Arizona to re-consider adoption & divorce bills

Arizona, February 02: Legislators in Arizona are trying to reintroduce two bills that failed to get the needed support to be passed last year. State Senators are trying to get the Adoption bill and the Divorce bill back on the consideration table.

One in three adoptions that take place in Arizona are done by unmarried or single people. Legislators want to change that with the new bill that will give preference to married people over unmarried ones, when they go for adoption. The Bill is sponsored by Sen. Linda Gray, R-Glendale, and solidly backed by the Center for Arizona Policy.

Punjab wants road safety subject in schools

Chandigarh, February 02: The Punjab government wants road safety to be introduced as a subject in schools from the primary class level, a minister said here Wednesday.State Transport Minister Mohan Lal said that there was a need to introduce road safety as a subject in all government schools from the next academic session.

The minister was presiding over road safety council meeting. He said that drivers of the state-run roadways buses who have an accident-free record due to safe driving would be awarded from this year.

Narendra Modi expands Ministry, inducts six members

Gandhinagar, February 02: Chief Minister Narendra Modi today expanded his Council of Ministers by inducting six new members, taking the strength of the ministry to 27.

Governor Kamla administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers -Liladhar Vaghela, Ranjit Gilitwala, Mohan Kundaria, Ishwarbhai Patel, Jaydrathsinh Parmar and Jitu Sukhadia- at a function in Raj Bhavan here.

All have been give the rank of Minister of State.

According to political observers, the expansion has been done with an eye on the Assembly polls due in late 2012.

Centre cautioned against flirting with separatists

Jammu, February 02: Panun Kashmir, an oufit of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, today cautioned the Centre against “flirting” with the separatists.

“We are of the considered view that the problem in Kashmir is neither constitutional nor political and economic.

It is basically problem of uncontested communalism,” Panun Kashmir Chairman Ajay Chrungoo told reporters here today.

He claimed that the Centre was “continuing with its flirtations with various separatist formations in the state” and the respectability being conferred upon them was visible.

Governor summons Bengal Home secretary, DGP

Kolkata, February 02: Governor M K Narayanan summoned state Home Secretary G D Gautama and DGP Naparajit Mukherjee to Raj Bhavan today and is understood to have discussed law and order with reference to police charge on journalists in Midnapore town in which five reporters were injured.

The overall law and order situation, political violence and Maoist activities besides injuries to scribes during police raid on a guest house were subjects that were understood to have been discussed at the meeting, which lasted nearly an hour, sources said.

Nepal national arrested in Hyderabad for stealing Rs 20 lakh

Hyderabad, February 02: City police today arrested a 21-year-old Nepali national who allegedly decamped with Rs 20 lakh from a pharma company in Secunderabad here and claimed to have solved the case in less than 10 hours.

Thakur Santosh Bahadur, who allegedly stole Rs 20 lakh from the office of a pharma company yesterday morning, was arrested from the Nampally Railway station last evening and Rs 19.99 lakh was recovered from him, Additional Commissioner of Police (Coordination) A R Anuradha told reporters here.

Six killed as under-construction wall collapses in Bangalore

Bangalore, February 02: Six labourers were killed and as many injured when an under-construction wall near which they were working collapsed over them at CK Palya area here on Wednesday, police said.

Preliminary reports suggest that some labourers were trapped under the debris, they said, adding that efforts were on to rescue them.

School student arrested on suspicion of being Maoist

Jhargram (WB), February 02: Joint forces today arrested a school student suspecting him to be a Maoist, triggering widespread protests by his classmates and teachers at Mohanpur near here, police said.

Gouranga Khilari (15), a class X student of a local school, was initially detained and later arrested while he was going to school from home this morning, they said.

Angry at the action of the joint force, Gouranga’s class mates, teachers and villagers blocked the National Highway 6 near Baksole village till 3 pm, police said.

UK to impose new curbs on non-EU students

London, February 02: Britain is likely to impose new restrictions before granting visas to students from India and other non-EU countries as part of the Prime Minister David Cameron government’s promise to reduce immigration and curb visa abuse.

Current rules allow non-EU students to work for two years after completion of their courses. This is likely to be restricted as immigration minister Damian Green considers the outcome of a consultation exercise on this issue.

The migration of international students is worth 5 billion pounds to the UK economy annually.

New Delhi, February 02: Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh today said wetlands will be kept free from commercial activity and any states violating the government’s decision would have to stop such practicies immediately.

“No commercial activity on wetlands will be allowed in the interest of environmental conservation. We will stop all such practices in the states where efforts are being made to transform wetlands into wastelands,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Complaint leading to tapping of Nira Radia’s phone placed before Supreme Court

New Delhi, February 02: Government today placed before the Supreme Court a copy of the complaint on basis of which it started tapping corporate lobbyist Nira Radia’s telephonic conversations with a host of people including politicians, corporate leaders and media personalities.

The copy of the complaint in sealed cover was placed before a bench comprising Justice GS Singhvi and Justice AK Ganguly by the attorney general GE Vahanvati.

The bench said it will go through the complaint during the next hearing on February 24.

Order on probe into Assemanand’s confession leak tomorrow

New Delhi, February 02: A Delhi court today deferred for Thursday its order on a plea for registration of an FIR against a CBI officer and Tehelka magazine owner and editor for making public Swami Aseemanand’s confessions to a court about his alleged role in the Ajmer blast case.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjay Bansal, who was to pronounce the order today, deferred it as RSS activist Devender Gupta’s counsel Anupam S Sharma wanted to make some additional argument on the plea.

Train rooftop accident leaves 18 dead, blame game on

Lucknow, February 02: Four more youths succumbed to their injuries, taking the death toll in the train rooftop accident in Uttar Pradesh to 18 Wednesday. Even as some survivors blamed police, the authorities continued to pass the buck over why hundreds of youths had to sit atop a train, which led to the victims being crushed by an overbridge.

The accident occurred at Shahjahanpur Tuesday and the victims were youths who had assembled in nearby Bareilly for a recruitment drive of the paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

On January 31 Chandrapal and Dhirendra Singh called the BJP MP Varun on his mobile and allegedly threatened him with dire consequences, they said.

The sources said that on the basis of a complaint lodged by incharge of BJP’s district officer an FIR was lodged against Chandrapal and Singh at Amriya police station yesterday.
