FBI seeks info from Mumbai court on 26/11 terror attacks

Mumbai, February 04: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has sent in a request to the Indian authorities for information on Mumbai terror attacks since American nationals were killed in the carnage perpetrated by Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba terrorists.

The formal request through a Letters Rogatory has been sent to a Mumbai special court by a Chicago court, official sources said here today.

The information is needed by FBI which has been conducting a probe in the US about the terror attack on November 26, 2008 in which more than 160 people were killed, the sources said.

Mother killed by drunkard son

New Delhi, February 04: An 80-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her drunkard son in Outer Delhi for refusing to give in to his demand to sell their house, police said today.

40-year-old Somnath strangled his mother Amar Devi with his hands and smashed her head against the floor in Mongolpuri yesterday afternoon after she turned down his demand to sell the house, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), Chhaya Sharma, said.

The woman died during treatment at the hospital where she was rushed by her daughter.

Somnath has been arrested, she said.

ATM thief’s luck runs out

Hyderabad, February 04: D Yadagiri is not educated and does not even have a debit or credit card. But he was able to break open a ‘highly secure’ AT M. He knew that a AT M dispenses money but was not aware how it actually functions or where the money is stored.

Call it sheer luck or negligence of bank authorities, Yadagiri became a lakhpati in just 30 minutes. Yadagiri alias Yadi, a 45- year-old mason from Saidabad managed to break open the SBH ATM at Dhobighat in the wee hours of January 15.

Two Eurofighter Typhoons arrive for Bangalore’s air show

Bangalore, February 04: Two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, one of the six planes in the fray for the IAF’s 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft deal, arrived here today to take part in the Aero India show here, beginning February nine.

“The Typhoons from the Italian Air Force landed safely today at Bangalore’s Yelahanka air base for participation in the Aero India 2011 show,” company officials said.

Eurofighter is one of the six fighter aircraft producing companies which has pitched in for the MMRCA deal, estimated to be worth a whopping USD 11 billion.

CM’s visit aimed at checking J-impact?

Vijayawada, February 04: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy during in-camera meeting with party cadre of ten constituencies at Indira Gandhi municipal stadium here this evening tried to win their confidence.

Addressing party activists, the chief minister said that he would fill nominated posts in various corporations after Assembly session in March.

He told them that he would consult the party leadership before filling the nominated posts to do justice as MLAs and MPs were vying with each other to secure the posts for their supporters.

Fraudster cheating banks in police net

Hyderabad, February 04: A fraudster who cheated various banks by giving tampered demand drafts and cheques and secured loans by submitting false documents was nabbed on Thursday by Task Force sleuths.

The accused, 32-year-old J Sridhar is a resident of Hyderguda and native of Medak district. According to police, Sridhar’s father is a retired traffic inspector in APSRTC.

Sridhar discontinued his degree in second year and came to the city in search of a job.

Road underbridge to reduce travel time

Hyderabad, February 04: A four-lane road underbridge (RuB) being constructed between Fatehnagar and Nature Cure Hospital stations will be completed by March 31.

The RuB is being built using the modern Box Pushing Technique, which has enabled the South Central Railway (SCR), to carry on construction without disturbing train traffic.

Once the RuB is completed, it would provide direct connectivity between Begumpet and Fathenagar. It would also reduce the travel time for motorists using the present route through Begumpet- Green Park hotel- Lal Bungalow- Sheeshmahal- Balkampet.

Online forms for water connections from Feb 15

Hyderabad, February 04: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) managing director, M Jagadeeshwar announced that e-mail applications for new water supply connections will be introduced from February 15.

Sanctioning powers for new connections have been delegated to general managers (Engg) of all divisions after receiving feasibility report from the field online.

Applicants can pay the processing fee at the nearest cash counter. GMs were also directed to clear pending feasibility reports to already applied connections.

Students attack college; unions call for bandh

Hyderabad, February 04: The death of G Varalakshmi, a B.Tech first-year student of Vignan Engineering College, sparked protests by the college students who damaged the windowpanes and furniture of the college.

Last night the police had altered the case to Section 174 (suspicious death) following reports that the girl had ended her life unable to bear the harassment by the college management to pay college fee as there was delay in fee reimbursement from the government.

Now MLAs to have radio frequency identity cards

Hyderabad, February 04: After deciding to provide laptops along with printers and fax machines to all the MLAs, Assembly deputy speaker Nadendla Manohar has now decided to issue new Radio Frequency Identity cards (RFID) to the members on par with the system being implemented in the Parliament.

He also plans to hold a one-day seminar on ‘Understanding of the budget’ to the MLAs during the forthcoming budget session likely to begin on February 17.

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) would decide the date and time of the seminar.

Tirumala ghat road to be closed temporarily

Tirumala, February 04: The second ghat road from Tirupati to Tirumala will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9 am to 6 pm everyday from February 11 to March 31 for taking up repair works of the road.

According to TTD officials, laying of BT road works costing Rs 4.5 crore will commence from Sri Vinayaka Temple at the beginning of the second ghat road to the GNC toll gate on Tirumala _ a length of about 15.5 km.

The link road works will also be taken up between February 7 and 10. However, there will be no restriction on vehicular traffic during the four days.

‘Visakha Utsav’ again

Vishakapatnam, February 04: District-level festival, ‘Visakha Utsav’, which was not organised since 2006 will restart from this year.

M Kantha Rao, special secretary to Tourism ministry, made an announcement to this effect here today.

It will be held in the last week of February.

The district-level festival was launched by officials in 1996 with an aim to promote all round development of the district, in general and Vizag city, in particular.

Prisoners’ kin approach SHRC

Hyderabad, February 04: Several family members of the prisoners, who allegedly attacked Cherlapally jail staff in Papagni barrack recently, today approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) complaining that the jail authorities were not allowing them to meet the inmates.

One Ameena Fatima, wife of Jahib Zia-ul-Haq, who is lodged in the Cherlapally prison, informed the SHRC acting chairperson K Peda Peri Reddy that the jail staff were not been allowing her to meet her husband during the Mulaqat.

GoM to deal with fee reimbursement

Hyderabad, February 04: The state government has set up a group of ministers (GoM) to study the demand of managements of private professional colleges to clear up arrears of fee reimbursement and scholarships.

The ministers will hold discussions with the managements and students to resolve the issue apart from suggesting guidelines to be followed for fee reimbursement and payment of scholarships.

TTD cancels Arjita Sevas on February 10

Plan to make teachers more student-friendly

Karimnagar, February 04: Officials of the education department will soon make surprise visits to schools to check if teachers are handing out corporal punishment to students. This is one of three initiatives being launched by the department in Karimnagar district following reports of teacher cruelty on their wards in recent weeks. The three-point programme will be unfurled in the next few days. Teachers of both private and public schools will be under the scanner of education officials.

Police project under controversy

Hyderabad, February 04: A controversy is brewing in the AP police over an ambitious Rs 8 crore communications system following allegations of favouritism shown to one company in return for alleged kickbacks.

The Tetra communications system is meant to achieve effective coordination among various units of the police, particularly the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates.

Following allegations of favouritism, one of the bidders, the Motorola-HCL combine, has taken up the matter with the state government.

An enquiry into the deal appears imminent, top sources told Express.

Chidambaram’s visit raises hope of roadmap for Kashmir

Jammu, February 04: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Friday indicated the central government will speed up the process to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir crisis once it receives a final report of the three interlocutors, official sources said.

Chidambaram, who concluded a two-day visit to the state, reviewed the security situation in the mountainous districts of Jammu region at a meeting held at Kishtwar, about 210 km northeast of here.
