Four dead in mishap near Guna

Guna, February 05:Four persons were killed and five others were injured when the tractor-trolley in which they were travelling overturned about five km from here on the Guna-Ashoknagar road today.

Police said the deceased have been identified as Ramwati (45), her two sons Ajay (8) and Vijay (6), and Shivcharan (35).

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital. All of them hailed from village Pipariya near here.

Fake notes recovered from nullah

Nashik, February 05:A few bundles of fake notes in Rs 1,000 denomination were today found in a `nullah’ near here, police said.

The notes were recovered from Vadala Road area, where they were spotted by some passersby, they said, adding a probe has been launched to find out who had dumped them.

The exact face value of the counterfeit currency was not yet known.

On Wednesday, police had seized Rs 2.85 lakh in fake notes and arrested two persons at Trimbakeshwar near here.

Besides, Rs 4 lakh in real currency was also recovered from the duo.

New Delhi, February 05: The government on Thursday notified rules that allow non-resident Indians (NRIs) who fulfill certain criteria to vote in elections in India. The Registration of Electors (Amendment) Rules, 2011 also allow NRIs to, by extension, stand for elections in India.

Three killed in road accident

Karimnagar (AP) February 05:Three persons were killed in a road accident here when a lorry hit their motorcycle, police said today.

The mishap took place last night at Polasa villageoutskirts, around 60 kms from here when victims were on theirway to native Dharmapuri, they said.

The deceased have been identified as Upputla Niranjan(24) Bonagiri Rajender (24) and Dobbala Raju (20), police said.

The lorry driver is absconding and investigations are on, police added.

Mob turns violent, damages vehicles, sets two huts ablaze

Nashik, February 05:.Two huts were set afire and several vehicles were damaged here today in stone-pelting after an irate mob went on a rampage demanding arrests in connection with the murder of a local social activist, police said.

The incident took in Rokdobawadi and Devlaligaon area where two rival groups had gathered demanding arrests in the murder case of one Bapu Bhalerao, who was killed yesterday following group clashes, they said.

Penguin to release a book on ‘7 Khoon Maaf’

Mumbai, February 05: Penguin is set to launch a book on Ruskin Bond’s short story “Suzanna’s Seven Husbands”, which Bollywood filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj has adapted into a movie and titled it “7 Khoon Maaf”.

“Penguin will release the book Feb 19. This will help readers know our journey from the short story to the film,” said Bharadwaj.

“7 Khoon Maaf” stars Priyanka Chopra as the protagonist, who kills her seven husbands.

Fire at Iranian petchem complex kills 1

Tehran, February 5:The fire started Friday morning at the NGL fractionation unit of the complex, which is under construction, the Mehr news agency reported.

The Iranian Oil Ministry has not yet explained the cause of the fire.

Eight of the injured people are receiving treatment at the Mahshahr Petrochemical Industries Hospital, and the three others were transferred to Tehran for treatment due to the seriousness of their injuries.

Five months ago, a similar incident took place at the same unit, but no casualties were reported.

Anti-Mubarak demo held at Times Square

Cairo, February 5:Hundreds of people gathered behind police barricades in Times Square on Friday afternoon chanting “Mubarak must go.” One demonstrator held up a sign saying, “Long live the Egyptian intifada.”

The larger demonstrations in Egypt were named the “Day of Departure” for Mubarak.

The U.S. government says close to 60,000 Egyptian-Americans live in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Community members say the real number is twice that figure.

Onion growers condemn lathicharge by police

Malegaon, Feb 4 (PTI) Onion growers today condemned lathicharge on them by the police during a protest at Mungse area after some people pelted stones on policemen.

Five policemen were injured and vehicles were damaged in the incident yesterday.

The Agriculture Produce Market Committee at Mungse remained closed today after the incident, police said.

Police had arrested 41 farmers who were allegedly involved in stone-pelting.

Egypt revolution impacts Gaza fuel supply

Cairo, February 5:Gaza’s fuel supplies have dropped significantly due to the situation in Egypt, causing serious problems for Palestinians living in the territory.

Tel Aviv frequently shuts the borders of Gaza, and Israeli courts have also reduced the regular fuel quota entering the Gaza Strip for no given reason.

