February 02: Egyptian protesters have declared that February 4 will be the “Friday of departure” for President Hosni Mubarak and say they will congregate at his palace on Friday afternoon.

Angry demonstrators, fed up with Mubarak’s three-decade rule, jeered at the president’s remarks while watching his speech on TV in Tahrir Square on Tuesday night and chanted that he should go immediately.

Karzai to start two-day visit to India from today

New Delhi, February 02: Afghan President Hamid Karzai will undertake a two-day visit to New Delhi from Wednesday during which the two countries will discuss the security situation in Afghanistan and take stock of the developmental work being undertaken by India there.

Karzai will hold substantive talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during which he is expected to apprise the Indian leader about the efforts being made to bring about peace in Afghanistan.

Egypt’s transition must begin now: Obama

Washington, February 02: Hours after embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced that he would not run for re-election in September, President Barack Obama warning of “difficult days ahead” said the transition in Egypt must begin now.

“We’ve borne witness to the beginning of new chapter in the history of a great country and a long-time partner of the United States,” Obama said in a brief statement to reporters at the White House less than three hours after Mubarak’s announcement in Cairo.

Iran lifts Afghan fuel supply restriction

Tehran, February 02: Iran has lifted all restrictions on fuel supplies to Afghanistan in response to the Afghan government’s declaration that it will not provide the fuel to NATO troops stationed in the country.

The Afghan ambassador to Tehran thanked the Islamic Republic for allowing the transfer of fuel to the country and promised that Iranian supplies would only be used by the Afghan people.

Ambassador Obaidullah Obaid also stated that Kabul wants to maintain friendly relations with Tehran.

Government doctor hangs self in Uttar Pradesh

Sitapur, Feb 02: A government doctor, who had just got engaged, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence here, police said Wednesday.

Ashish Rajani, 28, posted at the Sitapur district hospital, took the step Tuesday.

“After his engagement ceremony in Lucknow, Ashish returned Tuesday and joined his duty. We are yet to ascertain what prompted him to take the extreme step,” police spokesperson Sanjay Verma told reporters here, some 80 km from Lucknow.

Two pilots killed as chopper crashes into Nashik locality

Nashik, February 02: Two pilots were killed when a defence helicopter crashed into a thickly-populated residential area of this city Wednesday morning, police said.

The chopper crashed on a private bungalow shed in the Jai Bhavani Nagar area, little before 9 a.m., the Nashik police said.

The cause of the accident or the identity of the pilots is not known yet.

Defence officials from the nearby Deolali Camp area rushed to the site to investigate the crash.

The entire locality has been made out of bounds for people to facilitate the probe by defence authorities and police.

‘US wants orderly transition of power’

Washington, February 02: US President Barack Obama has said he told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that an “orderly transition” of power in Egypt must be peaceful and “it must begin now.”

After a 30-minute phone conversation with Mubarak on Tuesday, Obama said in a statement broadcast live on satellite television networks that the Egyptian leader “recognizes that the status quo is not sustainable and a change must take place.”

Pro-Telangana lawyers boycott courts, tension at Nampally

Hyderabad, February 02: Pro-Telangana advocates today boycotted courts in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh even as mild tension prevailed at the Nampally Criminal Court here after a group of protesting advocates allegedly “manhandled” police personnel.

The Telangana advocates were protesting against the “forceful” removal by the police of two lawyers M P Bhargav and Dileep, who were sitting on an indefinite fast demanding introduction of Telangana State Bill in the ensuing Parliament session and also seeking to inquire into “illegal appointments” in courts across the Telangana region.

Mamata loses cool, shouts at journalist

Kolkata, February 02: Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday lost her cool with a woman journalist who posed an uncomfortable question, sternly telling her not to be a “mouthpiece” of the West Bengal’s ruling Marxists.

The journalist asked Banerjee to comment on the Left parties’ allegation that the Railways was splurging money in advertisements. An angry Banerjee shot back: “First tell me from which media house you are”.

Two radio-tagged students detained

New Delhi, February 02: Two Indian students duped by a “sham” American university and forced to wear radio tags were today sent to a detention centre in the US after they complained about the movement monitoring device tied to their legs.

The two students of the now-shut California-based Tri Valley University, whose identity is not known immediately, would be released only after they furnish a bond of USD 8,000 to 20,000, according to information reaching here.

Bappi Lahiri to make acting debut on TV

Mumbai, February 2:Composer Bappi Lahiri is excited about his acting debut on the small screen in Disney’s new show “Ishaan”.

“I liked the idea, the script and also the fact that this was not just for singing but Disney offered me a chance to act as well. So I decided to take it up because I have never acted in a show,” Lahiri told IANS.

Lahiri will play a Disco King in the children’s show and has lent his voice for an original track titled “D.I.S.C.O.” for the show. The composer, has shot for two episodes that will be aired February end.

Dogs ‘can tell if you’re getting bowel cancer’

London, February 02: Believe it or not, dogs can sniff out bowel cancer in breath and stool samples, with a very high degree of accuracy, even in the early stages of the disease, a new research has revealed.

According to researchers, the man’s best friend’s sense of smell is 1,000 times more sensitive than a human’s, and as a result it can apparently pick up chemical compounds specific to certain cancers.

In the research, published in the ‘Gut’ journal, a labrador detected traces of cancer with more than 90 per cent accuracy from samples provided by volunteers.

BJP against Muslim quota in jobs in Bengal

New Delhi, February 02: Senior BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi on Tuesday said his party strongly opposed West Bengal Government’s decision on ten per cent reservation for Muslims in jobs. “West Bengal Government’s decision on Muslim reservation is unacceptable. We shall oppose it tooth and nail. line is unconstitutional too,” Joshi told a rally at Ashighar, 45 km from here.

“We are opposed to any reservation either on religion or on castes. Reservation should be given to the poorest of the poor irrespective of caste and religion,” Joshi said.

Mubarak announces stepdown, but with conditions

Cairo, February 02: President Hosni Mubarak defied a quarter million protesters demanding he step down immediately, announcing on Tuesday he would serve out the last months of his term and “die on Egyptian soil.” He promised not to seek re-election, but that did not calm public fury as clashes erupted between his opponents and supporters.

Chinese hair care company found using banned chemicals

Beijing, February 2:A hair care products company in east China has been fined for using banned chemicals in its products, China’s food and drug watchdog said Tuesday.

The Zhangguang 101 Co. Ltd. – based in Zhejiang province – paid 245,040 yuan (over $37,000) in fines and had its illegal gains confiscated, Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by the State Food and Drug Administration.

The products were bound for Singapore and Hong Kong markets.

An investigation found that some products made by the company contained minoxidil, an anti-hypertension drug.
