Rodents nibble on corpses at government hospital

Hyderabad, January 28: Exposing the sorry state of affairs in government hospitals, rodents partially ate three dead bodies in the Mahaboobnagar government hospital morgue, leading to protests by the relatives of the deceased.

According to reports reaching here, the bodies were kept in the mortuary after post-mortem yesterday and when the kin of the deceased went to collect the bodies today, they found the bodies partially eaten. The bodies of two children who drowned in a pond at Bhootpur were among the three corpses.

All government bodies come under Lok Ayukta

Hyderabad, January 28: “Except the chief minister, every government institution including ministers come under the purview of Lok Ayukta,” said justice S Ananda Reddy, Lok Ayukta of AP. He hoisted the national flag on the occasion of Republic Day here today.

Four arrested, CMS suspended in Firozabad rape case

Lucknow, January 28:Two police officials and the two accused were today arrested while the Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of the district hospital was suspended in connection with the self-immolation attempt by a backward caste girl in Firozabad after being raped, official sources here said.

Ganga Sharan, SHO Nagla Khangar police station, and sub inspector Siyaram were arrested after an FIR was lodged against them for not performing their duties effectively and destroying evidence, the sources said.

The two were earlier placed under suspension.

Andhra seeks help for students stuck in US

Hyderabad, January 28:With many students from Andhra Pradesh facing the possibility of being deported from the United States following the closure of Tri-Valley University, the state government Friday urged the Indian government to take up the issue with the US authorities.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has requested the ministry of external affairs to pursue the matter with the US government for giving all possible assistance to the students affected by the closure of the SanFrancisco-based university.

“The changing of players auction order as pointed by some franchisees is an issue which I highlighted when I saw the rules changed last minute. The order changing – should not have been allowed – as it gives advantage to teams that knew of it before,” Modi wrote on social networking site Twitter.

Bangalore, January 28:Four drug peddlers were arrested and brown sugar worth Rs one crore in the international market recovered from their possession, police said today.

The four were arrested yesterday and 875 grams of brown sugar worth Rs one crore, some cash and four mobile phones were recovered from them, a police release said.

Five dead, 13 injured in Ahmedabad building collapse

Ahmedabad, January 28:Five people, including a woman, were killed and 13 others injured when a five-storey newly-constructed building collapsed here Friday morning, leading to the partial collapse of two adjoining buildings as well, officials said.

While six people have been admitted for treatment of fractures, seven others are being treated in the outpatient department.

Alonso and Massa unveil new Ferrari for 2011 season

Ishrat Jehan encounter was fake: SIT member

New Delhi, January : Member of the special investigation team investigating the Ishrat Jehan encounter case on Friday said that the encounter was fake.

Ahmedabad Joint Commissioner of Police Satish Verma has claimed that as many as 14 police officers, including seven IPS officers are suspects.

He has said this in an affidavit filed in the Gujarat high court.

13 Govt. school students fell sick after eating mid-day meals

Hyderabad, January 28: Thirteen students of a government school fell sick after having mid-day meal at the school at Brahmanapalli village in the mandal on Thursday. The students were rushed to government hospital in Godavarikhani by 108 ambulance. All of them are said to be out of danger.

‘US embassy official Blackwater agent’

Islamabad, January 28: Pakistani media say the US embassy official charged with the murder of two Pakistani citizens is an agent for the notorious security firm, Blackwater.

The US official identified by police as Raymond Davis shot dead two men riding on a motorcycle in Lahore on Thursday in what he claimed was self-defense during an attempt robbery.

A third Pakistani was run over and killed in the incident after being hit by a US consulate vehicle rushing to the scene to the American’s aid.

Man kept wife in cellar for 16 years, lived with another woman

London, January 28: A man in Brazil locked up his wife in a cellar for 16 long years as he lived upstairs with another woman, it was reported here.

Joao Batista Groppo has been arrested on suspicion of keeping his wife locked in the squalid cellar for 16 years, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

Sixtyfour-year-old Sebastiana Aparecida Groppo was found by the police in the cellar of the house in the city of Sorocaba in Sao Paulo state Wednesday.

The woman was living in pitiable conditions as the fhe floor of the cellar was littered with faeces and dead cockroaches.

BCCI asks ICC to reconsider decision on Eden

New Delhi, January 28: The Indian cricket board on Friday asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider its decision of taking away the India-England World Cup match from the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata.

“We have written a letter to the ICC to reconsider its decision. Now it is up to the ICC to decide, but we are confident that the stadium can host the crucial India-England match,” Ratnakar Shetty, tournament director and chief administrative officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said.

Disappointed that match shifted out of Eden: English players

London, January 28: Fans in Kolkata are not the only ones left heartbroken by the ICC’s decision to shift the World Cup match between India and England out of Eden Gardens, the English cricketers are also disappointed that they would not be playing at the historic venue.

The ICC on Thursday decided to shift the match out of Eden Gardens after the stadium failed to meet the completion deadline for renovation work.

The iconic 100,000-capacity venue will not host the February 27 match due to concerns about “cricket operations, media, broadcast and sponsorship facilities”.

Fishermen deaths: Krishna directs foreign secy to visit Colombo

New Delhi, January 28: Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will travel to Colombo on Saturday to discuss with the Sri Lankan government the killing of Indian fishermen in the past one month allegedly by its navy.

“External affairs minister S M Krishna has asked the foreign secretary to go to Sri Lanka tomorrow to discuss the killing of Indian fishermen with the government there,” sources said here on Friday.

Arabs more threatened than Jews after watching violent clips

London, January 28: A study revealed that the level of threat the Arabs feel after watching a violent clip was significantly higher than for the Jewish participants.

The study was conducted by Moshe Zeidner with counterpart Hasida Ben-Zur and Shlomit Reshef of the University of Haifa, Israel.

They set out to examine whether exposure to TV reportage of terror events or political violence could pose some form of “indirect threat” to the viewer, according to a Haifa statement.