In addition, the fuel and other badly needed supplies that used to be brought in through the underground tunnels between Gaza and Egypt have stopped coming.

Criminal, arms supplier arrested in Mumbai with arms

Mumbai, February 5:A member of the Chota Rajan gang and an arms supplier were arrested in two separate cases by the Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch and arms recovered from them, police said Friday.

“Zuber Abdul Hamid Jamadar, who was arrested Wednesday is an aide and cousin of slain underworld operative Farid Tanasha,” Joint Commissioner of Police Himanshu Roy told reporters.

“Jamadar was booked for rioting and murder in the 1993 riots and had served a prison term during which he came into contact with the Chhota Rajan gang,” Roy added.

Now Egyptian protesters launch own newspaper

Cairo, February 5:Egyptian activists protesting against the government of President Hosni Mubarak have launched their own newspaper to disseminate information about their ongoing revolt.

“The newspaper is just a single sheet and is called ‘Maidan Tahrir’,” said Raed Jaber, editor of Anbaa Mosku, the Arabic-language version of the Moscow News.

He added that the opposition is also trying to set up a radio station.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters Friday gathered on Tahrir Square demanding Mubarak’s resignation on what they dubbed the “day of departure”.

PPP denies Zardari marriage rumours

Islamabad, February 5: The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Friday rejected rumours that President Asif Ali Zardari has secretly tied the knot in the United States with a Pakistani doctor based in Boston.

Rumours flew on Zardari’s remarriage to Tanveer Zamani, 40, who has declined to comment.

The president’s office has not only rebutted but also condemned the report as baseless propaganda against Zaradri’s personal life, The Nation reported Friday.

Five IAS officers transferred in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, February 5:In a fresh reshuffle, the Uttar Pradesh government today transferred five IAS officials, including a divisional commissioner, an official spokesman said here.

Ajay Chauhan, district magistrate Shahjahanpur, where 19 ITBP aspirants died after falling from a moving train on Tuesday last, has been shifted to Agra in the same capacity.

He will be replaced by special secretary medical education department Navdeep Rinwa.

Obama urges Mubarak to make ‘right decision’

Washington, February 5:US President Barack Obama Friday appealed to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to listen to his people and make the “right decision” about the best way forward for the country.

Obama would not say whether Mubarak should resign before his September timeframe for leaving office, but made it clear that “going back to the old ways is not going to work”.

US expects Egypt to honour peace with Israel

Washington, February 5:The US expects the Egyptian government to honour previous peace agreements with Israel regardless of who is in power, the White House said Friday.

“Our expectation would be that whatever the next government of Egypt is, that they would adhere to a treaty signed by the government of Egypt,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Gibbs was referring to the 1978 Camp David Accords, which were brokered by the US and formed the basis of a 1979 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.

SSC to recruit 53,200 para-military constables

Mumbai, February 4:The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will recruit 53,200 constables for central para-military forces through a common recruitment examination, SSC Chairman N K Raghupathy said here today.

This is the first time that government has decided to conduct a common recruitment examination for recruitment of Constable (General Duty) in all central para-military organizations through Staff Selection Commission. Earlier, the respective CPOs used to make recruitment of constables (GD) on their own.

Pakistan cabinet set to be dissolved

Islamabad, February 4:The central executive committee (CEC) of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party Friday decided to dissolve the federal cabinet and empower Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to do the job, a media report said.

In the CEC meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the PPP, the cabinet members handed over their resignations to the party high command, Geo TV reported.

The party authorised Gilani to dissolve the cabinet whenever needed, it said.

Managing inflationary risk biggest challenge: Rangarajan

Coimbatore, February 4:Admitting that inflation triggered by foodgrain price rise did not moderate as expected by the government, C Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, today said managing inflationary risk was the biggest challenge in the short run.

Inflation was triggered by the increase in foodgrain prices and the government expected that it would moderate in 2011 but this did not happen, he said here.

Haryana sets up police stations to check power, water theft

Chandigarh, February 4:In a unique move, the Haryana government Friday announced the setting up of police stations to check the theft of power and canal water in the state.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda approved the proposal of setting up of eight special police stations to check the theft of power and canal water in the state, Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said here.

Yadav said the chief minister had sanctioned posts of 356 police personnel, including officers, to meet the need of staff of special police stations. The force will be headed by a superintendent of police.
